Would you like to tell us about a lower price? In , the estimable S J Rozan invited me to contribute a story to Bronx Noir, an anthology she'd been commissioned to edit for Akashic Books. As she'd been obliging enough to write a story for my own Manhattan Noir, I felt honor-bound to return the favor. Although she seemed quite capable of standing the heat, I figured it was nevertheless time for her to get out of the Kitchen, so I sent her up to the Riverdale section of the Bronx.
My own familiarity with Riverdale was largely limited to those several months when I would ride the 1 train to the last stop at nd Street and Broadway, where I would meet a married lady from Westchester for an amorous dalliance in a motel with hourly rates. None of this is really anything y'all need to know, but the memory is dear to me, and I seem compelled to share it. I took the subway again and had another look at Riverdale, and then sent my heroine there for her second adventure. The story appeared in Bronx Noir in , and unwittingly launched Kit Tolliver she was yet to reveal her name as a series character.
Ultimately, of course, the stories about her coalesced into a book, and you can cut to the chase by buying the lot in Getting Off. Read more Read less. Books In This Series 12 Books.

The story of Kit Tolliver, however, is one hundred percent original. I won't go into details here obviously as the story is only a short one but the ending borders on the brilliant side of the fence. Which should not surprise the reader, given the heritage and talent of the author.
I must admit to having grown rather rather fond of Kit by book's end, up to a rather sharp point, of course.
But this story is outstanding. I'm of The story of a young woman being picked up in a bar is not a new one. I'm off to buy the others in the series!

Feb 06, Michael Waterman rated it really liked it. Kim Tolliver is hot blooded and cold hearted. A killer to die for! LB is a poet among mystery writers. His terse prose makes the reader's imagination work overtime. This creates a level of reader involvement few mystery authors have achieved. LB's characters crawl or leap from the page aiming straight for the readers' subconscious. They leave an aftertaste in the brain!

Jan 24, Wanda rated it it was ok. Story started out with a description of a woman who you think is probably gong to be a victim of crime. She is in a bar and gets picked up by a guy and they go back to his place. The story then takes a turn. A murder happens and several others are discussed but the story ends there. It is a little strange that there wasn't more to the story. Block is wonderful in the short story format. He leads you in so gently and let's you believe you know what's going on before--Bam! You tell yourself that you knew it was coming, but you didn't know when.
You're lying, but it makes you feel better.

This one was perfectly crafted and smooth. I can think of no reason to rate it anything but five star. I'm a big fan of Lawrence Block having read most of his novels. This is just a very short Kit Tolivier story that was going for free on Kindle which won't take you long to read and will pass a very enjoyable 10 to 15 minutes.
Has whetted my appetite for more of her stories which I think there are another two, on Kindle. Yet another wonderful short story by Lawrence Block. Perfectly crafted little story that leads you down a certain path only to whap you across the chops with the truth of what is really happening. This is a crime story, sexy, smart, and elegant and was a pleasure to spend a few minutes with. Sep 26, Steve rated it really liked it Shelves: Another excellent short story from this master of suspense.
