Victoria is sexy assistant-in-training and love interest with a little genetics problem she manages to hide from Hugo. I think writers will enjoy this as they will understand some inside jokes specific to their profession. I read it in one sitting, could not put it down. Buchanan's novel is rollickingly funny "pun noir" with tongue-in-cheek jokes for lovers of literary humor. Original in concept, he satirizes the popular paranormal genre, for his vampires and werewolves are concerned with great literary concepts. He savages those who are concerned with grammar and style and demonstrates that literature will survive all types of criticism through humor and good writing.

Behind the In jokes is a plea for literature of every genre to be read and enjoyed. This is a very funny novel about a noir private eye detective Hugo Rongg and his vampire girlfriend -- very tongue in cheek. The concept of combining noir and paranormal seems unlikely, and yet it works on so many levels that I found myself going back and rereading paragraphs just for the chuckle.

The characters are well rounded and endearing and Buchanan puts them in some very creative and compelling situations. This is summer reading at its best. They make a great team solving crazy South Florida crimes -- even though Victoria has not yet shared with Hugo that she is a vampire.

Buck Buchanan pokes great fun at the detective and vampire genres but he is never mean. This actually is a laugh-out-loud read. It's hillarious when read quickly. I repeat - laugh-out-loud! Hugo is the typical tough, suave, "take everything in stride" detective private eye writer with a voice worthy of Marlow, despite driving a Yugo.
