Everyone hate cockroach" but, this cockroach is a beautiful and kind cockroach named Martina. Lovely story, beautiful drawing, thank you so much. Is this book really a children book? Because it's really has deep philosophy. I received this book from Goodreads Giveaways.

I loved this book! I'm a student learning Spanish, and when it came I was delighted by the chance to practice reading such a charming story. The pictures are great: It is an engaging children's book about a cello-playing cockroach with a penchant for cleaning and her many adventures. Need I say more? One day as Martina is sweeping she finds coin. She uses the coin to go into town, where a beautiful gata cat talks her into buying face powder and a hat.

The gata tells Martina the hat and face powder will help her to look more like a girl and less like a roach. The gata's advice works and Martina soon has many suitors. However, they only like her for her outside be Martina Finds a Shiny Coin is a sweet story about a darling cucarachita cockroach named Martina who longs to find her true love. However, they only like her for her outside beauty and not who she is on the inside. Heartbroken, Martina is ready to give up on love and then a raton rat appears This is such a wonderful story about embracing your true self and never trying to be something you're not to please others.

I love that the main character is a cockroach and of all the critters the only one who sees her true beauty is a rat. The story is fun, creative, and shares a timeless message.

Account Options

The use of Spanish words don't worry there's a glossary is something else I enjoyed as it introduces children to a new language. The author mixes the English and Spanish in such a way that little ones should be able to figure out what the words mean and if not they'll have fun trying. The colorful and engaging illustrations add to the entertainment. It's certainly a story children will want to hear again and again.

I highly recommend picking up a copy. I have been looking forward to reading this book since I registered for a giveaway on Goodreads. I was thrilled to win and as soon as I received the book, my son tore open the envelope and we read the book together. He enjoyed every page, laughed about pigs driving a van and was curious about cellos. I loved the fact that he was exposed to another language in the context of a meaningful story and learned a bit about a culture in another part of the world.

The best compliment I can give this book is from my 2 year old who said "more book" when we were finished. We will be reading it many times.

Oct 22, Alexis rated it it was amazing Shelves: This is a really nice story about being yourself. I particularly liked the inclusion of Spanish words throughout the story. One day, my husband asked me if there were any Puerto Rican folktales I could share with her, and immediately la cucarachita Martina came to mind. I frequently told my daughter the original version, or at least what I remembered of it, that my grandmother recited to me when I was growing up in rural Caguas, Puerto Rico.

Of course, I told her it was, but explained that Martina was very busy and could not have visitors. After telling the story many times, we sat and rewrote it, adding all sorts of ideas that popped into our heads. We made Martina a cellist because my daughter is a cellist. We made her an avid reader, and a dancer, and a singer of bomba y plena. We sent Martina on a journey of self-discovery after she found the shiny coin. The story also sends the message to appreciate all gifts, not just the ones that make you look good.
