I guess I'll chuck in some old ones. True, in each book James makes certain choices that inevitably make life harder, but for someone who has been following the series it seemed as if James mentally took a few steps backward. Almost as if he hadn't been through anything like this before. Chasing a man with a hat through some woods, being chased through the streets, or hopping on and off a train, were presented as some of the most exciting and thrilling events of his life.

To anyone who has read any of the other four books, each of those things should be everyday occurrences by now. If you've read the other four books I would suggest this one so that you can close out the larger story line. If not, read the other books because they are very good. I did not like the new reader, but I pushed on with the book.

Higson does great things with plot and a believable creation of the enigmatic James Bond.

As James grows up, so do his stories. I would put this book as one for slightly older readers than the first few books. An enjoyable story and characters, but some deeper subjects of betrayal and loyalty. This series remains a great read for teens who love adventure.

I really enjoyed this audio version of the last Young Bond by Charlie Higson. I almost gave up again at exactly the same point I did when reading this many years ago, but I'm so glad I didn't. This was a great adventure for Bond with a thrilling plot, great villians and of course a love interest. Nathaniel Parker did a superb job as the narrator at all the different characters, nationalities, male and female, young and old.

I enjoyed this so much on audio that I would love to listen to the earli I really enjoyed this audio version of the last Young Bond by Charlie Higson. The character is really developing and the stories are getting better all the time. This one had some great plot twists and set pieces and I can't wait to read the next one. It was night time, and he began to hear a muffled scream, which he later found out belonged to a Graf Von Schlick. He then attends a party to celebrate the life of the boy he saved, where he's awarded a watch, meets the prince of Wales and once again, meets Von Schlick. A few days later, he's sent back to Eton where he meets the new head of his house, Theo Bentinck, a cruel bully, and his house's new maid Roan Power, a very beautiful Scottish 17 year old. Who he finds himself falling in love with even though it makes Theo mad.

The decide to meet in the park where he also meets, Dandy, Roan's friend, and helps out the princesses Elizabeth and Mary, not knowing who they are. On the fourth of June, the King comes to Eton, and Bond finds a familiar face in the crowd, that of General Sedova, Babushka, immediately regretting not killing her when he had the chance, he avoided her.

A set of unexpected turn of events occur, in which Dandy ties him to a bomb he's using to kill the king with, doing so in a way to make it seem like it was Bond's fault so he can start a communist revolution. He manages to get away and defuse the bomb, save the King with a hidden knife. He tried to go after Dandy, who tries to kill him with his knife, only to be saved by the man who had been following him all this time. A team of men came to escort the dead body and james to a safe house, where he learns the truth about his presence at Eton from his Professor Mr Merriot.

It turns out that Mr. Merriot was a part of MI6 and that they had been keeping an eye on him. And know it was his turn to return the favor and get information from Roan since she had been part of the whole sceme, and report to Mr Merriot.

Back at Eton, Roan reveals to him that they had been working for a Communist agent back in Portugal. Bond decides to save here and runs away with her using his car, which he had bought earlier in the year, and with the help of his friend Perry, he manages to gather up enough money to be able to flee to Europe, where his skiing instructor had offered him to come back one day. There Roan betrays Bond and leads him to Dr.

Perseus Friend, who Bond knew from his first adventure, and thought was dead. However, Bond manages to escape, and free Roan, however, M16 having been involved in the whole thing showed up at the mansion in which they were held, and both sides starting shooting at each other, Bond was protected, however, Roan was shot and proceeded to die later that day int he middle of the woods with Bond. In my opinion, this is a great book, that includes, politics, spies, and even a 14 year old, as he departs on a journey that will forever change his life.

Definitely a great book, easy read. Great way to end the series. This book is recommended to teenagers, and kids who want to action and mystery books. Dec 07, Amy rated it it was ok. James Bond is an idiot. As if the last book wasn't bad enough While I've never been a Bond movies fan, I thoroughy enjoyed the first three books. A James Bond Adventure was a literary flop, and unfortunetely, this book tends to follow the latter, rather than its predecessors. I struggled between giving it one or two stars for most of the book.

Everything was kind of coincidental and cliche. The characers James Bond is an idiot. The characers were at least a little deeper than in Hurricane Gold, but the plot irritated me. The "non-stop adventure" was somehow lacking. He spends a great many pages bemoaning life, his future, his love. Every time the plot seemed to pick up Higson tries to incorporate themes in the plot like "living in the real world" but it really kind of fails.

