I read a few months ago about there being no crime in Soweto in Johannesburg! The poster was told they could go anywhere in Soweto, day or night. I was furious as it's very irresponsible advice. Your post should be used as a sticky, it's a very useful one.

Enjoy your stay in our lovely land! If someone was visiting Houston, I would advise them of certain areas to avoid due to crime, but that doesn't mean that Houston is a crime-ridden city that is unsafe. I have the same issue with people not being honest about crime in certain areas of their cities.
