In the packaged goods field — with the exception of EPs — some believe the position is economically worse for the record manufacturer, because in addition to the excessive album fig- ure being released regularly, many leading retailers have developed the practice of importing supplies of al- bums that are not manufactured un- der license in this country.

Here again the situation is coming to the stage where it is increasingly difficult for promotion and sales personnel to en- joy the maximum results from LPs because of the limited time they have to concentrate on their individual albums. Most major companies in Australia make releases on the average of every fortnight and in certain cases these releases are of a size comparable to say a monthly issue by some impor- tant American labels.

In view of the huge overall costs in producing packaged lines, many state that an unhealthy economy can grow within the industry unless record com- panies are able to gain saturation sales results from each album re- leased. It is common gossip in this country that the smaller record companies working on a limited LP catalogue and financial backing often gain far greater unit sales volume with each individual album than do the powerful majors with all their resources.

This is not the case of course with original- cast and soundtrack albums. In order to popularize records as an entertain- ment medium with the majority of people, there is much talk that record manufacturers should give serious consideration to a drop in prices and thereby bring retail prices — especially for albums — within the reach of more people, particularly those in the lower income brackets.

With the price structure for albums as it now stands, many believe that the present setup from manufacturer to distributor to dealer allows each party involved a profit percentage margin in excess of the true and realistic value of the product they are handling. Whilst John Citizen here is in a fairly secure financial position, he is involved in a certain amount of time- payment commitments for TV, autos and loads of other things that take care of his income for many, many months.
