The Book of Numbers - In the Wilderness

For if she married outside her own tribe, that tribe would lose property to a foreign tribe or nation. This principle had important implications not only in the East but in Medieval Europe as well. THE BOOK OF NUMBERS

These shall first set forth. And they shall set forth in the second rank. And they shall go forward in the third rank. They shall go hindmost with their standards.

I am the LORD. These are the families of the Levites according to the house of their fathers. These things are the burden of the sons of Kohath in the tabernacle of the congregation. Aaron and his sons shall go in, and appoint them every one to his service and to his burden: And the woman shall say, Amen, amen. This was the dedication of the altar, after that it was anointed. Sprinkle water of purifying upon them, and let them shave all their flesh, and let them wash their clothes, and so make themselves clean. Thus shalt thou do unto the Levites touching their charge.

And the LORD heard it. And they three came out. If there be a prophet among you, I the LORD will make myself known unto him in a vision, and will speak unto him in a dream. He was called by the Lord to lead the children of Israel out of bondage in Egypt, through the wilderness, and to the promised land of Canaan. Moses witnessed most of the events recorded in the book of Numbers.

He may have relied on other witnesses, written sources, or revelation for information concerning events he did not see, such as the interactions between Baalam and Balak see Numbers 22— There are varying opinions regarding when Numbers and the other books of Moses were written, and we do not know exactly where Moses was when he wrote this book.

However, the text provides information concerning the settings of events recorded in the book. For example, Numbers 1: Finally, Numbers 22—36 relates events that occurred on the plains of Moab on the eastern border of Canaan as Israel prepared to enter the promised land. The book of Numbers provides census information that helps us understand the size of the population of Israel at the beginning and near the end of their wanderings in the wilderness. It also outlines the organization of the camp of Israel, discusses the responsibilities of the Levites, and explains the purposes and conditions of the Nazarite vow.

Preparations are then made for resuming the march to the Promised Land. Various ordinances and laws are decreed. The Israelites set out from Sinai. The people murmur against God and are punished by fire; Moses complains of their stubbornness and is ordered to choose seventy elders to assist him in the government of the people. Miriam and Aaron insult Moses at Hazeroth, which angers God; Miriam is punished with leprosy and is shut out of camp for seven days, at the end of which the Israelites proceed to the desert of Paran on the border of Canaan.

Twelve spies are sent out into Canaan and come back to report to Moses.

Joshua and Caleb , two of the spies, report that the land is abundant and is "flowing with milk and honey", but the other spies say that it is inhabited by giants, and the Israelites refuse to enter the land. Yahweh decrees that the Israelites will be punished for their loss of faith by having to wander in the wilderness for 40 years. Moses is ordered by God to make plates to cover the altar. The children of Israel murmur against Moses and Aaron on account of the destruction of Korah 's men and are stricken with the plague, with 14, perishing.

Aaron and his family are declared by God to be responsible for any iniquity committed in connection with the sanctuary. The Levites are again appointed to help in the keeping of the Tabernacle. The Levites are ordered to surrender to the priests a part of the tithes taken to them. The Israelites blame Moses for the lack of water.

Numbers 1– Wilderness Wanderings, Part 1

Moses is ordered by God to speak to a rock but initially disobeys, and is punished by the announcement that he shall not enter Canaan. The king of Edom refuses permission to pass through his land and they go around it.

Aaron dies on Mount Hor. The Israelites are bitten by Fiery flying serpents for speaking against God and Moses. A brazen serpent is made to ward off these serpents. The Israelites arrive on the plains of Moab. A new census gives the total number of males from twenty years and upward as ,, and the number of the Levites from the age of one month and upward as 23, The land shall be divided by lot.

The daughters of Zelophehad , their father having no sons, are to share in the allotment.
