And her treacherous sister Judah saw it. How long shall thy vain thoughts lodge within thee? I am pained at my very heart; my heart maketh a noise in me; I cannot hold my peace, because thou hast heard, O my soul, the sound of the trumpet, the alarm of war.

Though thou clothest thyself with crimson, though thou deckest thee with ornaments of gold, though thou rentest thy face with painting, in vain shalt thou make thyself fair; thy lovers will despise thee, they will seek thy life. I will pour it out upon the children abroad, and upon the assembly of young men together: But they said, We will not walk therein. But they said, We will not hearken. Lo, certainly in vain made he it; the pen of the scribes is in vain.
Why have they provoked me to anger with their graven images, and with strange vanities? Be not afraid of them; for they cannot do evil, neither also is it in them to do good. The LORD of hosts is his name. Righteous art thou, O Lord, when I plead with thee: Wherefore doth the way of the wicked prosper?
I will not pity, nor spare, nor have mercy, but destroy them. Judah shall be carried away captive all of it, it shall be wholly carried away captive. For the greatness of thine iniquity are thy skirts discovered, and thy heels made bare. Woe unto thee, O Jerusalem! I sent them not, neither have I commanded them, neither spake unto them: I have brought upon them against the mother of the young men a spoiler at noonday: I have caused him to fall upon it suddenly, and terrors upon the city.

I have neither lent on usury, nor men have lent to me on usury; yet every one of them doth curse me. Behold, as the clay is in the potter's hand, so are ye in mine hand, O house of Israel. Come, and let us smite him with the tongue, and let us not give heed to any of his words. Remember that I stood before thee to speak good for them, and to turn away thy wrath from them.
I am in derision daily, every one mocketh me. But his word was in mine heart as a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I was weary with forbearing, and I could not stay. Report, say they, and we will report it.
All my familiars watched for my halting, saying, Peradventure he will be enticed, and we shall prevail against him, and we shall take our revenge on him. This hath been thy manner from thy youth, that thou obeyedst not my voice. I have not spoken to them, yet they prophesied. Your Web browser is not enabled for JavaScript.

But in their own days, in real time, there is hardly a prophet who has redressed the social, religious, or political wrongs of Israel; the prophets barked, but the caravan kept moving.
Moreover, when a prophet dared to deviate from his usual message of morality and challenged the existing order, he was declared an enemy of the people. The comparison of the prophet to a public intellectual is intended not to diminish the importance of the former, but to emphasize the responsibility of the latter.
The strength of the prophet as public intellectual derives from his faith and his deference to the word of God. His intent is never to mollify the masses. Four hundred prophets forecasting in perfect unison do not a true prophecy make. Does society want to hear that other still, small voice? Wherever the government, press, and tycoons form a controlling triad, any dissenting opinions will be quickly snuffed out.
Worse, prophets are sometimes bought off by interested parties and, through the combined forces of money and media, forcibly mold public opinion. The voice of God should therefore be sought in those discordant voices that do not toe the party line.
