The Secrets of La Salette and the End Times
My Most Holy Father, your holy blessing to one of your sheep. Grenoble, July 3, Includes scans of envelope and letter. The entire secret is written in the simple diction of a peasant boy. The interpretation of the secret is far from simple, however. Assuming that all that was prophesied should have occurred by the year , we should be able to match the events in the secret with actual history.
The extinction of real faith in three quarters of the French has certainly happened by now, though it is practically impossible to fix the date when that occurred.

Practically all the great English-language contributions to the defense of the faith come from this period. After all the foregoing, a great peace will last briefly, until a monster disturbs it. The above is the entire content of the secret revealed to Maximin. In , a more elaborate apocalypse was published in his name, but Maximin vehemently disavowed the authenticity of this in , as well as other prophecies attributed to him.
To this day, many such embellishments are widely circulated and inaccurately attributed to Maximin. The most common false secret contains ten parts sometimes the last three are omitted , and is most misleading because it also contains elements of the authentic secret, which may have been leaked by Maximin or a church official.
It was also recovered from the Vatican archives in , and reads as follows:. Mon enfant, vous ne direz pas ce que je viens de vous dire. If, when you say to the people what I have said to you so far, and what I will still ask you to say, if, after that, they do not convert, if they do not do penance, and they do not cease working on Sunday, and if they continue to blaspheme the Holy Name of God , in a word, if the face of the earth does not change, God will be avenged against the people ungrateful and slave of the demon.
My Son will make his power manifest! Paris, this city soiled by all kinds of crimes, will perish infallibly. Marseilles will be destroyed in a little time. When these things arrive, the disorder will be complete on the earth, the world will be given up to its impious passions. The pope will be persecuted from all sides, they will shoot at him, they will want to put him to death, but no one will be able to do it, the Vicar of God will triumph again this time.
The priests and the Sisters, and the true servants of my Son will be persecuted, and several will die for the faith of Jesus Christ. A famine will reign at the same time. After all these will have arrived, many will recognize the hand of God on them, they will convert, and do penance for their sins. A great king will go up on the throne, and will reign a few years.
Religion will re-flourish and spread all over the world, and there will be a great abundance, the world, glad not to be lacking nothing, will fall again in its disorders, will give up God, and will be prone to its criminal passions. Lastly, hell will reign on earth.
It will be then that the Antichrist will be born of a Sister, but woe to her! Many will believe in him, because he will claim to have come from heaven, woe to those who will believe in him! That time is not far away, twice 50 years will not go by. My child, you will not say what I have just said to you. You will not say it to anybody, you will not say if you must say it one day, you will not say what that it concerns , finally you will say nothing anymore until I tell you to say it!
I pray to Our Holy Father the Pope to give me his holy blessing.
2. Maximin’s Secret
Includes scans of envelope and letter front and reverse. The secret message contains the detailed consequences of failure to adhere to the public message of penance and piety. The judgments against Paris and Marseilles may be found in some form in actual history. The Siege of Paris was followed by widespread destruction in the city, during which much of its historical heritage was lost, culminating in the short-lived revolutionary commune of She corrected the first version, written a few days earlier, in order to clarify that the judgments against Paris and Marseilles were not simultaneous, but completely distinct events.
This scrupulous distinction proves to have been with merit, as Marseilles did not receive its chastisement until World War II, when the occupying Germans systematically destroyed the old industrial sector and port of Marseilles in Waves of anticlerical persecution persisted through the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries throughout the continent.
The only famine that occurred in Europe after the Irish Potato Famine ended was that in the Netherlands and other parts of Nazi-occupied Europe in The people repent of their evils after the time of wrath has ended, as perhaps evidenced by the revival of moral and religious conservatism in the s. A period of moral revival and material prosperity continues through the s and early s, though not of course to the exclusion of the perennial moral and material problems that plague mankind.
Yet it is this selfsame material prosperity that tempts mankind to abandon religion and morality, returning to its worst inclinations. The last element of the prophecy is a prediction that the Antichrist will be born of a nun and be worshipped as a heavenly figure. Since far more than a hundred years have passed, we must conclude either that the birth of the Antichrist was intended, in which case he lives today, or, more soberly, that this final calamity has been deferred to a time known only to the Father, consistent with Christian revelation on such matters. One hundred years after the La Salette apparition brings us to By that time, the great political and religious upheavals of the modern era had all been realized, culminating in World War II.
There are obviously many other viable interpretations of these secrets, and some may be unimpressed with their correspondence to the facts of history. As with all private revelations, we can at best have a human faith in the veracity of these prophecies, and Catholics are free to believe or disbelieve according to their inclinations and standards of plausibility. Unfortunately, Melanie was not content to let her prophetic legacy remain in the Vatican archives. Although her personal conduct was generally exemplary, she later found it difficult to comply with cloistered life, and was heavily influenced by lurid apocalyptic writings, as well as less than scrupulous advisors who wished to coax the secret out of her.
Finally, in , she released a greatly expanded version of the secret, including new interpretations of the true secret as well as completely new revelations unmentioned in the version. All these new embellishments were indiscriminately ascribed to Our Lady of La Salette, resulting in an apocalyptic tract many times longer than the authentic secret submitted to the Pope in After receiving approval from Card. The controversial line known to all who are familiar with the secret and reported in many works on Catholic prophecy, even those available before the death of Pope Pius XII, appears towards the end of the La Salette secret: Yet heathen Rome will disappear.
Yet it is clear from reading the decisions of Rome that the faithful have been forbidden to read and comment on the La Salette secret. So do any of us dare defy these condemnations? When hundreds of thousands over the past plus years already have read the various versions of the secret published by others, it seems foolish to think that its circulation could be stopped, for even demands and impassioned pleadings have no effect on Traditionalists.
1. The Public Message
One source reports that publication of the secret under some 28 imprimaturs, with and without the commentary so often confused with the secret itself, were available to the public at the end of the 19 th century. And in all reality, the purpose for the condemnations can be seen to have ceased, since what the secret warns against has already occurred. We read in Deut. Thou shalt have this sign: Whatever that same prophet fortelleth in the name of the Lord, and it cometh not to pass: All but a small portion of what the La Salette Secret Melanie revealed, all that she said — in public defense of the Secret, in her private correspondence — only confirms the reality we face today, and only the truly blind refuse to see it.

