These are indisputable witnesses to the precise movements of the commercial activity of the times. Furthermore, they represent an important and unique sample of Mediterranean underwater heritage, which document almost four millennia of history. This book takes as its focus not only the wrecks of ancient ships and their cargoes, but also, wherever possible, the topography of maritime landing places, areas of anchorage and of shelter from prevailing winds, and thus of those sites related to ancient shipping and to the most heavily travelled routes of the Lower Tyrrhenian sea.
The research strategy adopted is the result of a combination of archaeological, geological, and marine meteorological data, seeking to evaluate the interaction between two main maritime components, either in terms of the ancient economy or of the maritime landing places involved in the ancient seafaring world.

The interdisciplinary approach adopted in this research also provides new data on relative sea-level change during the late Holocene, while at the same time bringing together diverse approaches and methods for the analysis of submerged landscapes. It also aims to act as a blueprint for future directions in this specific field. In this light, sumptuous architectonic furnishings made of different variety of marbles were visualized as the most lavish qualifying component of the entire system. Evidence of this centralized production organization — which from quarries and factories reached the most remote parts of the Ecumenical Christian community is offered by monuments safely arrived at their final destination, as well as by marble cargoes shipwrecked along the route. Marmoratae and shipwrecks, like the one recovered off the coast of Marzamemi in the second half of the last century with its cargo of sculptures and marble liturgical components intended for a church represent a powerful confirmation of the production-dissemination system of marble liturgical pieces in the proto-Byzantine age.
The aim of this paper is to introduce new data, comparing and contrasting new and existing knowledge, as well as to re-examine still unsettled issues such as the final destination of the Marzamemi ship which wrecked in the seabed off south-eastern Sicily. Egypt, the city and harbour of Alexandria. Abstract Precise measurements of submerged archaeological markers in the Siracusa coast Southeastern Sicily, Italy provide new data on relative sealevel change during the late Holocene. Four submerged archaeological sites have been Four submerged archaeological sites have been studied and investigated through direct observations.
Two of them are Greek archaic in age 2. The positions of the archaeological markers have been measured with respect to present sea level, corrected for tide and pressure at the time of surveys. These data were compared with predicted sea-level rise curves for the Holocene using a glacio-hydro-isostatic model.
The comparison with the curve for the southeastern Sicily coast yields a tectonic component of relative sea-level change related to regional uplift. Uplift rates between 0.

Claire Calcagno and Elena Flavia Castagnino Berlinghieri discovered fortuitously an unpublished manuscript written by Honor Frost about her experiences as director of the Punic ship excavation project in Sicily during the s.
Honor Frost was responsible for finding, excavating, treating and displaying the timbers of the Punic naval vessel that came to grief off the coast near Marsala, western Sicily, in the mid-third century BCE. Since the wreck-site's discovery in , Frost worked for a number of years with the essential help of the local community and with underwater archaeologists who shared their often experimental expertise in maritime excavation and conservation techniques.

In addition to the difficulties of managing a complex archaeological project in a region with relatively modest amenities at the time, Frost had to contend with an increasingly intractable combination of local and national bureaucratic hurdles, over the course of several decades. On the one hand, this paper will show how the harbor systems were strongly influenced by the constraints imposed by the location itself i. On the other hand, the paper will attempt to clarify how the design of the harbor systems may reflect political and economic strategies. The results of this exploration will be presented and will show how an interdisciplinary approach can help us to better appreciate two of the most significant harbors in the Greek colonial world.
Special Talk closing the exhibition "Storms, War and Shipwrecks: Pioneer of Underwater Archaeology, Honor Frost One of the earliest pioneers of underwater archaeology, whose legacy is explored in the exhibition, was the remarkable British woman, Honor Frost — Frost trained as an artist in Frost trained as an artist in London and at the Ruskin School of Art in Oxford and she spent the first part of her career working as a designer in ballet. But her enduring passion was for diving. In her book Under the Mediterranean , she describes how she started out as a young woman by submerging herself in a well at a home in Wimbledon using a garden hose.

During the last decades have been published several papers that presented more estimates of the relative sea level change using these indicators. Different results can be mainly addressed to: With this goal, it is crucial to define rigorous guidelines for the use of archaeological indicators for relative sea level studies. In particular, the functional elevation that must be carefully estimated for the different structures.
This is defined from the elevation of specific architectural parts with respect to the local mean sea level at that location and at the time of its construction. It provides the basis for determining sea-level change depending on the type of structure, its use and the local tide amplitudes.

In addition, to understand the geophysical significance of the archeological observations for the individual sites, must be considered that the Mediterranean basin is affected by geodynamic processes and landscape evolution in consequence of active tectonics, volcanism, glacio-hydro-isostatic and eustatic factors.
Focusing on material and methods, here we show and discuss previous results and new relative sea level change estimates for the Mediterranean and the Tyrrhenian coast of Italy from a robust set of Roman age fish tanks, harbors and instrumental data.
