Golf Ball Buddies
The Polara golf ball has an asymmetric pattern of dimples. There are six rows of deeper dimples on either side of the equator. At each pole, the dimples are shallower. This creates an airflow that tends to correct sidespin, and reorient the ball toward straighter flight. Does it have a significant effect on where the ball ends up?

A Cure for Hooks and Slices? Introduction The dimples on the surface of a golf ball are there for a reason. The dimpled surface of a golf ball decreases the drag force on the ball as it flies through the air Scott, Comparison of the airflow over a smooth ball vs. In the case of the smooth ball top , the boundary layer has a laminar flow pattern which separates from the surface early, creating a wide turbulent wake behind the ball. In the case of the dimpled ball, there is a turbulent boundary layer which separates from the surface later, creating a narrower turbulent wake behind the ball.
The narrower wake results in less drag. Thus, given the same initial launch force, the dimpled ball travels further than the smooth ball Scott, Spinning golf ball in a wind tunnel. The smoke lines show the pattern of airflow over a golf ball with backspin.

The air moves faster over the top of the ball, and more slowly over the bottom of the ball. The flow field is curved downward, indicating that the spinning ball is generating lift F. Virtually every object that you see around you has passed through the hands of a mechanical engineer. Consequently, their skills are in demand to design millions of different products in almost every type of industry. Aerospace Engineer Humans have always longed to fly and to make other things fly, both through the air and into outer space—aerospace engineers are the people that make those dreams come true.
They design, build, and test vehicles like airplanes, helicopters, balloons, rockets, missiles, satellites, and spacecraft. Do you have a good eye for beauty, balance, and form? How would you like to see your designs show up in toy stores?

Or in a sporting goods store? Or at a car dealer? Commercial and industrial designers create the shape and form of every type of manufactured good that you can think of—from toys, sporting goods, and medical equipment to high technology products, furniture, toothbrushes, and toasters. They design the form of new products that are as beautiful and pleasing to look at as they are functional. Variations Rather than purchasing a Polara golf ball, you could make your own asymmetric dimple pattern by increasing the depth of some of the dimples on a regular golf ball.
You could also try filling, or partially filling, some of the dimples to create a smoother surface. You'll need to use a material that will stay put even when the ball is whacked repeatedly with a golf club. You shouldn't need to remove or add a lot of material to get an effect—just a few thousandths of an inch should be enough Veilleux and Simonds, You could do it by hand with a drill bit of appropriate size, or you could use a drill press with a mechanism for setting the maximum travel wear safety goggles, adult supervision required.
This experimental approach will save you some money the Polara golf balls are expensive , and give you the flexibility to explore different patterns. For example, do you think you could make a dimple pattern that would increase the amount of hook or slice? This procedure assumes that you will make your shots on an empty football field.
The clubs were selected to be appropriate for this distance. The inside of a golf ball is soft and easy to carve. When you cut into one, it might be blue, yellow, lavender To make the cut to remove the outer shell, buy two short pieces of PVC. They fit tightly to two sides of the golf ball, leaving an opening for the coping saw blade recommended or one can use a band saw. You can have a lot of fun experimenting on your own, creating faces or animals or art designs in the golf ball.
After you make a few faces, you might like to create a few torsos like you see in the picture. Basswood is good for carving because it has very little Grain and is not too hard of a wood. Cut a piece 2" X 2" X 3". Draw a semicircle with your pencil, in the middle of the top of the wood, and carve it out to be a seat for the golf ball. Round the edges of the wood into a jacket form. Use your pencil to draw the details of a collar and tie, or a bow, or straps and buttons, whatever kind of torso you choose.
Carve in those details and be sure to add a little paint. The most satisfying painting comes from a "Wash. Several coats of this "wash" is often more attractive than a layer of paint, and it is also easier to cover the whole piece and lead from one color to the neighboring color.

Quite a few carvers have a collection of Golf Ball Buddies. When you see people looking for golf balls along a course, there is a good chance they aren't using them to play golf! The NSK machines have proven their durability through twenty-plus years of use in the tool and die industry, and as a tool for woodcarvers We are also offering the proven line of RAM machines. They may not have all the patents of the NSK, but they are used by many happy carvers. Based on the number of questions we receive, no other area of carving is as frustrating to the new power carvers as trying to figure which tool to use where.
