I would like to stress that shools and Common Core standards are putting too much attention on the assessments and testing and not enough individual learning on the subjects themselves. I understand that testing shows us where kids are at so we can adjust what needs to be worked on, but focusing solely on testing is causing kids to fail! I would like to add asking kids to share their successes. If you ask them to tell a story about something they are proud of , they practice communication skills and the teacher learns about the students interests.
This creates a ore equal relationship where they feel confident that they have something to offer. I want to praise this really smart comment: If it's messy, no amount of student-centred, non-didactic learning methods will help develop their critical thinking skills. We need to be very wary of putting down those year old, out-of-date methods….
The ability of a student to read and write clearly will demonstrate, to some extent, their thinking processes. We need to be very wary of putting down those year old, out-of-date methods. The proportion of people who can't do the basics from that era, is much smaller that today's.
Emotional safety is at the crux of what we should continually be focusing on. By creating positive learning environments, we enable students to truly "let loose and learn. The 4-Cs have always been important.
A Forum for Reflecting on Practice
The key, I believe, is embedding the development of 21st century skills within an educational environment that takes advantage of students' natural inclination to learn. While we explore new ways to foster the 4-Cs, we need to also consider modifications to the current educational paradigm.
