A Promise to Keep (Hawkins Family Book 3)

They just always make me smile! I'd love a book for Derek or even the twins just so we can keep this family going!

Jul 18, Elizabeth Bennet rated it it was amazing. I fell in love with Greg and Shannon in a Hero to Keep. From what I can see the Hawkins brothers are all keepers. I haven't read Flin's story but with this one Hayden has made a promise to his brother Ian before he died. Ian got cancer and he convinced himself he'd never make it. Ronni showed tough love and he pushed her away and shut her out. She was trying to be strong for not just him but their son too. Hayden was close to Ian and Ronni. He envied the relationship they shared and secretly crushed on her.

When his brother spends the last two weeks gripping to life Hayden becomes absorbed with hate at the missing Ronni. The whole family abandons her but when Nick Ian and Ronni's son gets himself into trouble the only way to save his future is to invite Hayden back into their world. I admired Ronni's strength and how she holds on to a thread with not just Nick and a family who hates her but she has remarried.

So many layers make up this story from rebuilding past friendships to battling insecurity. Ronni's husband has portrayed stepfather to Nick and now he is left in a vegetative state. It didn't bother me. There are a couple reasons why. Ronni isn't in love with Scott anymore Ronni's husband and it is obligation and guilt that holds her there. Hayden has never let any woman close to a real relationship passed a 30 day trial. I really liked that the author did not let hate ad resentment absorb the family but allowed Nick to be placed first and what was best for him. They also were quick to realize their faults and let things go.

It wasn't as powerful as Greg and Shannon's story but still an enjoyable story. Jul 11, Pam rated it it was amazing.

A Promise to Keep: Hawkins Family Book 3 is by Susan Gable. This third book in the series of the Hawkins Family is definitely an emotional one. Susan has a knack for portraying honest emotion in her writing. She has taken a situation where a veteran is in a permanent vegetative state and his wife, who had asked him for a divorce due to his cheating, is continuing to take care of him because he is her husband.

Such dedication to obligation, a little guilt, and even some love says a lot about the A Promise to Keep: Such dedication to obligation, a little guilt, and even some love says a lot about the woman. However, does this mean her life is over? Ronni Mangano is trying to raise her son, Nick, alone since his Father had died. For thirteen years, the only communication between them was only what was necessary for Nick to remain close to the Hawkins family. Even after her marriage to Scott Mangano, the Hawkins family kept close to Nick.

Has she done the right thing? Hayden heeds her call for help for Nick. When Ronni calls, he goes to help but makes it clear it is for Nick not her. He is surprised at the change in her, the laughing funny girl who married Ian is gone. A ghost of herself is standing in front of him. He knows he needs to work with her to help Nick. Can he do that? The book is an emotional rollercoaster but is really fun to read. Oct 25, Karen Harper rated it it was amazing. I was certainly cheering her from the sidelines, although there were times when I wanted to spill her secrets, that is, when I finally found out what they were.

I was in my happy place as her words took me on an emotional journey with the Hawkins family. Not only did I get to catch up with the Hawkins family, but I was able to get to know Hayden. By using our website you agree to our use of cookies.

Charlie, being older than Tommo, had always protected and looked out for his younger brother. Also, he and Molly become closer as they are both older than Tommo, while Tommo begins to be left out. Later, it is revealed that Molly and Charlie were secretly seeing each other and that Molly had become pregnant with Charlie's baby. Tommo became extremely heartbroken after the couple rushed to get married a short time later in the village church before Tommo and Charlie were forced to go to Belgium to fight in World War I.

All through this time, Tommo recorded his feelings in the novel. The rest of the story describes the brothers' experiences of the war: During a charge of the German lines, Charlie disobeys a direct order from Sergeant Hanley and stays with Tommo while he is injured on No-man's-land. As a result, Charlie is accused of cowardice and given a court martial. The book's chapters count down to dawn when Charlie will be executed.

At dawn, Charlie is marched before the firing squad, where he dies happily singing their favourite childhood song, Oranges and Lemons. Tommo ends the story in the present tense with Charlie's execution and the promise of looking after Charlie and Molly's new baby, "Little Tommo".
