Tales of the Nun & Dragon (Bushy Tales Book 1)
The Ballad of Gilrain by Sarah Cawkwell — Gilrain the knight and his trusty manservant, Therin, meet a troublesome dragon.
Tales of the Nun & Dragon
This first story features a nice blend of humor and action to start things off. In addition you can download the entire ballad as an MP3 from the Fox Spirit website. I like extra touches like that. Incident at Wearing Abbey by Mark West - A lone walker out in the woods and is attacked by a strange creature. When he wakes he finds himself in Wearing Abbey where he meets a group of nuns who seem to know a lot more than they are letting on.
Journey to Blackfire Keep by Colin F Barnes — A purple skinned Lizard man called named Billtong, a daring airship chase and a lost dragon civilization.
Follow the Umwelt & Ren Warom
Action packed, fast paced fantasy is always a winner with me. Journey to Blackfire Keep feels like that. Nil Desperandum by Ren Warom - Malk meets a nun, actually that maybe the mother of all under exaggerations, Malk meets the worst nun ever. Things go downhill from there. The unstoppable force meets the immovable object. Proper old school horror, please excuse the pun, and extra points for referencing the famous play.
This was one of my favourite tales from the entire collection. The Bells of Freedom by Cat Connor - A lost journal, a supernatural detective with a guardian angel called Horlicks and a suspicious acting nun. The set-up just seems to good to leave as is. Almost verging into the realms of nunsploitation this slightly campy, slightly surreal fantasy tale worked well. The back and forth dialogue between the two main characters were a real treat. I admit this was an unexpected, but thoroughly welcome, surprise to find some science fiction pop up in the mix.
The Last Hunt by Karen Davies - Morgan Keel and his band of pleasingly disreputable mercenaries are on a dragon hunt when they meet the redoubtable Sister Yenza. I loved the nods toward the various characters backstories that are hinted at but never fully revealed. There are a whole host of other tales, some vivid artwork and even some striking poetry, still left for you to discover.
I was spoiled for choice with all the differing, iconoclastic interpretations of the nun and dragon theme.

There is definitely something here for every taste whether your looking for traditional fantasy, horror, science fiction or dark comedy. Well worth checking out. Sep 09, Tony rated it it was amazing. The eyes of the Dragon do it for me in a big way. Although I read an early review copy I have seen some of the interior art by Keiran Walsh and they also look pretty darn nice.
I usually find with anthologies that there are a few strong stories, a few weak ones and that that I just do not like at all. The only part I did not enjoy was the single poem. Unfortunately this was the case with this one.

This is not a short anthology there must be about k words so the value for money is pretty good. As I journeyed through the various flavours of fantasy I got to see both Nuns and Dragons in many different lights. There are a lot of kick arse martial Nuns in this book. There are also elements of other genres in this anthology.
I liked the steampunkesque I know it is not a real word but I like it shotgun and sorcery story and the voyeuristic sci-fi apocalypse story was a complete change of pace and style. I do have to mention the final story by Karen Davies though as it finishes the anthology so perfectly. It is nice to see an ending that flips things around and makes you think. This is a great anthology. There are a lot of featured authors with some great books coming out soon Pat Kelleher has a book that I am desperate to read due out soon which makes this a great way to discover new obsessions for your reading pile.
Even though I have a review ebook version of this book I will be buying a hard copy to put on my bookcase.
Sep 13, Victoria Hooper rated it really liked it Shelves: Tales of the Nun and Dragon , edited by Adele Wearing, is an anthology of short stories and one poem by a range of different fantasy and horror writers, some well-known, some new names. There are a lot of stories inside, all with their own unique interpretation of the nun and dragon theme. Nuns, dragons, nuns verses dragons, nuns who are dragons, nun on dragon action yep, that happens , pubs called The Nun and Dragon Each author puts a different spin on the subject matter.
For some, dragons are the traditional monsters of medieval stories. In others they are the satanic beasts of Christian thought. In some stories they are misunderstood or sympathetic characters, wise old creatures of a time long gone, or else magical, dangerous beings from another realm. Some of the stories are set in a pure fantasy land; others take place in our past, a few in the present, and even one in the future.
The Bushy Tales take a theme and explore it from every genre and every interpretation across a collection of stories from new and well known authors. There is humour, horror and everything in between in these pages. Join us for tales of faeries at the bottom of the garden, foxes falling foul of their own nature, battles fought in the night where human lives hang in the balance.
Not all faeries are good, not all foxes are hunted. Grant, Coming Home by Cat Connor. Tales of the Mouse and Minotaur explores the adventure of mice and rats and twists on greek mythology. It also sees the return of Gilrain. A few leaves, abandoned on the floor by previous travellers, skipped gleefully in the updraught, dancing joyfully around the feet of the newcomers. He wore a plain, unadorned tabard that had once been white but which had absorbed any number of unlikely stains.
He was young; perhaps in his early twenties, and he had a pleasing countenance framed by a mess of dark curls, plastered to his head by the rain from outside.

All the fab info on this terrific anthology. Some reviews have had very kind words about my story and Alastair Stuart, who writes the introduction, was also kind enough to mention it.
Tales of the Nun & Dragon by Adele Wearing
If you read Nil Desperandum, you may recognise the essence of this opening in the weft of my tale:. But I also wanted to channel every low life piece of sarky scum Steve Buscemi has ever played, because he is the master of sardonic, greasy wit. The story itself borrows more from dark fairy tale as much as it does from Desperados.
I wanted it to be like a fairy tale in a spaghetti western bandito b-movie. I think I managed to achieve that somewhat.
