Fans of suspense novels will find it enthralling on several levels. The secret of success when writing a mystery is to keep the reader captivated from chapter to chapter while weaving a clear path through likely and unlikely circumstances connected by hair-thin threads of reason, coincidence and of course, mystery.

In the usual whodunit the stage is set before the crime usually a murder is committed.

The possible suspects are brought on stage, motives are hinted at and a door is opened for the reader to step through. It will challenge, test and thoroughly entertain any mystery enthusiast straight through to the last punctuation mark. One person found this helpful.

But deeper down the book is probing the nature of guilt, innocence and moral values in the modern world, where we take it for granted that Darwinian materialism is the explanation for everything. This makes for a riveting tale with not one but two surprise endings.

This book is spellbinding. There is no time wasted on elaborate details of buildings or rooms-it's all about people; their personalities, flaws, hidden agendas, and it's up to us to figure out the guilty from the sort of innocent. The author contextualizes Dawkin's theory of the "selfish gene" in an incredibly raw, provocative, and somewhat disturbing story. It is page turner that is both highly entertaining and intellectually stimulating.

The main character, Ritter, although morally and ethically corrupt, engenders sympathy through an understanding of his struggle to reconcile the evidence of his scientific research with the reality of societal norms. The technical writing is exceptional.

The story has many layers and leads you through several unexpected turns. The eclectic collection of characters jump off the page. If you are hoping this will be a good read you're in luck. If you're willing to consider the possibility that The Death Penalty could reasonably be abolished, without harm to our culture, you'll find it here. From the opening scene outside of the Union Correctional Institution to the riveting and suspenseful climax, I couldn't put the book down. The compelling and fascinating characters come to life vividly and visually as this thrilling tale unfolds.
