There is a continuing backstory that ties the books together. The plot complexities are quite believable, but occasionally just a bit hard to follow. Nevertheless everything unfolds naturally with credible detail. You could probably plot Drake's movements on an Ordnance Survey map of Wales with little difficulty. The intricate workings of the North Welsh Police Dept. His books are an entertaining read especially if you like to relax and enter a different though demanding world.

Plots are intricate and only solved by dogged police work with no magic wand available except DNA tests and lengthy video footage review.

The Welsh mountains are described by the author as one who enjoys the great outdoors of North Wales. One person found this helpful. DCI Ian Drake is a very interesting character. No superhuman detective skills here; instead he is a hard-worker who is good at his job, but still insecure about office politics. Both his work and home lives are impacted by his problems with OCD. I like that this is set in Wales, but be prepared for words that you can't pronounce.

I had never read any of the Inspector Drake novels,and my first impression of Inspector Drake was that he was a failing obsessive who was likely unable to solve a crime much less maintain a normal life. I was wrong on both counts. I watched him sink to the bottom, and found myself incredulously rooting for him as he not only solves a very complex case, but begins to work himself out of his neurosis.

At the end he seems to have some hope. This series is pretty ho hum for me at this point The characters are uninteresting and the main character is totally not appealing to me on any level.

He has a case of OCD which dominates to the point of annoyance. The writing seems labored and at times it feels as if I've read a lot of words which add up to much of nothing said. I started skimming the book just to get to the end since it was not holding my attention to savor the words. Whoever compared this series to Stieg Larsson was way off the mark.
