Seedtime on the Cumberland

The subduing of the land by the early Anglo settlers made their claim justified.

In one of her sections on Indians, she makes this bias clear. In each section, she describes what the people wore, ate and drank, what the houses looked like, what kinds of furniture and utensils they had, and what life on the farm would have looked like. She also gives the prices of items and provides comparisons so the reader can gauge true cost of living.

Using household inventories, she compares the possessions of families in different social classes.

In addition to looking at the foods of families of varying classes, she also compares to the foods and drinks found in taverns and restaurants. She also provides cooking instructions and recipes. Reading Seedtime on the Cumberland feels less like perusing an academic text and more like visiting a living history museum.
