What You Wish For follows in the path of Mark Edward's previous books with it's relentless twists and surprises. You can guess what will happen next, but you'll be wrong.
The characters seem to come to life and the reader can identify with every single person we are introduced and glean something important from the experience of meeting them within the pages of this book. The ending is beautiful, yet bittersweet. Another fantastic offering from Mark Edwards which no self-respecting reader will allow themselves to miss out on!!
I had such high hopes for this book. Mark Edwards happens to be one of my most sought after authors at the moment. Sadly, the ending did not parallel those introductory emotions. It felt I had such high hopes for this book. It felt like being on a roller coaster, getting to the top of the first high drop, getting stuck and never making it back down.
I wished there was more sci-fi and more aliens. Instead, there was a lot of chase and a lot of ambiguity. The ending felt a bit rushed. We spent the entire length of the book in search of a girl only to find her and quickly send her off again. I love Mark Edwards and this novel by no means was terrible or turned me off from him.
I am looking forward to it. Dec 21, CatchTheseWords rated it did not like it. I didn't enjoy this book at all. The writing was painful and the plot was more than a bit ridiculous. The main character, Richard, honestly came across as such a creep. Reading his descriptions of Marie and his thought processes made my skin crawl, and he was one of the more likable characters.
I didn't care about Marie, or what had happened to her.

All I knew of her were Richards mindless ramblings and not a lot else, so when she did go missing I really wasn't bothered. I carried on reading becaus I didn't enjoy this book at all. I carried on reading because I was mildly interested in the extremes some groups will go to, and I suppose at least the ending was moderately realistic.
I wanted to like this book, but I couldn't at all. Really didnt enjpy this book. Very boring and slow and maybe because im not into aliens etc. Liked the start of this book even abit far fetched you still want to know what happens. Do you believe in aliens? Absolutely, thoroughly enjoyed this book.
The story was so different to what I would usually read, but yet it had me hooked from the first few pages. Very cleverly written, a thought provoking story that takes you into a supernatural world.
Are you a believer? Personally, I think not! Richard, the leading male character in the story, is not a believer either. But he falls in love with Marie, who not only believes in little grey aliens, but also believes Do you believe in aliens? But he falls in love with Marie, who not only believes in little grey aliens, but also believes that she is amongst the chosen few to represent earth This is a story of belief, of love, of betrayal and of the unknown.
Mark Edwards has yet again blown me away with another great novel. Jan 08, Sarah Key rated it liked it. I find Mark Edward's books somewhat underwhelming. I also read The Magpies. He writes well from his male protagonists's perspectives but the open ended conclusions are a little bit of an author cop-out I feel.
His impressive book sales mean that I am probably in the minority with this view. I find it almost really good, but then disappointing. Nov 09, Eva Pleska rated it did not like it. Do not listen to audiobook version read by Ralph Lister I hated his narration. Ehh was OK didn't care for it that much.
What You Wish For
Sep 08, Gretchen rated it it was ok. I really wanted to like this book more than I did. I had high expectations for it because I really enjoyed Follow You Home. Richard, a professional photographer, meets and becomes instantly obsessed with Marie, an alien-loving freak. He invites this young woman to live with him, even though he has reservations about her sanity.
Oh, but they're so in love, despite her secretive browser closing whenever he walks in the room and meetings with other UFO watchers. After what we think is I really wanted to like this book more than I did. After what we think is several months it could have been several weeks for all we know of bliss, Marie disappears soon after the alleged death of her friend and former lover, Andrew. Get a clue, Richard. No note, no Dear John letter, no forwarding address. Even her own sickly mother has no idea where she could be. By now, anyone who has a brain knows that she doesn't want to be found and that her disappearance has something to do with Andrew.
Richard enlists his co-worker, a newspaperman named Simon, to help him find his beloved. Richard is so stupid and obsessed that he even quits his job to look for this chick. Man, she must have been great in bed! Richard begins his focus by searching out her UFO loving buddies and finds himself in the dark world of alien porn. Pictures of young woman photoshopped in seductive poses with people dressed as aliens, or as they call them, "greys.
Meanwhile, Richard discovers that Andrew has a dark past that involves controlling others, rabble rausing and protesting. No one liked Andrew and every time his name is mentioned, people gasp and cover their mouths. Richard then torments himself with thoughts of Marie and Andrew having sex, which is somehow less repulsive than the alien porn. Dumb Richard seeks out the porn king and tells him that he's into the alien porn and wants to photograph young porn stars. The porn king arranges a "meeting" between Richard and two young aspiring porn models.
Instead of playing along to acquire info about Marie's whereabouts, impatient, stupid Richard blurts out that he's not really there to photograph them, but wants information on his girlfriend, who has gone missing. The porn king finds out about the ruse, goes to Richard's flat and beats up poor Simon, who was in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Richard is getting nowhere fast. He then hops a plane to Portland where a huge alien convention is being held. He meets up with Zara, another alien freak who takes him to the convention with Rick, an undercover agent who has also fooled Zara into believing he is into aliens. Seems that all you have to do to be welcomed into a stranger's home is tell them that you believe aliens will contact us soon.
Zara wants to have sex with Richard, which is tempting for him since she looks just like Marie!
Be careful what you wish for, you may GET IT!
Of course, he turns her down because he as we know, he still loves Marie. Zara, Richard and Rick head to the convention headquarters. Everything seems to be going well until Richard, once again, blurts out his real reason for being there. He just wants to find his girlfriend. He's locked up by the head alien lover cult leader and is asked to leave. Somehow, the porn king tracks Richard down, but is killed by the goons who guard the cult. So, Richard takes off and decides to go back to the U.
Coincidence - he runs into one of the original alien freaks who knows Marie and Andrew. How crazy and convenient is that? He tells dumbshit Richard that they are very much alive and gives him the info about where they are. Richard and Simon infiltrate the cult run by Andrew and Richard sees Marie in the window, but she turns away.
She doesn't want to be found, you idiot! He goes back home and finds a very long email from Marie which explains everything. At this point, I had to wonder if the author knew how to appropriately end a mystery. He wrapped up everything so neatly in this email. Marie and some of the other girls did alien porn to pay the cult leader's bills. She is in the cult, along with several other lost souls and the next day, they are going to be taken up with the spaceship. Of course, you know that what they mean is mass suicide. Richard and Simon arrive on the scene the next day and find that all but 2 of the cult members have thrown themselves off a cliff.
All but Andrew and Marie, whose bodies were never found. Not what I was expecting.

