U.S. Presidents (Ken Jennings’ Junior Genius Guides)

For instance, did you know that President Carter was attacked by a Swamp Rabbit while fishing and was scared of rabbits ever since? I would have students in a small group with me. Every student would already have selected a President to write about and will have started a report about him with the basic facts. Each student would have their own copy of the book and we would work as a group looking through the book and discussing different text features and facts that we find.

The students would take notes about their president during our conversations, and then they would use these facts in their reports. These are the kinds of facts students tend to remember and the kind that create an interest in the man they are writing about. I believe that most students would have their interest tickled by these fun and sometimes bizarre stories of all the presidents. That is why I decided to choose this book over other books about presidents.

I had a hard time putting it down myself. US Presidents gives students a list of pros and cons of living in the White House. It follows the layout of a class periods. It is then structured into question and answers. The book is very interactive and contains graphic organizers, factoids and a test at the end of the book. They would also be able to generalize about the life of presidential families.

Students could look for text to prove their generalizations. School Library Journal http: Wildfire Run , March Horn Book Guide http: Oct 10, Annie rated it it was ok Shelves: I enjoy the humor of Ken Jennings and his voice is all over this book. The tone is funny enough to appeal to kids as well as the illustrations by Mike Lowry , and the book has plenty of references to appeal to adults that may be over kids' heads unless you have a very pop culture savvy kid.

Presidential trivia books are not very unique, and there are trivia bits in here that I have seen in every trivia book Reagan like jelly beans, Taft got stuck in a bathtub, etc.

U.S. Presidents

I think the visual aspect of this book would be appealing to students because it just looks fun. However, I would only feature it as perhaps a selection for a classroom library. I think using this in social studies instruction would emphasize that social studies is just trivial content and a bunch of facts to be memorized. I would rank this much higher for entertainment value, the low grade comes from the lack of instructional value.

Jun 04, Renata rated it really liked it Shelves: I picked this up while tidying the children's department, skimmed it, and ended up reading the whole thing on my desk shift. It's very funny and has some good information too. It's definitely the kind of thing I would have eaten up as a nerdy child. While it does have an air of whimsical disrespect, it is a fairly whitewashy upbeat look at the presidents--like there's a pop-up about all the different things that George Washington's fake teeth were made out of but it doesn't mention the teeth of I picked this up while tidying the children's department, skimmed it, and ended up reading the whole thing on my desk shift.

While it does have an air of whimsical disrespect, it is a fairly whitewashy upbeat look at the presidents--like there's a pop-up about all the different things that George Washington's fake teeth were made out of but it doesn't mention the teeth of slaves as one. Which is probably OK because that's horrifying and kids can maybe wait a minute to learn that?

Fun facts about the presidents; think conversation starters. This is a book for a child who already knows the basics about the presidents because a lot of that isn't covered here. Questions are peppered throughout the text and humorous doodles appear in the margins giving the book a notebook feel. The information is good, I certainly learned a few things, but the tone of the text is fairly snarky.
