Jun 08, These are the prettiest covers I've ever seen, and I would love to collect them all! Jul 30, Aug 24, I absolutely love the Penguin English Library covers and it would be nice to collect them all! Also the Penguin classic clothbound hardcover editions are absolutley beautiful! They're just so pretty and collectable! I love the clothbounds too. Do have a few that I got as presents though and they're absolutely gorgeous. Feb 23, Thanks for a complete list! I've been looking for one.
Now I just need to buy them all. May 05, Jun 06, Jun 13, Sep 14, Sep 18, Oct 21, Jan 19, I don't understand why they would - that's one of the things people liked about the editions. Now it's just going to be a pain to buy the ones w Wells, and the cover has a velvet touch, is this the new texture or the old texture? Because I love it! Feb 01, Now it's just going to be a pain to b Feb 08, I literally want ALL of these! Feb 21, Are these mass market size?
Apr 07, Can someone else share their experience buying these editions nowadays? I just received Heart of darkness and the material of the cover is awful and doesn't have a velvet texture whatsoever.

Apr 08, I have 6 of them! They are not mass market size, they're regular trade paper back, the cover is matte and feels like thicker paper, and the inside paper feels and looks very similar to mass market pulp paper in texture and color. Yeah the covers are not velvety at all.

Jul 26, The cover on this feels like recycled paper. Sep 08, I have 6 of these and though I love the designs very much, I don't intend to collect all because there are too many that I don't want to read. I wish they had printed titles from more authors like Verne, Flaubert etc. Yes the new covers are not velvet textured like the initial ones and even the colour pigment is a little different from the initial prints.
Some people have complained of typos but I didn't find any in the copies I got, other than one or two in the whole book. Buying the pale covers isn't such a good idea as they get dirty really soon.
Penguin also has notebooks in some of the designs if you are interested in buying!! Jan 20, How many are these?

I've read that they are only but this list has Mar 07, Pls tell the lovely folks at Penguin to give Mysteries of Udolpho a chance, and maybe more Ann Radcliffe. I would love too see it in this edition. Mar 23, Will read Villette soon. Torn between this and the clothbound edition, also Everyman's library looks attractive. How's the paper quality of these editions so far?

I wonder how the paper compares to the black-spine penguin classics? Is it as grey and silky? I find it difficult choosing what to read next. So I am working my way down this list, as well as the other stuff I'm reading. May 16, Jun 02, I wonder how the paper compares to It's actually why I buy these editions. The font is very legible and the paper is thick enough that the words don't bleed through a major problem in the clothbound editions, IMO.
Jun 24, Having known the story already behind this take, obviously watching cartoons and other adaptations of it.
Knowing what the overall secret of it all did somewhat take the fun out of reading it. All I will say is that I am glad it was a shirt book and the only real gripping chapter in the book was the last where Jekyll describes his struggle with Hyde. It is the same struggle we all face everyday. The decision whether to be good or evil. I did like the example given that it it was to compare the struggle with th that of an alcoholic and deciding not to have the bottle.

Still it is worth the read. My only wish is that we could have had more stories about the mishaps the Mr Hyde got himself into. A definite should-read, with no real excuse at 55 pages. There's a recurring and underlying theme in a lot of Victorian fiction. British Imperialism is at it's height, and the gravity of domestic and global Industrialization, with all it's consequences is becoming readily apparent.
People of a certain class have had their paradigm jolted to reveal a shift from moral self-inquiry to an almost existential inquiry of mans place in the world at all.

There's a sense beyond traditional Catholic guilt, a kind of collective grief, silently mouthing "What have we done!? It does go further, offering the reader a foray into personal psychological and spiritual vivisection while soothing us with an elegant yet gripping style so unique even for the time; but what makes this book so great is that despite the Victorian bent towards verbose, long-winded paragraphs about what type of day it was, it does it all in around 55 pages. Great story, well told about the dangers of drugs and how letting your dark side shine isn't always healthy?
Want to delve into a state of Quasi-Philosophical existentialism, but are pressed for time and would rather read the brochure? Do they even have this in schools as required reading anymore, I wonder?