Also, unlike most of the other books, the "bad guys" were more obvious.

Generally whining about his life, his future, his love. All the bad guys apparently think they can take major advantage of James, he appears to let them, and of course kicks their butt. But there is something lacking in it from the previous books. There is still the action In an attempt to "grow James up", Higson is simply making him whiny and rather cold hearted. His previous "allies" also drove me insane. I used to be quite fond of the Eton chaps.

Pritpal in particular usually proves to be an amusing fellow, but I quite wanted to punch him and Tommy Chong by the ned of the book. They just kind of drop of the pages of the book. Speaking of dropping off, the character Miles, who plays a huge part in the beginning He is a useful tool of introduction, and apparently nothing more.

In fact, the only Eton boy worth is salt - who apparently doesn't got ot Eton anymore - is Perry Mandeville and he shows up and ships out in maybe a chapter. In fact so does Amy. I really wonder why they bothered re-introducing her at all. She just kinda shows up, swooons around James a bit, and goes. It really is too bad. Emotions are so cliche, expected. Roan deciding Communism isn't the answer. The plot takes you from points C to D, it ties up all the characters I hope this isn't a sign as to what future books will be like.

Now Young Bond itself is an absolutely incredible amalgamation of stories which intrigue, excite and frighten the reader by telling the tales of an extraordinary British teenager and his adventures occurring in places ranging from Eton College, in Windsor, to Mexico, Italy and the Caribbean.

In all the books, Higson 'By Royal Command' by Charlie Higson is the last exempting the supplementary novels and graphic books in a fantastic series about the life of a teen James Bond called 'Young Bond'. In all the books, Higson weaves an assortment of techniques and imagery into the stories to make it come alive and ensure there isn't one dull moment in the story, no matter what's happening.

Tiny spoilers ahead In this book, it is no different; you cannot fault the brilliance of Higson's literature. However, compared to the fifth book's predecessors, it seems a little lacking. Firstly, the flirty vibe and romance between James and Roan appears to be slightly over the top. Although it might accurately represent James's feelings for Roan which should be extremely difficult to represent , it seems out of place in his world of action, adventure and mischief, especially when they become really intimate in a short space of time and James is suddenly devastated when Roan the woman who attempted to kill him a few chapters back betrays his trust after acting isolated and cold towards him.

Additionally, the book itself has traces of the captivating aspects from the rest of the series, but they seem diminished and not at all as effective as the lustrous storytelling Charlie Higson provides to you when beginning the series. Nevertheless, my views on this are probably quite biased in some wierd, subconscious sort of way, so don't take my word for it and read the amazing series!

It is also written to introduce the world's most famous spy to a preteen or teen audience. Higson still keeps the foundation of a great Bond novel intact.

There is fast cars and a Bond girl in every book. Since there an e no M scene Higson replaces that with the Danger Society scene. That is a thrill seeking group that James and his school boy friends. By Royal Command is by far the pinnacle of this series.

A familiar villain of the series makes a shocking return. Plus we get to see the first time in Bond's life where he uses the famous "Bond, James Bond" line. The can make your heart skip a beat. The question that will linger throughout this book to any veteran fan is how will a young untrained Bond get away from the epic villain.

Higson plays this tune like a Grammy award winning composer. The result is By Royal Command is the best of all five in this series. Higson expanded on three paragraphs that Fleming gives us in one novel and gave us the back story we never knew we wanted.

It was like the master spy was sitting across the table telling these stories to Higson. By Royal Command is a five star conclusion to this segment of 's life. IFP has said the intend to write more Young Bond adventures I hope they either wait until Higson is ready to pick up his pen again or can leave well enough alone! The main character is James Bond and he is given a mission by the Royal Command in the freezing Alpes. However it didn't happen as expected, there he was under surveillance in every move he makes. Their he had a girl called Roan by his side that was beautiful and he liked. An other person who was with James Bond's team was Dandy. Dandy wanted to kill him to make a Communist Revolution, after a while James Bond noticed that and attacks Dandy as the king's killer had knife he attacks James Bond then suddenly he is saved by someone.

As the writer specified earlier James is under surveillance in every move he makes, so the person that followed him came and saved him and shoots Dandy! James was devastated when he died but he tried to kill the king and James. The saviour says that he works for M16 and that Dandy and Roan work for a communist cell based in Portugal. He also affirms that he has been following them way back in Australia. When they arrived Roan had to betray Bond and the mission is over.