Those things yet unfulfilled are just that — they may well be fulfilled in the near future or perhaps not at all. This does not change the tenor of the message, according to Rev. Brigid realized herself that at times she retouched her revelations, the better to explain them; these added explanations are not always free from errors.
It is acknowledged today that the scribes who wrote the revelations of Ven. Yet really the only major event that has not come to pass that Melanie predicted is the chastisement of three days, and most certainly she is only one of many to warn of this and describe the peace that follows. Holy Scripture and the continual teachings of the magisterium confirm nearly all the rest, and to refuse to believe Divine Revelation and the interpretations of approved Catholic theologians who comment upon it is to reject the teachings of the Church.
For those La Salette naysayers who lack any sort of authority over the faithful, yet who threaten that to read the secret is to invite excommunication and commit mortal sin, there is a simple answer: The symbolism hidden beneath the Fatima apparitions also suggests some sort of cosmic event. To fail to give La Salette credence based on the fact that the chastisement has not yet occurred and because certain errors were made in the prediction for reasons stated above is not enough to discredit the message.
In the book edited by John J. Dirvin explains, France was torn by upheavals and revolutions beginning in , only a week after the first apparition, and continuing until the final revolution in This time Satan suppressed it altogether, and the contents of the Third Secret were never disclosed. In later writings, Lucia informed her readers that the Third Secret could be found in Apocalypse, chapters This is practically a confirmation of La Salette, for it is in these chapters that we find the heart of the La Salette Secret.
If they can be believed, some NO church officials confirm that they were permitted to view the secret, and that this unofficial version contains it in part. To deny that the fulfillment of so many warnings by a host of seers is to deny the reality of what we have seen and experienced. Culleton and Holy Scripture, prophecy fulfilled passes the test of authenticity. We cannot change the fact that many have read this secret and believe it. Nor can we prevent the greater part of them from speculating about it and discussing it. Pius X wrote, in his encyclical Pascendi: Anyone who follows this rule has no cause to fear.
Thomas Aquinas tells us human faith is an opinion strengthened by proofs, or certitude, which requires that the intellect firmly adhere to a given object. The Lourdes apparitions are commemorated with an official feast of the Church, which cannot be wrongly assigned; the Church cannot err in such things.
Once again, these papal acts are normative acts and decisions. Pope Benedict XIV writes: Because the Church, when She truly was the Church has deemed them credible, we have no reason to doubt that they are credible, and every reason to believe they are worthy of belief.

If we dissect this phrase it soon becomes apparent that it is in no way contradictory of Catholic dogma, as many pretend. The Cardinal Manning work mentioned above is proof of this.

Rome cannot here be interpreted as the Holy See itself. This only follows the definition of antichrist given in the Catholic Encyclopedia — a king reigning during an interregnum. Roncalli was never validly elected, as proved on the betrayedCatholics site. If these men reigned at all they reigned only as kings pontifex maximus , as in the time of the Caesars of Vatican City, which is its own state per the Lateran treaty.
But no heretic or even suspect heretic could ever become a true pope. This phrase of the message does NOT insinuate in any possible way that a true pope could ever BE Antichrist; it clearly states that whenever he reigns, no faith — i. Those who cannot see this are only intent on twisting the words for their own nefarious purposes. And there is little doubt that what Sr.
It was the resurgence of this old heresy of the Protestants, no doubt, that Benedict XV was so anxious to suppress — the claim that the pope was or could become Antichrist. The fulfillment of what was predicted in the secret had not, after all, become clear in his day. This already has been accomplished spiritually, and remains only to be accomplished physically. The apostasy of the city of Rome from the Vicar of Christ, and its destruction by Antichrist, may be thoughts so new to many Catholics that I think it well to recite the text of theologians of the greatest repute.
Commenting on the 18 th chapter of the Apocalypse, he says: It shall cast out the Christian Pontiff, and the faithful who adhere to him. We cannot very well deny what we see with our very eyes. If the secret is discussed or quoted to confirm what is also predicted in many other Church-approved private prophecies, we make no apologies.
