New Orleans Memories
I immediately headed to Bourbon Street , and life was good. Louisiana , like New York , was an eighteen year old drinking state, the only two in the Union, and I was legal. Met a local girl, who was as lonely and lost as I was, and was happy to show me around.

She knew of a bar down on Decatur, Bonaparte's Retreat, that had a great band. We walked over, and went in. The band was great. She agreed to meet me the next night, and surprisingly she did. One of those nights, I got hammered at Bonaparte's Retreat. The worst I've ever been. One of those nights where you say "Never again," Thanks to that girl I got safely back to the rooming house, and my love affair with New Orleans began. A couple of days after that, we said our goodbyes, never to hear from each other again.
Thanks to that week together, I think we both saw things differently and more clearly, and set our life courses accordingly. And every trip back to New Orleans, I will walk past what was Bonaparte's Retreat on Decatur, and remember another time; a time of growth, maturing, and of understanding of what love really is. I'm supposed to be wrapping a bunch of Christmas presents and all I can do is trying and pick one memory from thousands!!! My favorite memory is actually my favorite time of year in south Louisiana I have spent the past 30 years on the "Avenue" jumping and screaming for beads and trinkets and enjoying visiting with family and friends both from Baton Rouge and New Orleans.

There is nothing else like it when everyone is enjoying themselves while visiting with strangers from around the world who are experiencing Mardi Gras for the very first time and teaching them "parade etiquette"!! I was born in Nawlins, near the French Quarter. We moved to the burbs by the time I went to school, then moved to Texas when I was about The rest of our family stayed We had to relocate my mother when her house flooded back in This past Christmas my husband and I arranged a trip for my dear mama to experience the city she loves, as a tourist for the first time.
AND it was the first time my 20 yr old daughter had ever been to the French Quarter we always stayed with family when we visit. So, being with the pair of them brought tears to our eyes.
It was such a moving experience for us all. We did it all We arranged for one to pick us up in front of our hotel and we paid for an hour. It was expensive, but the weather could not have been better and we learned so much from our excellent driver. Aside from the delicious food, we also enjoyed renting a car and letting my mama take us to all the places she remembered growing up; the schools she attended all catholic , the places she lived, where she worked, etc.
December is a good month to visit the city. The only thing we didn't do that I wish we had was to drive through City Park to see all the lights. Aaaaaaaaaah, all of these stories are so great!! I only have 2 trips to draw upon working on the 3rd , but I guess it would be my 1st night in NO. I'm going to wake up and realize it's a dream and boy am I going to be depressed.
Everybody's 1st look at Bourbon should be at night! I walked up and down Bourbon with a huge grin and big eyes looking at everything. I never even went into a bar or club. I just walked up towards Canal and turned back around, stopping and looking in and gawking at everything. I just could not believe Mardi Gras when I saw it for the first time. I was with my best friend she still is and we had planned to come home Sunday, but simply had to stay for Fat Tuesday.
We carried 4 large brown grocery sacks of beads back on a Trailways bus. Our legs and arms were covered with bruises where we fought for beads, and we lied to our instructors about our absence from class.

That was when I fell in love with New Orleans. Fast forward to my brother turned 50 on April 12 that year, and he and I and another of my best friends came down for FQF. He had just been diagnosed with liver cancer, and he died 11 months later. The following year 2 of us returned and after more than a few drinks, I had a meltdown in Jackson Square where he bought that painting the year before.
Nevertheless, these are some of Morton's best recorded solos, and his playing fully justifies 4 stars. I purchased this disc long before Amazon. Even though it is short playing by current standards, it is still Jelly Roll Morton, performing as only he could. This is a classic, historic document and a must have for any serious music historian, scholar, or audiophile.
After all, Jelly Roll invented Jazz, right? Pages with related products. See and discover other items: There's a problem loading this menu right now. Learn more about Amazon Prime. Get fast, free shipping with Amazon Prime. Get to Know Us. English Choose a language for shopping.
