The Last Vigilante (The Last Replacement Trilogy Book 2)

When he refuses to throw a fight because his son is in the audience, he is killed by one of the Fixer's men. Having promised his father not to use physical force to deal with things, Matt gets around that promise by adopting a new identity who can use physical force. Adorned in a yellow and black costume made from his father's boxing robes and using his superhuman abilities, Matt confronts the killers as the superhero Daredevil, unintentionally causing the Fixer to have a fatal heart attack. Wally Wood introduced Daredevil's modern red costume in issue 7 [9] [10] in which Daredevil's battle against the far physically-superior Sub-Mariner has become one of the most iconic stories of the series.

Daredevil would embark on a series of adventures involving such villains as the Owl , Stilt-Man , the Gladiator , and the Enforcers. In issue 16 May , he meets Spider-Man , a character who would later be one of his greatest hero friends. The series' issue run by writer-editor Stan Lee and penciler Gene Colan beginning with issue 20 includes Daredevil 47, in which Murdock defends a blind Vietnam veteran against a frameup ; Lee has cited it as one of his favorite stories of his career.

Matt reveals his secret identity to his girlfriend Karen Page in issue 57, [19] although she leaves the series after the revelation proves too much for her. Gerry Conway took over as writer with issue 72, and turned the series in a pulp science fiction direction: He also moved Daredevil to San Francisco beginning with Daredevil 86, and simultaneously brought on the Black Widow as co-star.

Jann Wenner , the co-founder and publisher of the Rolling Stone music magazine appeared in Daredevil June by Gerber and Colan. The writing and editing jobs went to Marv Wolfman with issue , which wrote the Black Widow out of the series and returned Daredevil to Hell's Kitchen. Wolfman's issue run included the introduction of one of Daredevil's most popular villains, Bullseye , [24] and a story arc in which the Jester uses computer-generated images to hoodwink the mass media.

With issue , Jim Shooter became the writer and introduced Paladin in issue Jan. McKenzie's work on Daredevil reflected his background in horror comics, and the stories and even the character himself took on a much darker tone: Daredevil battled a personification of death, [27] one of his archenemies was bifurcated by a tombstone, [28] and a re-envisioning of Daredevil's origin showed him using stalker tactics to drive the Fixer to his fatal heart attack.

In a story arc overlapping Wolfman, Shooter, and McKenzie's runs on the series, Daredevil reveals his identity to Glenn and becomes partially responsible for the suicide of her father; their relationship would persist, but would prove increasingly harmful to both of them. Though the Black Widow returned for a dozen issues — and attempted to rekindle her romance with Daredevil, he ultimately rejects her in favor of Glenn.

Miller continued the title in a similar vein to McKenzie. Resuming the drastic metamorphosis the previous writer had begun, Miller took the step of essentially ignoring all of Daredevil's continuity prior to his run on the series; on the occasions where older villains and supporting cast were used, their characterizations and history with Daredevil were reworked or overwritten.

Most prominently, dedicated and loving father Jack Murdock was reimagined as a drunkard who physically abused his son Matt, entirely revising Daredevil's reasons for becoming a lawyer. Daredevil himself was gradually developed into an antihero. In issue April , he attempts to murder Bullseye by throwing him off a tall building; when the villain survives as a quadriplegic , he breaks into his hospital room and tries to scare him to death by playing a two-man variation on Russian roulette with a secretly unloaded gun. Following up a suggestion from O'Neill that he give Daredevil a realistic fighting style, [34] Miller introduced ninjas into the Daredevil canon, bringing a martial-arts aspect to Daredevil's fighting skills, and introducing previously-unseen characters who had played a major part in his youth: Stick , leader of the ninja clan the Chaste , who had been Murdock's sensei after he was blinded; [35] a rival clan called the Hand ; [36] and Elektra , an ex-girlfriend turned lethal ninja assassin.

Elektra was killed fighting Bullseye in issue April After Miller left the series entirely. O'Neil switched from editor to writer. Miller returned as the title's regular writer, co-writing with O'Neil. Miller and artist David Mazzucchelli crafted the acclaimed " Daredevil: Born Again " storyline in — The Kingpin acquires the information and, in an act of revenge, orchestrates a frameup which costs Murdock his attorney's license.

