It follows a girl, Annie Johnston, through her life and all the struggles she faced. I really liked it because it told a historical story in a way that everyday people like me can understand. Another big reason I liked it is because it had to do with horses and was important to the future of the United States.
The best part of the book was the empowering element that the author provided through the theme. I would recommend this book to people interested in a little touch of United States history. People who read this book need to b semi-good readers though because it uses more of an old west sort of language.
Overall I really liked this book and learned a lot from it. Jan 30, Angie rated it it was amazing. This book is the reason I became interested in activism focused on America's wild horse and burro populations in elementary school. Mar 03, Chilton Miller rated it really liked it. Though I may not agree with all of Wild Horse Annie's thoughts about wild horses, she still had a wonderful story to tell.
Jun 06, Kim Hampton rated it it was amazing. This was one of my favorite books as a kid and I loved reading it with my 12 year old daughter. An inspiring story about fighting for what is right and never giving up. Nov 21, NebraskaIcebergs rated it it was amazing Shelves: What are you passionate about? Who supports your interest? Have you ever been an activist? So does her family and her future husband.
One day after spying a cattle truck of horses more dead than alive, Annie became an activist. This is her story. I love this book!

Every time I read it, and I have read it multiple times, I am unable to put it aside. He believes God is training her to be different and has a plan for her. However, one morning while she is five, Annie wakens to a changed world—one full of pain and polio. Yet even in her youngest years, she is a fighter. Before long, she has regained her strength and is plummeting into adolescence, marriage, and ultimately the battle that changes her life and the mustang world.

Horse meat was being used to make pet food. Moreover, these feral horses were being accused of grazing on ranch land. The highs and lows that Annie faced to establish a bill to protect the mustang form the bulk of the drama of Mustang Wild Spirit of the West. Without the background chapters, we might not root for Annie or understand the dire plight of the mustang before I already know the outcome but, just like in Columbo mysteries where the murderer is revealed at the beginner but I still wish to see the case being solved, I remain anxious to know how will Annie save the mustang.
This time, something surprising struck me about the book: I loved how one day after Annie returned from the hospital where she was treated for polio, she tucked a chicken egg from a nest into her pocket before school and the baby chick hatched there! She never forgot that God had a plan for her and the mustang.

This knowledge, along with the support from family, townspeople, politicians, and even children, helped her persevere through many setbacks. While I love discovering recent releases, I am also slowly rereading old favorites. The beauty of books is that not only can they entertain but can also change us. Marguerite Henry is responsible for instilling within me both an admiration of horses and an activist spirit. Whether you love animals, their history, or just a riveting story, Mustang Wild Spirit of the West is an exhilarating read.
Oct 01, Rose rated it really liked it Shelves: This was pretty good. I love horses, don't get me wrong, but I hate conservationalists more than I love horses, because they invariably destroy what they claim they are protecting. While I was glad the mustangs can't be slaughtered off anymore, the BLM is a terrible system and is not at all worthy of managing wildlife. Mustangs are wildlife, and as such, should be treated like any other species. Ranchers do have to thin out animals that over breed, or they loose their grazing land.
There shouldn This was pretty good. There shouldn't be an agency making wads and wads of cash by rounding up and selling mustangs, there should be a season where you can go catch one of your own, or have the BLM do it for a modest price Like the price of an elk tag. Conservation administrations have become so bad that nobody knows half of what they do.
Therefore I have removed one star for promotion of conservation. Had I still been a child, I would have loved this book. It is well written, full of charm and has a wonderful story. I would encourage any older children and adults to read this as it gives a good account of what life was like in the old West. Aug 09, Rachel Jackson rated it really liked it. Marguerite Henry is generally known for her kids books, and her stories about Misty of Chincoteague are what she's most famous for — the horse world of that little island is her niche. That's why I was pleasantly surprised by the subject of Mustang: Wild Spirit of the West.
It could have been a paltry attempt to explain the history of mustang slaughtering, perhaps from some distant point of view, in context with Chincoteague; instead, Henry puts the reader right in the action, growing up with An Marguerite Henry is generally known for her kids books, and her stories about Misty of Chincoteague are what she's most famous for — the horse world of that little island is her niche. I'm a political junkie, so I love hearing about legislation no matter the context, and that's what I'd like to see more of. I wanted to hear more about Annie's trip to Washington, D. Even if Henry explains everything through Annie's eyes, there is still a lot to be desired, and I would have liked to see it from the legislators's views.
Admittedly, not the best topic for a children's book, though. I also wanted to hear more about what happened to Charley and Annie's grandmother. They both seemed to have a profound impact on her life, as was portrayed well in several occasions, but the epilogue was not that helpful in explaining what happened to everyone. Sometimes I felt that the characters, besides Annie, were too distant and I couldn't really understand their motivations or actions. Overall, though, a very good book for such a heavy subject, in a kids book at least.
It's not one of those beloved childhood books you fall in love with and never forget, but it's a good one. Owen's review Age 9: An awesome book with lots of action and other cool stuff. It was very exciting. I first read this book 30 or so years ago when I was about Owen's age. A huge fan of Ms. Henry's Chincoteague books, I remember struggling with the disturbing brutality described in the book. It took me two tries to actually finish it, something which was rare for me at the time.
I remember crying as I read. Beyond the difficult subject matter, I remember noticing that the tone of Owen's review Age 9: Beyond the difficult subject matter, I remember noticing that the tone of the book was very different than that of Ms. It is only on re-reading this book as an adult that I understood why; while this book is ostensibly about horses like Henry's other books, it is actually the biography of an amazingly brave woman, Annie Bronn Johnston, who took on an entire industry and the government to win some measure of protection for her beloved mustangs.
For parents reading this book with their children, I think it is important to know that the issues Ms. Henry covers in the book are tied to current events. While mustangs are no longer rounded up to make dog food, the debate about whether they ought to be protected in the wild or rounded up rages on in places like Montana, where the horses compete with domestic cattle for food on public rangelands. Sharing the book and then sharing news stories about the current debates can lead to really great discussions with your child. Nov 11, Melody rated it really liked it.
I know I read this as a kid, because I remembered bits and pieces. I especially remembered Robert Lougheed's illustrations, which are simply lovely. It's still not the elusive book I am searching so hard for, but that book must also be about Wild Horse Annie because the protagonist is put in a body cast and comes out with one side of her face higher than the other- but the one I'm looking for also features the rhyme 'Hickory Dickory Dock' in some prominent way, and there's an illustration of a g I know I read this as a kid, because I remembered bits and pieces.

But that's not what I'm here to say. Wild Horse Annie was a hero to me, still is. She was brave and committed to keeping the wild Mustangs alive. Because of her work, you can still see them running free if you are lucky. Because of her work, if you want to buy an "excess" mustang, you can get a live one, instead of one ground up for dog food. Henry's book brings all of Annie's heroism to the forefront, but gives the reader a lot of warm, interesting backstory as well.
