The characters were easily the strongest point in this novel. The plot was also good, albeit a bit predictable at times. However, this book was written when Madalena was fifteen years-old, and it shows. Even if she demonstrated, even at that age, a good ability to weave a plot and develop characters and settings, her writing betrays her young age. It gets better as the story progresses, which makes me think the other books in the series will probably be better, though.

Still, it made getting into the story a bit difficult, at first.

This is still a great book and I enjoyed reading it. I recommend it to people who are usually afraid of reading Portuguese books from young authors.

The geopolitical context is also very interesting, created from scratch, middle-age like, where nobles fight for power and catapults are state of the art. A striking difference with our middle-age is that women's rights in some of the Powers are already somewhat understood and respected. My main issue with the book was the writing. By the end of the book this is fairly less notorious and does leave me interested in her later books.

I don't exactly agree with the fact that everyone classifies this as Fantasy, since there aren't any elements usually associated with it - it's more like Historical Fiction, set in a different world.

This was a good read, and the only reason it took me so long to finish it was the size of the book, which made it an impossible task to take it with me outside I barely have time to read at home. There was a lot of character development, a well thought-out plot and a story that was tied up in the best possible way.

I liked the book but I thought it was missing something, I just thought the love story was too fast and badly told, but the actual story of her bravery and how mature she was for her age, and the mistery behind her birth, was amazing! Nov 07, Sofia Silva added it.