Miller ended the arc on a positive note, with Murdock reuniting with both Karen Page and Maggie , the mother he thought dead, now a nun. Ann Nocenti later became the series's longest-running regular writer, with a four-and-a-quarter-year run from — Jan. The team returned Murdock to law by co-founding with Page a nonprofit drug and legal clinic, while Nocenti crafted stories confronting feminism , drug abuse , nuclear proliferation , and animal rights -inspired terrorism.

She introduced the antagonist Typhoid Mary , [40] and in issues — used the Inferno event as a backdrop for the collapse of Daredevil's life: Murdock subsequently becomes a drifter in upstate New York , an especially controversial move in Nocenti's run, as it marked the first time the character had been taken outside of an urban environment. She ended her run with a positive turn in Murdock's fortunes: Chichester continued from where Nocenti left off, with Murdock resuming his friendship with Foggy Nelson , struggling to re-win the heart of Karen Page, appealing the revocation of his attorney's license, and bonding more deeply than ever with Hell's Kitchen.

Chichester's focus on Daredevil's relationship with New York City went so far as to have two issues devoted entirely to Daredevil defending New Yorkers from ordinary criminals and even simple accidents. The critically acclaimed "Last Rites" arc from — saw Daredevil regaining his attorney's license and finally bringing the Kingpin to justice.

Frank Miller returned to the character and his origins with the five-issue Daredevil: The Man Without Fear miniseries. An injured Daredevil creates a more protective costume from biomimetic materials: Revamped billy clubs could attach to form nunchucks or a bo staff. His secret identity becomes public knowledge, leading to him faking his own death and assuming the new identity of "Jack Batlin". This new identity and costume lasts for several story arcs, while Murdock finds a way to convince the world that he is not, in fact, secretly Daredevil courtesy of a double.

A short stint by J. DeMatteis returned Daredevil to his traditional red costume and Matt Murdock identity. Under writers Karl Kesel and later Joe Kelly , the title gained a lighter tone, with Daredevil returning to the lighthearted, wisecracking hero depicted by earlier writers.

Matt and Foggy who now knows of Matt's dual identities join a law firm run by Foggy's mother, Rosalind Sharpe. In , Daredevil ' s numbering was rebooted, with the title "canceled" with issue and revived a month later as part of the Marvel Knights imprint. Murdock experiences a crisis of faith exacerbated by the discovery that Karen Page has AIDS later revealed to be a hoax and her subsequent death at Bullseye 's hands. Smith was succeeded by writer-artist David Mack , who contributed the seven-issue "Parts of a Hole" vol. The arc introduced Maya Lopez, also known as Echo , a deaf martial artist.

Yellow miniseries presented another take on Daredevil's origins using letters written to Karen Page after her death. The series depicts the early rivalry between Matt Murdock and Foggy Nelson for Page's affection, and incorporates many events depicted in the earliest issues of Daredevil.

The supervillains the Owl and the Purple Man appear as antagonists. In this story, Daredevil credits Page with coining the phrase "The Man Without Fear", and she suggests to Daredevil he wear all maroon instead of dark red and yellow. Developments in this run included the introduction of romantic interest and future wife Milla Donovan , the outing once again of Murdock's secret identity, the reemergence of the Kingpin, and Daredevil's surrender to the FBI.

The impact of his exposure as Daredevil continued to be used as a plot point by both Bendis and writer Ed Brubaker and artist Michael Lark , who became the new creative team with Daredevil vol. Brubaker's first story arc had a new character masquerading as Daredevil in Hell's Kitchen. The series returned to its original numbering with issue Oct. New writer Andy Diggle revised the status quo, [53] [54] with Daredevil assuming leadership of the ninja army the Hand. Daredevil later appeared in the one-shot Dark Reign: Following this came the crossover story arc " Shadowland ", [56] in which it is revealed that Daredevil's recent actions after taking control of the Hand are the result of him being possessed by a demon.

Purged of the demon by his allies, Murdock departs New York, leaving his territory in the hands of the Black Panther in the briefly retitled series' Black Panther: Man Without Fear Murdock finds himself renewed in the miniseries Daredevil: Reborn 1—4 March—July , where he confronts a drug dealer with the power to make his opponents live their darkest fears, Murdock reaffirming his role as the man without fear as he confronts his enemy's taunts and resolves to return to New York. In July , Daredevil relaunched with vol.

