Books by Shirlee Kalstone. Start with blades that are for longer hair so you don't get too aggressive until you figure this out.
Spend a lot of time handling your pets and playing with their feet on a regular basis so they will stand still for you. My dogs looked great, but this is quite an endeavor to take on. Must love your dogs to put this time in and spend the time to do it right and to be careful to not hurt them, otherwise go to a professional groomer. I've been using this reference book for 10 years now and always go back to different points in the book. My first poodle was a standard and now I've got a mini.
Sometimes I'll refer to the section on blades or maybe a different cut for the season. The book always has something to offer. Some say it's a bit too comprehensive and yes it is but that's what I love about this book. The binding and pages have held up nicely. Kindle Edition Verified Purchase.

I love this book. I am new to poodles but have full confidence that this book will help me enter the world of grooming my own dogs. I love that the book includes all of the styles. I wanted to add a review however, to let people know that in addition to this book YouTube has owner grooming and professional groomer videos.
I feel both are useful in their own way. I wanted more than just watching the videos, because I feel most of them utilize model dogs who are great at being groomed. I am happy to have the videos because I could see real life examples of grooming at home without professional tables. Between the book and videos, I am well on my way I will edit my rating accordingly after putting the reading And watching into real life practice with my darling pups.
This oversized book covers everything you need to know to clip and groom a poodle your self. Part 2 has 7 chapters of basic clipping instructions, from feet to ears. Part 3 covers clipping for the show ring, including three AKC-recognized show clips. This woman knows her stuff! Years ago I owned a mini poodle that I clipped myself, and I plan to buy a Standard sized poodle--this book will be my go-to reference. Growing up we owned shorthaired mutts that required minimal upkeep.
They walked around the yard like they were lost and slept on the back porch the rest of the time. We probably washed them twice a year.

We could go on vacation for a few weeks and they would be fine as long as they had food and water. My dad didn't allow dogs in the house and didn't like spending money on them, so owning a dog like a poodle was simply out of the question. Years later I decided I wanted to get a smart house dog. So I did some research and decided on a poodle mainly because of its intelligence and non-shedding ability.
I made the right choice - but of course - didn't know anything about grooming- something all poodle owners should have knowledge of even if they don't do the grooming themselves because a poodle is a totally different breed of dog. My poodle's not a show dog nor could he ever be one, but I don't want him for that anyway. I don't have any interest in some things in this book such as the special cuts section.
However, I still found this grooming book to be very informative and helpful.
It's an easy read and very detailed in every aspect of grooming. The book starts by giving a brief background on poodle origin and then goes into the different kinds of cuts and their origins.

It then teaches three primary skills: There are plenty of pictures to help you along the way. Another thing the book teaches is that properly grooming a poodle is not just washing and cutting hair. I noticed once that my dog was scooting around on his butt a lot as though it itched.
