One of Nicholson's best movies yet to date I think. It can truly touch you personally like many of his movies can.

Once Jack Nicholson's legacy is complete, this movie should be around the top of his career, but since so many of his movies are great, it's hard to say exactly how far to top it will be. A must for all Nicholson fans.

Jack delivers here as he does in many of the roles he portrays. Buy it and see for yourself. Jack Nicholson gives his best performance since "One Flew Over the Cuckoos's Nest" as a depressed, revenge driven father and Daid Morse holds his own as guilt ridden man who accidetally killed Nicholson's daughter 6 years ago.

There's a few scenes that make the movie worth watching, but I wouldn't ever say this a must see film. In fact, if you're going to skip any of Sean Penn's directorial outings, make it this one.

Overall, I was disappointed with this film as a whole. It could have and should have been so much better. The story was slow moving. The performances were average and iddn? Good story idea but could probably have been executed better. Just fine drama of a jeweler is shredded by grief after his young daughter is killed by a drunk driver. He resolutely tells his estranged wife that he plans to shoot the culprit now that he has been released from prison.

It's an unpleasant but riveting story about strained moral responsibility, the licking of emotional wounds, the contradictions of masculinity, and the tragic cracks into which whole families can tumble. Sean Penn wrote and directed this tale of loss, guilt, and revenge. The death of their child took a heavy toll on the Gales; their marriage broke up, and, while Mary has remarried and attempted to put her life back together, Freddy has become an embittered alcoholic, seething with directionless rage and searching for a purpose in life. Freddy intends to kill Booth as soon as he's released from prison, as he believes that jail was not a severe enough punishment for his daughter's death.

But Freddy discovers that Booth is still wracked with guilt for his crime and can barely live with himself. He tells Booth that he has three days left to live; Booth tries to find solace in the arms of artist Jojo Robin Wright , while Freddy continues to wallow in alcohol and self-pity at a strip club. The Crossing Guard also features an original song by Bruce Springsteen; Penn's previous directorial outing, The Indian Runner, was loosely based on a Springsteen song from his album Nebraska.

He breaks into a home and hides in a little girl's room. The girl guides the police away, and Freddy thanks her and leaves. Freddy arrives at John's trailer and waits before he enters.

John abruptly jumps from a corner with a rifle in hand. Freddy tells him since he is on the run, on his property, and armed, John should be able to get away with killing him. There is a standoff as they point guns at each other. John however drops his gun and runs away; Freddy follows him. After a lengthy chase across the city, Freddy catches John climbing a fence and fires at him.

John is only superficially wounded, however, and continues running. Freddy follows him, until he realizes that John has led him to a graveyard where Emily is buried. John talks silently to the grave and finally says "Your daddy's coming".