Waid focused on emphasizing the character's powers and perception of the physical world. Two issues later, Nelson and Murdock have developed a new business strategy of serving as consulting counselors, by teaching clients how to represent themselves in court. At one point, Foggy begins to question Matt's sanity, ultimately leading to a fallout between the two. Daredevil volume 4 ended with issue 18 in September He will have a redesigned costume and a new apprentice in Samuel Chung, an undocumented immigrant who has been living in New York's Chinatown since he was a child, who has taken up the codename Blindspot. Following the release of Issue 28, much like with other Marvel series as part of the Marvel Legacy event, the Daredevil series official numbering was rebooted back to the original numbering which started with Issue which was released on November 8, , where Daredevil's longtime nemesis the Kingpin became the Mayor of New York City and begins a campaign to make costumed vigilantes officially criminals.

Charles Soule released his final Daredevil storyline "Death of Daredevil" during the October and November releases, in a 4-part bimonthly release which ended the series. Although the character is blind, his remaining four senses function with superhuman accuracy and sensitivity, giving him abilities far beyond the limits of a sighted person.

Few characters know that the hero cannot see. Daredevil developed a radar sense, [81] which is similar to echolocation. The Beyonder once restored Daredevil's eyesight, but, suspecting a trick on Beyonder's part, Daredevil immediately insisted that his blindness be restored. He takes out Batman and pours some acid into his eyes and shows him how it feels to see the world blurry. Over the course of time, Batman and Duke Thomas take them out.

Batman tells Two-Face he has a cure for him. Two-Face, who desperately wants the cure, tells Batman that he won't remove the poisonous clouds over Gotham unless Batman hands it over. In the end, Batman injects the cure, but it has no effect on Harvey, since it is really a sedative and knocks Two-Face out. In the end, Batman takes Two-Face back to Gotham. In the Watchmen sequel Doomsday Clock , Two-Face is among the villains that attend the underground meeting held by Riddler that talks about the Superman Theory.

Before his transformation into Two-Face, Harvey Dent had a successful career as Gotham's upstanding district attorney , proficient in nearly all matters pertaining to criminal law.

Following his disfigurement, he became obsessed with the number two and duality, and thus staged crimes centered around the number two—such as robbing buildings with '2' in the address or staging events that will take place at Two-Face has also proven to be a genius in criminal planning, and has constantly demonstrated a high-level of intelligence in plotting heists as a brilliant and respected mastermind in the criminal underworld. In addition, Two-Face is a skilled marksman, and regularly used a variety of firearms such as pistols , shotguns , grenade launchers , Tommy guns , knives and rocket launchers during his battles with Batman.

To further improve his proficiency in the use of firearms, Two-Face hired the sharpshooting assassin Deathstroke to train him. Face the Face story-arc revealed that Batman had previously trained Dent extensively in detective work and hand-to-hand combat enhancing his already proficient talent in both. It was shown he was a vicious fighter already in past stories, and by present time, possessed skills oddly close to military fighting level. His training by Batman and Deathstroke likely contributed to this. This section details various members of Harvey Dent's family across various interpretations of the Batman mythos.

The first impostor was Wilkins , Harvey Dent's butler, who uses makeup to suggest that Dent had suffered a relapse and disfigured his own face. This would give Wilkins the cover to commit crimes as Two-Face. Paul Sloane becomes the second imposter of Two-Face. An actor, Sloane is disfigured by an accident on the set of a biography film about Two-Face.

This occurred when a prop boy working on the film got jealous at the fact that his girlfriend developed a crush on Paul Sloane.

This causes the prop man to switch out the water with actual acid that was to be used for the trial scene. Sloane's mind snaps, and he begins to think he is Dent. Sloane recovers some of his own personality, but continues to commit crimes as Two-Face. After the Crisis on Infinite Earths event, the Paul Sloane character, with a near identical history to the pre- Crisis version, appears in Detective Comics Dent does this out of jealous bitterness and the hope that Sloane would commit crimes based on the number two, thus confusing Batman.

