I had my own bed but the catch was it was right next to his bed as if to make one big bed. I said I would feel more comfortable sleeping on the couch, which I ended up doing. The next day I decided to chill at the jetty attached to the country property and admire the archipelago of islands. My host came to meet me and said he had to get something out of storage which was near the jetty.

So I walked with him to the shed, he went in for a few moments and came back out with a gun in tow. He told me it was a hunting gun and he had to put it back in his safety box in the house as his relatives had used it a few weeks back while hunting, which is favourite Swedish pastime.

I guess being from Australia where a gun is a very rare sight, I was stunned and shell-shocked. I mentioned that it looked bad and that I was fearful for my life. He apologised for the brief scare it caused.

We chatted about the hunting culture in Sweden while we walked back to the cabin with the gun in tow. The gun was put back in its safety box, locked away and was never spoken about again. I left the next day. I again tried my hand with Couchsurfing in Helsinki with a local Finnish student my age. I saw Helsinki through his eyes which was beneficial as despite the fact Helsinki is a small city, it seems to be a place where you really need local knowledge on where to go and what to do.

My fifth experience with Couchsurfing was also great. I stayed with a local Polish student in Warsaw and they were ever so accommodating, showing me around the city and cooking me a local delicacy. They even gave up their bed for me which I did not expect! Despite the two unfortunate incidents that I endured, the world brings out the best of people and I have since Couchsurfed many times with great success and with friendships been born from it.

Granted that those were rare events, I highly suggest you carefully read reviews before you agree to take part and be extra cautious.
