That one explosion on a spring morning on April 26, in the Ukrainian town of Chernobyl became a burden for generations of Belarusssians when the harsh southern winds brought radioactive emissions. Belarus was the country most contaminated by the fallout from Chernobyl, and completely uncontaminated areas are still rare. I was born on Aug. Mogilev was at the epicenter of the radiation cloud that blew toward Belarus after the fire at the Ukrainian nuclear power plant in April There was no official explanation: Burned skin, lung problems and deteriorated gums were the results — for the lucky ones.
When my parents found out about the danger, they decided it was best for my mother and brother to move to Moscow. But my father was to stay in Mogilev and continued working.
Breathing was dangerous, but the family needed money. Emigration was not a viable option then. I was born three years later. The clean-up of the material has yet to begin and could take many years to come. Decades later, another 70, are still waiting to evacuate. Some of the contaminants infecting the soil and air, such as plutonium, have a half-life of 24, years.

The contamination of the land remains the biggest health threat as caesium finds its way via the food chain into the human body. Professor Yuri Bandashevsky Prof. PhD in Nuclear Medicine Specialist at the Ivankova Hospital in the Ukraine, states that there should be no caesium in the body or should there be no question of temporary or acceptable levels. The past year has seen great changes in Artems life, from a desolate orphan wandering a war torn country to having a fully functioning new heart and a new, safe, loving home.

She emailed the head office to see what she could do to help, and found herself taking a lead role in fundraising and organising Rest and Recuperation holidays for Belarusian children. After a few years of volunteering, Trina had the opportunity to visit Belarus and see for herself the communities her fundraising and volunteering efforts had helped.

Ninety-nine percent of the land in Belarus has been contaminated to above internationally acceptable levels as a result of the Chernobyl explosion. The contamination will not fade: The original kilometre contaminated exclusion zone has now been expanded to 70 kilometres.
Nadezhda was 19 years old, single, and had just given birth to a seriously disabled girl. And Chernobyl Children International was there to help. Today Lida is 8 years old and lives in one bedroom of a two bedroom flat in Minsk, Belarus. Mother and daughter share quarters with her grandmother, two aunts, and a cousin.
But it seems like nothing is ever easy for us.