At the end of the story, Sloane is once again healed physically and mentally. They had originally offered Two-Face the part in the scheme, but his coin landed on the non-scarred side. During his impersonation of Two-Face, Batman discovered that the Two-Face was an imposter when he killed a security guard without consulting the coin. When the real Two-Face learns about this, he captures Sloan and disfigures his face. Scarecrow then experiments on him with fear toxins. Driven insane and deprived of fear, the Charlatan becomes obsessed with both getting revenge on the criminals who hired him and completing his mission to kill Batman.

Charlatan is defeated by Batman and incarcerated at Arkham Asylum. The third imposter of Two-Face is petty criminal George Blake who passed himself off as a manager of the anti-crime exhibition. However, he is not actually disfigured but is wearing make-up.

Furthermore, his makeup is worn on the opposite side of his face to Harvey Dent or Paul Sloane which easily enabled Batman to identify him as an imposter. Batman defeats George Blake and clears Harvey Dent's name. Also noteworthy is a story where Batman himself is temporarily turned into Two-Face via a potion. As mentioned above, Harvey Dent does return as Two-Face in the s. With the establishment of the multiverse , the Two-Face of Earth-Two i. He meets Lois Lane and Clark Kent , and his shared name with the latter creates confusion.

His plans were foiled by Damian Wayne , the fifth Robin and Batman's biological son. Unlike the original Two-Face, this version of the character was born deformed with a second face, rather than being scarred by acid or fire, and flips two coins instead of one. He is then killed when a machine falls on him. Another Two-Face-Two is briefly mentioned during the course of the DC One Million storyline, with the Batman of the rd century comments how this villain was defeated when the second Batman convinced him that the law of averages proved his coin-tossing would ultimately cause him to make more 'good' decisions than he would 'bad' ones.

As one of Batman 's most recognizable and popular opponents, Two-Face appears in numerous comics which are not considered part of the regular DC continuity, including:. In the alternate future setting of The Dark Knight Returns , plastic surgery returns Dent's face to normal, but at the unforeseen cost of permanently destroying the good-hearted Harvey Dent personality.

The monstrous Two-Face is left in permanent control—to the extent that one of his henchmen now refers to him only as "Face". He attempts to blow up the Gotham Twin Towers with his face swathed in bandages, with the intention of dying in the explosions. He then sees both sides of his face as scarred, or as he later says to Batman when he captures him, "At least both sides match". Later in the series, his psychiatrist who is characterized as completely inept describes Dent's condition as "recovering nicely".

In the Elseworlds story Batman: Sinestro , after becoming deranged from absorbing Joe Chill 's mind, then scars Dent's face and gives him powers similar to those of the main continuity's Eclipso. He is euthanized by Batman by the end of the story. Eye for an Eye crossover book, partnered with Marvel villain Mr. Hyde for the purpose of using Hyde as an "incubator" to grow an organic microchip , giving Hyde drugs to speed up this process regardless of the fact that this would kill him.

It is also revealed in this book that Harvey Dent had once been friends with Matt Murdock, who is secretly Daredevil. Prior to his disfigurement, Dent believed in giving criminals a chance at rehabilitation , while Murdock believed in final justice; having reversed his outlook to what Dent had once believed, Murdock talks Two-Face out of killing Hyde without Two-Face using his coin. Two-Face, however, insists that act is merely "the last of Harvey Dent". In the Elseworlds comic Batman: Masque , a pastiche of The Phantom of the Opera , Harvey Dent takes the role of the Phantom , as a former dancer who is disfigured after he sustains a serious burn to the left side when he was caught in the middle of a confrontation between Batman and a criminal.

In the Elseworlds book Batman: Red Rain , where Batman became a vampire , Two-Face, having only recently suffered his accident, forms a new gang accompanied by Killer Croc as his muscle and forges an alliance with Commissioner Gordon and Alfred Pennyworth to stop Batman when his insane thirst for blood drives him to kill his old enemies.

As he confronts Gordon, Two-Face is interrupted by Batman, restored to life after Alfred sacrificed himself so that his blood could restore his master. Batman drives two crossbow bolts into each side of Two-Face's head, citing it as "One for each face". Claws of the Cat-woman , explorer and adventurer Finnegan Dent is revealed to be stealing the sacred artifacts of an African tribe in the lost city of Mnemnom.

