I found that to be immensely helpful, as I am not a trained teacher, and if you have ever tried to have a discussion about literature with a monosyllabic teen, you know how hard it is to determine whether they "get it" or not. This gave him great writing exercises that led naturally to an easier time in writing the final book report.

I highly recommend this guide to anyone who wants to master this great American novel. I have even taken to recommending this book to my students. I know bad teacher.

However, using this text breakdown and summary along with side by side texts my students have improved their short and long term understanding of literature by remarkable amounts.
