Easy to read, equally easy to understand, this is a no nonsense presentation of lessons learned from someone who has given a good portion of their life energy to understanding coffee. But, as always, the grind and brew must be given their due or the labor in roast will be of nothing to boast. I'm a new home roaster and to me this is a must read. By Max Mustermann on Oct 30, In my opinion this book is very applicable also for hobby roasters. It is not written too complicate also not the Chemistry part and with only few phrases, which are harder to understand for foreign mother language readers. What I needed was access to internet, for some translations.

The author was not meantioning the bean growing and processing in detail - thanks for this - and comes fast enough to the main part of his messages. Not too much and not too less information. After reading I do really know much more about cooking beans, but few questions are open for me I think this are very individual questions, which will be answered by getting further roasting experience. My only complain goes in the direction of darker roasts, which I personally prefere I can't confirm losing bean individual character by darker roasts, but I can imagine it partially, compared to lighter roasts.
The writer prefers much more the modern lighter roasts and has no fable for italian roasts, which are of course far away of his example at page 12 8- not a big disadvantage for this book - the reader has only to adapt rule III or the temperature a little bit. A pretty great companion for anyone interested in roasting. It was good to me for understanding about coffee roasting! Very informative book, a quick read full of helpful info. The most comprehensive book on roasting I've found.