During an encounter with Batman and Tarzan -Tarzan had been visiting Gotham to attend to business when Batman learned about Dent's true agenda, teaming up with the Dark Knight to help him stop Dent from raiding the city-half of Dent's face is mauled by a lion, prompting him to decide to remain in Mnemnom and establish himself as its ruler on the grounds that society would have no place for a man with half a face.

He is last seen being sealed away in a tomb of the rulers of Mnemnom after he triggers an explosion in a fight with Tarzan and Batman, Tarzan informing Dent as he takes the unconscious Batman to safety that taking Dent back to Gotham to face trial is Batman's idea of justice rather than his; he later tells Batman that Dent died when the falling rubble that knocked Batman unconscious crushed him. Two Faces , Two-Face is depicted in the Victorian era, opposed by his friend Bruce Wayne after Bruce uses a potion on himself that he devised to try and cure Two-Face's split personality.

Wayne's serum allows him to act as a superhuman Batman, but he eventually learns that the potion has also given him a split personality in the form of a ruthless murderer known as the Joker. When Bruce realizes the truth about his new state, he delivers a confession to Gordon and Two-Face before allowing himself to die as he transforms into the Joker once again, Dent taking Wayne's perfected serum to stabilize his mental state and allow him to act as the new Batman.

In the Elseworlds series Catwoman: Guardian of Gotham , model Darcy Dent has half her face scarred when a rival model hires a hitman to lace her facial cream with acid. Unlike the regular Two-Face, Darcy does not rely on a coin toss to make her decisions, nor does she suffer from any type of personality disorder. Her motive is simply revenge based against those responsible for her disfigurement, and her motif is mutilating her victims' faces and wearing a half business suit with a spiked metal bikini.

Thrillkiller universe , there are two versions of Two-Face. One is Detective Duell, a corrupt officer on the Gotham City Police Department , whose face is scarred in a manner similar to the version of Two-Face in the mainstream continuity. Duell is arrested at the end of Thrillkiller: Thrillkiller '62 , Harvey Dent is the new District Attorney. He appears at the end as the new mayor of Gotham. The new Earth-Three features a heroic female counterpart to Two-Face: Evelyn has three personalities Irrational, Practical, and Hedonistic. To portray this, she wears a costume that is divided in three parts.

Her right side favors loud fabrics like polka-dots, stripes, or plaids; her left side favors animal prints like tiger or leopard; and the center is a wide stripe of green.

Over her leotard she wears a leather jacket that is a brown bomber jacket on the right and a black biker jacket on the left. Her face is not scarred but is instead usually painted all white with a vertical green center stripe and dark green or black lipstick; sometimes she is shown with her face parted into light green on the right, white in the middle, and mauve on the left.

This was a good tale. It nipped along at a fast pace and kept me involved. It loses a star because the writing was sloppy at times. On a few occasions, I found myself thinking of how the sentences could have been constructed better. This is a good detective book. There is suspense, but it's not gritty- instead, there is some light humour thrown in.

This is book 2 in a series and it gives quite a bit away about what happened in the first one, so I recommend that you start with book 1!! What made the experience of listening to Vigilante the most enjoyable? This is the second book that I have read in the series and the characters really do seem to be coming alive this time.

I have recently 'read' books by Rachel Abbott and Elizabeth Corley and these are definitely of a similar genre and pace. I was fortunate enough to have to drive for around three hours and the journey just flew by. I must admit that Becky Hindley's accents are slightly annoying, but then the author clearly describes characters from all around the country and to that extent she makes a valiant effort. I have really enjoyed this series. The characters are well written and the plots are engaging. I started this series about two months ago and since then I have been hooked.

Jessica's character is likeable and easy to relate to. I now eagerly await the new book in the series coming in As usual a good story. Gets a bit silly at times and far fetched, but none the less a good and enjoyable listen. Enjoyed, but read it far too quickly! I like the reader. Another reviewer said that they recognised the story, but I didn't and, as Audible could testify, I've read hundreds! Will now move onto book 3. Main chaeachter, Jessica Daniel is rather unbelievable though, she seems. I persevered with this book as the story just won out over the lacklustre narration.
