While having each player ask the group a question can help you determine a good gift, there are far simpler and more reliable methods for doing so. If the players don't know each other very well, the game can get a little boring and include some very generic gifts. If each player writes down an interest or hobby on their name card, then you'll have a better chance of getting them something they'll really like.

Read on for another quiz question. It might be a little intimidating to host a secret Santa where the players don't know each other well, but it's not impossible! There are ways to make sure that all the players leave happy. If you're uncertain as to what a person might like, you can always get them something:. Gag gifts might be fine for some people, so read the game's tone--and your gift recipient--to carefully determine if it's appropriate.

There are other types of gifts you can always rely on.

While it may not be the most fun, you can't go wrong with practical gifts! Nice kitchen tools, holiday decorations, and other practical gifts are always a safe bet. While wine usually makes a great housewarming gift, you want to be careful about bringing it to a secret Santa.

If the participants don't know each other well, have them include their age and one of their interests before putting the names into a hat. Before you pick names, discuss a price limit for the gifts that works for everyone.

Then, have each person pull 1 name out of the hat, and set a date for giving gifts. Purchase a gift within the price limit and exchange them on the pre-determined date. Write the names of everyone participating on a piece of paper. In more intimate group environments, only the name of the person is necessary. Cut out and toss the names into a hat. The next step is to prepare the names for a drawing. Cut each name out, and then fold it in half once or twice to prevent people from reading it without unfolding it. Then, place all the folded names into a bowl or hat and mix them around a bit so that the names are shuffled. Set a price limit. This can be done in discussion with the whole group or just by those who are organizing the event. Work around the group, giving everyone the opportunity to draw a single name randomly out of the hat.

Keep the names folded and hidden until everyone has drawn. Ideally, the provider of each gift should not be disclosed when setting up the game. Players take turns, and can either open a new gift, or steal a previously opened gift. This game is more commonly known as the white elephant gift exchange , or Yankee Swap.

Each participant brings a gift for their assigned person, with a letter. This letter may or may not have hints on who the giver might be, depending on the rules participants have established. Each receiver must guess who made the gift. In this version, each person buys a gift for specific amount, not for anyone specifically. Each person also puts in a specific amount of money into a pot.

Who goes first in gift selection can be determined by random selection. At the end, the gifts that were chosen are opened and the winner of the money and leftover gifts are drawn. In this version, participants engage in a "conspiracy" where all participants work together to select a gift for a single participant without that participant's direct involvement or knowledge.
