This shift is the reason why English spelling and pronunciation never seem to match. It was considered very fashionable to speak in the new way and even back then, people wanted to be cool! He is still so famous today because he changed our language a lot, mostly by using old words with new meanings and changing nouns to verbs to adjectives. He was a very clever writer and is responsible for making English even more complicated! As the printing press became more popular in the 16th century, spelling became standardised - there was now a correct way to spell something which meant all other ways were incorrect.
