I have never before written a book review and hope I can do justice here to Michael Sawaya's new book, "Turbulance in the River.

I was instantly struck by his calm yet intense presence. It was clear that he had special qualities that you only see occasionally -- a glow and inner countenance that certain spiritual teachers have. In fact, I found myself opening up to him as if we were old friends, and let him in on a tremendous struggle I had been involved with professionally.

I instantly felt a great deal of acceptance from him, along with his feedback to me that came from a place of identification and wisdom. So when I was recently searching for a spiritual book to read on Amazon I tear through these kinds of books and am always looking for something new , I was quite surprised that this very well-known local attorney from his TV ads had written such a book. I liked the idea that someone who has accomplished at the highest level with no hidden desire to get rich quick from the release of a book would take the time to share his knowledge of the spiritual.

But I must admit that I was a bit surprised to find that the book involved Michael communicating with a spirit by the name of Aatnan who revealed to him through many conversations over time the Four Lessons and Two Truths. But I admit that I had been rightly impressed by Neil Donald Walsh's Conversations with God series, which used a similar approach of "channeling" the wisdom of a Great Spirit. So with a touch of skepticism I decided to see what Michael Sawaya had to offer in his book, Turbulence in the River.

I am an avid reader and read for an hour every morning. Over the years I have read many of the familiar titles in the area of "spiritual books. So the area where spirituality meets psychology has always been of great interest to me. I have an issue with so many modern authors who demonize the ego, and attribute all of life's problems to it.

Turbulent river

I much prefer Michael's take on the human mind, and "Thought," and am reminded of Hillman's "noble ego" concept. With that said, I feel strongly that Michael Sawaya has written an epic book that has the power to change many lives and will likely outlast many other books in the spiritual realm.

His writings spoke to me in a way that is quite uncommon in my experience, and was exquisitely personal to me. I then found myself comparing so many of my favorite books somewhat unfavorably to Michael's book, in that they now felt a bit dry and antiseptic. On the other hand, my perception is that Turbulance in the River is an inspired description of "How Life Works," and is infused with a poeticism and a humanity that is so rare in books of this kind.

The poetry of the words in the book in a way harkens back to Kalil Gibran and the beauty of the language of the Sufi teachers. The book is at once reverent and solemn, but also quite joyous and inspiring.

I was particularly struck by how different it is from so many other guides to life and spirituality. This book is a living, breathing, loving document that is clearly inspired and infused with universal wisdom and truths. Glad to have read this book, timing is everything. As a developing business person who reads a lot of business books, I haven't quite read anything about spiritual development.

I believe this book came at the right time. Sawaya for the book reference, I enjoyed the lessons for the River of Now. Turbulence in the River has changed the way I see the world, and how I see myself fit in it. First of all, I didn't find this book- this book found me. A friend lent me their copy insisting that I read it and I read through it over a weekend.

I not only couldn't put it down, I couldn't stop thinking about it when I finally did put it down! Turbulence in the River is written by a well known attorney in Colorado. I knew Michael Sawaya as a television-celebrity-figure already, and I was skeptical that someone like that could write a moving spiritual book. But now looking back I can't believe I saw it that way at all Michael Sawaya encapsulates a compassionate and caring individual, and really conveys a method to achieve purpose and happiness that works for me. The methods explained in this book are not simple explanations that anyone can understand right away; nor are they cookie cutter ideas found in so many books today.

That's why I love this book so much. The ideas and methods in this book are deep, complicated, and actually are often contrary to what you may understand already. They challenge your understanding of the universe, but in a way that rebuilds your understanding in a more powerful way than before. Michael Sawaya's messages in this book have transformed the way I see spirituality and the way I relate to this genre. I don't believe this book fits me like a glove, but it definitely has been a powerful stepping stone for me in my spiritual development.

If you are on a path of spiritual understanding this book is a must read. It is so much of a must read that I have literally purchased a book for each one of my close loved ones.

What is Kobo Super Points?

I am not at all afraid to give this book 5 stars. Finding who you are is a good idea. How to do that is always the question. Sometimes it happens with kick in the tush; at other times, when a major event occurs--be it a drama, tragedy or some other wake-up call. Michael Sawaya's thought provoking Turbulence in the River brings along the goose that so many need. Identifying the Truths and Lessons channeled to him through Aatnan, new concepts around Gratitude and Love are revealed.

What makes this a "sit up and and take notice" book is that you would expect this type of book--deep spiritual and personal--to come from one of Colorado's Super Lawyers! Richly presented and visually attractive, this is a book that you want to savor over. Sawaya taps into profound mysticism in the form of a Spirit Guide teaching us to connect the spirit world with our own psychology as we journey through the universes.

This is an articulate treatise on human life in relation to our Creator.
