The story multi layered. The characters so well defined and natural that I have a mental image of each one. The locations are as interesting as the characters, and each setting is clear in my mind as well. This is a book I will re-read, and highly recommend. This historical adventure novel follows the life of a compelling, if flawed, central hero as he lives through the 's gangster era in Chicago and then enters World War II as a special forces commando.

I found it extremely well researched and quite engrossing. It is a novel of fathers good and bad and sons damaged and otherwise. It takes a close look at a cruel world, but ends essentially hopeful. In the universe of the novel, there are predators everywhere and the 'good man' needs to break a lot of society's rules to survive. It is a revenge tale, set in motion in the early chapters.

I Am a Man!

We watch Chris our hero never lose sight, even during the war, of his ultimate goal - settling the score. Like his Dad, a Chicago cop, he is a protector and he makes for a very compelling central character - somebody you care about. This is one of those rare novels that is highly compelling when you're reading it I could not put it down, consumed it quickly, but really didn't want the story to end and also stays with you a long time. I still think about the wonderfully vivid characters, the interesting settings and the exciting plot to this day I also thought at the time it would make a terrific movie, and I keep expecting to see a trailer for it at the cinema.

Let's hope it's as wonderful a movie as it is a piece of writing!
