Understandably, the vast majority are about love, and some of the poems were frankly yawn-inducing, but others were surprisingly bold statements, especially given their time frames. Franco Sacchetti's "Passando con pensier per un boschetto" -- Short, easy-to-read lines, with a simple story of maidens gathering flowers. But what I really love is the end, when the narrator is so transfixed watching the maidens play and then flee from the rainstorm "Chi'io non mi'avidi, e tutto mi bagnai" -- That I forgot myself and I got completely wet.
Giacomo Leopardi's "Le quiete dopo la tempesta" -- Such a beautiful description of the joy of rural life torn apart by the narrator's both bitter and appreciative admiration of how Nature can distract us from the pains of life. Giuseppe Ungaretti -- I actually loved all of his poems. Short, terse lines with the perfect words chosen each time to make for sharp, meaningful imagery.

While "Tu ti spezzasti" is a crystal clear slice of a poet's grief at the death of his young son, and a tearful celebration of how the child was just starting to explore the world. This is a solid primer for Italian poetry. If I had any complaints, I would have liked to have seen more than just one female poet, just for a little more variety.
But otherwise this was a sufficiently rich exploration of the co-evolution of Italy and her poets. One person found this helpful. I do not believe that poetry can be translated successfully.

So the only way to get to know the poetry of another language is through the dual-language format, which allows the reader to "hear" how the words might sing to the ear. A poem like "La poggia nel pineto" could not be enjoyed in a context translation, so dependent it is upon the rhythm of the words. This book fulfills the need. Background info on the poets is included. Kindle Edition Verified Purchase.

Nice intro to both the language facing pages feature Italian on the left, English on the right and the poetic spirit of Italy Dante's there with an intro, plus 20 other giants spanning seven centuries of Italian poetry. Nicely priced as well, thanks to inexpensive binding and paper. I use this format when I can as preparation for a visit to foreign country I have rediscovered poets that now sound much more beautiful than they did when I was in school.
The English translations are also very good and faithful to the spirit of the verses. This is one of the few books that I feel very comfortable with five stars.

The poetry is beautiful. Many other books are ready to be donated after I finish them. This one will remain a permanent part of my library to be read over and over. With this book you can have fun learning Italian by reading poetry instead of endless hours practicing dumb drills that dont seem to work. By actually reading Italian and English at the same time with something that is actually interesting, you learn a lot faster. After you have practiced, you can go back and try to read the story in Italian only and see how much you can understand.
I found that I learned quite a bit more this way versus the traditional annoying drills way. I like the spread of works covering 7 centuries; the book is attractive, inviting exploration, there are brief biographies of the 21 poets, and its a great way to explore the Italian language.
