The Balkars of Southern Russia and Their Deportation (1944-57)
Editorial Reviews
I strongly recommend this book to any group or team traveling to this region seeking to bring hope and joy to those who once faced nothing but death and desperation. I am deeply impressed with both the depth of Karen's research and her love for this tiny people group. The Balkars have suffered greatly in the last century, and they desperately need the peace of God in their hearts. It is my hope that this book will contribute to the growth of general awareness of the Caucasus peoples by the Western audience, and to more active involvement in promoting the work of the Gospel in this unstable and unreached part of the world.
This book should be launched from the peaks of the highest European mountain, Mt. Elbrus, in Kabardino- Balkaria, so that the 1. Better late than never! This is a striking work which is and will be forever an unexpected recognition to the memory of those thousands of innocent victims of the Stalin- Beria genocide.
Karen Baker has blended her personal experience with groundbreaking research of the Balkarians. This volume is a 'must read' for both those studying the social dynamics of people movements and anyone wanting a better grasp of the folk ways and mores and devastation of a victimized and deported people group. In all my travels around the world there has never been an experience quite like sitting in the home of a Balkar family, enjoying a meal in the midst of the breath- taking North Caucasus Mountains.
This book will give you a greater glimpse of how the deportation of and attempted repatriation of have so drastically affected the lives of the Balkar people in the past and present.

You will also learn much about their rich cultural heritage and how it impacts their everyday life. I highly recommend this book for anyone who desires to learn more about the neglected peoples of the North Caucasus. I was quite impressed in reading the book by Karen Baker's passion in telling the story of the mistreatment, suffering, and eventual deportation of the Balkar peoples over many decades by the Soviet Union and Russian Empire. Reading history can be boring and depressing sometimes, but Karen held my interest throughout the entire book with her excellent writing style.
Balkarian Genetics - DNA of the Balkars in the North Caucasus
She spent much time and energy doing the research necessary in gathering the facts and interviewing victims of these awful atrocities who were driven from their homelands. Striving to be accurate, fair, and sensitive to both individuals and people groups is a challenge Karen enjoys, and hopefully, you, the reader, will appreciate this approach as you read books from the Hidden Peoples of the World series.

The deportation left deep scars and a fear that it could happen again. It was hard to read their stories of how terrible they were treated, but the deportation made them a stronger people, not weaker. One man even attributed his becoming a Christian to the deportation.
