Missionaries Are Human Too

Going abroad has neither changed our weak and sinful natures nor given us new talents.

But of course, missionaries arrive at their new mission field as human as ever, but with new fears, stress-inducers, and frustrations. They need our prayers. They need us to be realistic about the real trials they face. They need us to be compassionate when they make mistakes or need extra help or fail to meet goals and deadlines.

These missionaries are still part of the body of Christ, and we need to graciously share in their hard labor as much as we can. Jesus is the only Savior, the only perfect human being, the only perfect missionary. He calls us to play an important role in his mission to redeem and restore, but accepting that calling does not necessitate perfection or superhuman capabilities. Be sure to remember that as you follow him to the ends of the earth. Hey Mark, you hit it on the mark pun intended.

As one of your fellow students and current cross cultural missionary this is great. Unrealistic expectations not only leave dissapointments but also can send a missionary home real fast.

The Gospel is Good News filled with contagious joy, for it contains and offers new life: He is the Way who invites us to follow him with confidence and courage. In following Jesus as our Way , we experience Truth and receive his Life , which is fullness of communion with God the Father in the power of the Holy Spirit. That life sets us free from every kind of selfishness, and is a source of creativity in love.

God the Father desires this existential transformation of his sons and daughters, a transformation that finds expression in worship in spirit and truth cf. The preaching of the Gospel thus becomes a vital and effective word that accomplishes what it proclaims cf.

Jesus Christ, who constantly takes flesh in every human situation cf. Many movements throughout the world inspire high ideals or ways to live a meaningful life. Through the mission of the Church, Jesus Christ himself continues to evangelize and act; her mission thus makes present in history the kairos , the favourable time of salvation. Through the proclamation of the Gospel, the risen Jesus becomes our contemporary, so that those who welcome him with faith and love can experience the transforming power of his Spirit, who makes humanity and creation fruitful, even as the rain does with the earth.

Where all seems to be dead, signs of the resurrection suddenly spring up. The Gospel is a Person who continually offers himself and constantly invites those who receive him with humble and religious faith to share his life by an effective participation in the paschal mystery of his death and resurrection.

It is also not an uncommon site at the fancy restaurants in the city to walk in, in the middle of the day, and see gray-haired European men seated at tables, eating with and talking to, Malagasy girls in their late teens and early 20's. Unfortunately the end result of these rendezvous is quite plain to see. Pray for those who persecute you. Jesus said to love your enemies, pray for those who persecute you. Let's take that seriously: This is a sinful industry that is destroying lives.

The people doing it have destroyed lives as well and they are in need of grace and salvation. We need to be on our knees praying. They had a chance to interview many of the young men and learned that virtually all of them were ashamed of what they were doing and desire to get out. Cambodians know that being fluent in English is a valuable asset in earning a living wage.
