Confessions of a Lip Reading Mom

The title, the cover and the description are very misleading. I expected a fun memoir about living with hearing loss. The author almost never really talks about her hearing loss, the book is all about her dysfunctional family and church, and endless Bible quotes and weird dreams and paranormal encounters. It is the little things we take for granted that we miss most when we can no longer hear, see, or touch. Her though-provoking book, Confessions of a Lip Reading Mom, will have you chuckling and caring about your God-given senses more and less about your losses.

I started Confessions of a Lip Reading Mom with the expectation that it would be a story about life with hearing loss. Yet her growing deafness is just one thread in a very full and rich life, albeit a thread that makes communication difficult. And Shanna Groves is, above all, a communicator.

Shanna opens her heart to many things she once overlooked. Not only the sounds of things we all take for granted, but also relationships between her and other family members and God. Shanna brings her vision to life with every detail she expresses. That is how I felt as I was reading this book. I gripped the book eager to continue curious what would be at the beginning of each page I reached.
