Our primary vision was to bring students who never even dreamed of going to college to not only see success in their undergraduate studies, but reach even higher to achieve their potential by continuing into graduate programs. These students are most commonly the first in their families to attend college and are frequently unprepared to deal with the many problems that face Latino students upon arriving to campus.

Until they have developed friendships and effective strategies for adjusting to campus life, Latino students frequently undergo homesickness, feel socially and culturally isolated, struggle academically, and also face problems similar to those of other freshmen. These problems, particularly social and cultural isolation, are hardships for Latino students, given their small numbers on campus and the distance from their families and communities.

These adjustment issues place Latino students at a high risk to abandon their studies at IUP.

In particular, it assisted Latino students who did not receive a BOG scholarship. The culturally- and linguistically-centered approach of College Prep was unique to the program.

It met the specific needs of immigrant and first- and second-generation Latino students by incorporating their diverse Latin American heritage, Spanish language variations, and regional experiences not necessarily shared with other minority groups. Too often, these needs and the proper staffing are not considered in one-size-fits-all retention measures.

A—Z Index Find People. Contact three individuals generally faculty to act as references. The best references generally come from instructors who have taught you recently, and better yet, have had you for more than one class.

Check to see if they would be willing to write a letter of recommendation for you. Be sure to allow them at least two weeks more is better to prepare the recommendation and be sure to let them know what the deadlines are. This part of your application carries a lot of weight; do not take it lightly!

The Bill Buck Memorial Scholarship asks for a one-page, double-spaced essay on the applicant's career and personal goals and how his or her disability has impacted his or her life. The evaluation of character is based on more than just grades; the approach to challenges and evidence of a strong work ethic are also important factors.

GPA may be some indicator of potential, but the ability to reach that potential is the characteristics that will set applicants apart.

Many times what you think is insignificant could be valuable to put on an application. You may be asked to write essays on these topics: What are your educational and career goals? Where do you see yourself five years from now? Why should you receive this scholarship? What makes you stand out amongst the rest? Read a GOOD newspaper; broaden your global knowledge.

College Prep 101

You may be asked what is going on around the world or to give your thoughts on a current event. Pick references who will give you a good recommendation. Ask them if they have any problems writing you a positive letter of reference. If you have to choose, pick references who know you rather than those with prestige.

Pick references that will get their letters in on time. Give them adequate information to write a good letter of recommendation, a copy of the scholarship application, your resume, etc. Analyze the Organization Begin by researching the organization offering the scholarship; learn about its values and purpose in offering the award.



Gathering these facts will help to identify points in your own character or experiences that should be emphasized in your essay.