A story of beliefs, morals, ethics, Mark Edwards What You Wish For is a psychological thriller which crosses over into the world of UFOs, cults, and the fantasy dark side. A story of beliefs, morals, ethics, and codes by which we live our lives.
Beliefs in something and the lengths you are willing to go to preserve that belief. A woman who needs nurturing and finds someone as a Savior—and those who are not strong enough to help themselves. The relationship between Richard and Marie hinged on obsession. This was not my kind of book, as a little out there, and not my normal genre. However, Edwards is a talented writer, and highly recommend his latest book, Because She Loves Me, as more my style! Look forward to reading Magpies. Mar 18, Tracey Walsh rated it really liked it. Marie Walker has vanished from the face of the earth… Her besotted boyfriend, newspaper photographer Richard Thompson, vows to find her, convinced that Marie's unusual beliefs hold the key".
This story gives a whole new meaning to the phrase Star Crossed Lovers. In fact, I wasn't many chapters into the book before I had suspended disbelief and become submerged in the weird and wonderful world of the ufologists. Richard's dogged determination to find Marie is the basis for the plot and we feel his frustration and powerlessness with each fresh dead end he encounters.
See a Problem?
At times I wanted to shout out loud at our hero to pull himself together; at other times I was impressed by his single minded, obsessive mission to solve the mystery of Marie's disappearance. I'd recommend this book to anyone who wants to try something different and enjoys a fast paced adventure. Thank you to the author for the advance review copy. Mar 18, Christine rated it it was ok. Marie vanishes and her boyfriend goes on the hunt for her.
Marie is an obsessive believer in aliens, Richard is not. Richard's search takes him to Brighton and the States, as he follows her tracks. He encounters cult groups and bizarre alien sex photos en route to the truth. I really wanted to like this book, but it never hooked me as a reader and the ending felt flat. The story is a romance, with a combination of the X-Files mixed with The Following. If you are familiar with both series, you pro Marie vanishes and her boyfriend goes on the hunt for her.
If you are familiar with both series, you probably won't get anything new from this book. I didn't take to the lead character, Richard. I found him rather annoying and soppy. His girlfriend dumped him and her cat, and he doesn't even get angry about it. He just didn't seem that believable to me. I was more interested in Marie and her view of the world. I think the themes of aliens and ufology, together with cults are fascinating. In this case, it just didn't seem to come together to work for me.

This book was an accidental re-read of sorts for me. Last year, I read about up to the Portland episode before I got fed up and quit.
That whole section of the book is nonsensical and completely unnecessary. As testament to how forgettable this novel was, I didn't even remember how much I disliked it I have a love-hate relationship with Mr. As testament to how forgettable this novel was, I didn't even remember how much I disliked it until I was well into the second reading. This time, I finished the book and found its quasi-philosophical plot boring and again, superfluous.
On its face, the book is about a guy obsessed with his summer fling, so tacking on a couple of meandering chapters as a means of justifying a deeper meaning was unconvincing. There are no discussion topics on this book yet. I write psychological thrillers.
