Dedicated to the animals in the southern hemisphere, this large, beautiful hardback takes us on a journey from tropical regions to the Antarctic, learning about the many wonderful animals that make the southern half of the world their home. Covering animals in 5 regions: South America, Africa, Asia, Australia and Antarctica, most of the spectacular animal illustrations encompass a double page spread, showcasing Dieter Braun's stunning artwork. The information about each animal is concise but interesting, meaning that this book can be enjoyed by a wide variety of children who won't be put off by a text-heavy fact book.
Non-fiction books about nature are great for older children, from engaging reluctant readers to inspiring budding environmentalists. This field is required. Highest Mountain Deepest Ocean: A Pictorial Compendium of Natural Wonders.
Did you know that the Blue Whale's tongue weighs as much as an elephant, and its heart as much as a small car? Or that the Hercules Beetle can grow to 19cm long? Artistically, Wild Animals of the North is, indeed, absolute perfection, presenting eighty realistically but also imaginatively and painterly illustrated animals in three chapters animals of North America, animals of Europe and anima Originally published in German as Die Welt der wilden Tiere: Artistically, Wild Animals of the North is, indeed, absolute perfection, presenting eighty realistically but also imaginatively and painterly illustrated animals in three chapters animals of North America, animals of Europe and animals of Asia.
Now some of the animals, the creatures featured in the specific sections are, of course, endemic to multiple continents, which fact should really have been both pointed out and explained, as it might, for example, prove confusing for children to see the moose listed as a European animal when it is also native to North America, just as the wolverine is endemic to both North America and Northern Asia. While the illustrations are definitely worth five stars and more , with beautiful shapes, both geometric and rounded, muted but still expressively bold colours, the same unfortunately cannot, in my opinion, be said with regard to the accompanying text.
Although what narrative there is, is readable, descriptive and informative and I especially appreciate that for each of the animals, its scientific classification, its Latin name, is also offered , I really do NOT understand why only about half of the depicted animals have actually been supplied with descriptive text.
Wild Animals of the South
The remaining animals are illustrated, with their Latin classification featured, but no narrative descriptions, no additional information is given which really does limit the teaching and learning potential of Wild Animals of the North , as does the fact that there are no suggestions for further reading, no lists of interesting websites, even the conservation statuses of the featured animals are not always included, and considering that a number of them are considered critically endangered, that is a serious academic shortcoming. Still highly recommended, with the additional caveat that Wild Animals of the North is rather expensive, if not even a bit overpriced.
Jun 26, Kaitlin rated it it was amazing Shelves: I would recommend this to any, and everyone. This is, quite simply, stunning. It's a non-fiction illustrated book which focuses on various animals from the Northern regions of Earth. A lot of the animal images are accompanied by some information about the daily habits of that animal.

I found that whilst I did know some of what was mentioned, a lot was still super interesting and the paragraphs are short, sweet and informative. Most of the animals are illustrated in multiple poses using a very geometric set of forms and shapes, and this gives such a beautiful image every time, that I couldn't help but pour over each one multiple times in wonder. The way that Dieter Braun chooses to pose the animals, to show them on a backdrop native to their habitat, or to show them as they move is incredible.
Although the style Braun uses is not 'accurate' in terms of reality, it's SO accurate in terms of form, shape and movement. Every animal is depicted beautifully and every one has it's own true identity. Not one page of this book let me down, every single one was captivating and worthy of being a print all on its own!!!
Honestly I am amazed by the beauty of the colours, the softness of the images, and the way that Braun makes this style work for every one. All of them were exceptionally well-designed, coloured and posed, and I have nothing but utter praise for this book. Truly I am so excited that there will be another book Wild Animals of the South coming out in future as this is a book I know every child and adult alike would be happy to own.

He owns several and is known for randomly interjecting obscure facts about animals that somehow fit the conversation. This book is unique and a must for any wild animal lover. I scoured the pages to find an explanation of just how the illustrations were made, but there wasn't one.
They are striking and my son pointed out the three dimensional quality. The book includes many unfamiliar animals, one third of which are endangered. Oddly, only some pictures had Books about animals are my son's jam! Oddly, only some pictures had a factual paragraph accompanying them and there seemed to be no rhyme or reason to that. Nonetheless, this was truly stunning and would be a fabulous addition to any child's home library.
Jan 05, Michael rated it it was amazing Shelves: My five-star rating is for the artwork, which is beautiful. The text accompanying most though, annoyingly, not all of the illustrations is factual rather than lyrical, and I'd have preferred the latter. It is, however, a book to be looked at rather than read so, on that basis, I haven't reduced my rating. This was a book I saw in its original German publication and which, despite not speaking German, I was sorely tempted to buy due to it being such a gorgeous artefact I bought instead, Mervyn Peake, Oscar Wilde: Extracts from the Poems of Oscar Wilde , to which I'd happily give ten stars out of five , so when I saw it in its English publication, I had no hesitation in buying it as a gift for a young nephew, and only a slight hesitation before deciding he'd like a different book better and that I'd therefore best keep this one for myself!

It's all about the artwork here, of course, but the simple facts about each species are also engaging enough to interest readers of all ages.