However he had been greeted by the king for saving his life and in the end he had to go to college. So as one can see that is how Bond got through all of this with Roan and Dandy! Jan 18, Tyler Neff added it. It definitely the most violent, gruesome book in the series as well.

Things that happen in the beginning tie to things that'll happen in the last part of the book. Much like the Alex Rider series. In this book, the 5th book, James Bond is returning from Mexico, and wants to be a regular schoolboy. He doesn't want to be involved in violence anymore. But, everything at Eton changed when he got back, there's a new owner, and a new maid that everyone says is very pretty. She's only 16, though. Her name is Roan and she becomes very friendly with James. Once James gets back, he takes skiing lessons.

But, he gets let behind and a dangerous mountain, with another skiing mate. They go on a dangerous adventure, and it seemed like he would die. Later on in the book, he has to deal with Communists, and eventually with Nazis. Watch how James makes it out in this one. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes adventure and spy books. Anyone who has read the Alex Rider series would definitely like the is book. Honestly this book may just be the best action book that I've read this year. This book is the last book in the series, and it is about the young James Bond, and it takes place near the time of World War II.

When the Nazis are in power, and are about to declare war, and the Soviets are also in power, recruiting young Communists. In Eton, James Bond wishes to just live a normal life now, despite the fact that he had just saved a classmate during their skiing trip in Switzerland. There is a new b Honestly this book may just be the best action book that I've read this year. There is a new beautiful maid, Roan Powers. James Bond becomes friends with her, and she introduces her friend, Dandy.

On the fourth of June, James discovers Dandy's plan to assassinate the king, and bring communism over to England. James stops Dandy, only to have Dandy killed. Now, the MI5 wants to question Roan. So James goes on the run with Roan. I started reading this book because I am a fan of this series. And I was a bit sad that this would be the last book. I finished this book because honestly, I just couldn't stop. I would recommend this book to Rachel and Aloka, because they too are fans of this series, and I was the first one to read this book.

The book may make spying seem a little bit high profile, as deduced in the original James Bond universe, but Young Bond keeps the same charisma, humour, suspense and action in every page. The idea of a story having a James Bond as a youth and having exciting and deadly adventures is not the most original storyline, as there are many youth spy and adventure books out there. Howe I think that Young Bond: By Royal Command stands out from the rest of the crowd with its amazing segments of action.

Young Bond has true potential keep going on for a little bit more longer. Charlie Higson has done a really good job at writing this book. If there is not a better James Bond related series out there, then this series of books is the next best choice for some good reads. It is one of the best spy series out there and I'm very glad that it was recommended to me.

I will most certainly recommend it for youths aged around It is most definitely a must read for this age group. However, I'm sure that some adults or younger children would enjoy this book too. Now I just randomly had this book in my house because I don't remember getting it and that is the kind of thing that calls the hero to adventure so I decided to read it.

I then later found out I got it at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles because of the sticker on the back. I also didn't realize it was part of a series until halfway through, but you don't really need to read them in order because they are each a stand alone adventure. Adventure it was because the action scenes were great and thril Now I just randomly had this book in my house because I don't remember getting it and that is the kind of thing that calls the hero to adventure so I decided to read it.

Adventure it was because the action scenes were great and thrilling and I should expect that because its James Bond why wouldn't it be? If you like James Bond you should clearly read this book. If you're into action then this is the book for you! I thought the characters were alright but not enough detail was put into the extras and the book only focused on few.

Don't fret because I saw some development in the end of the book but all in all the book was action packed and fun but I don't think I'll be reading the rest but it was a fun Bond adventure. Higson was educated at Sevenoaks School and at the University of East Anglia where his brother has taught since and is now a professor of film studies where he met Paul Whitehouse, David Cummings and Terry Edwards. Higson, Cummings and Edwards formed the band The Higsons of which Higson was the lead singer from to They released two singles on the Specials' 2-Tone label. Higson th Higson was educated at Sevenoaks School and at the University of East Anglia where his brother has taught since and is now a professor of film studies where he met Paul Whitehouse, David Cummings and Terry Edwards.

Higson then became a plasterer before he turned to writing for Harry Enfield with Paul Whitehouse and performing comedy. He worked with Whitehouse on the radio comedy Down the Line and is to work with him again on a television project, designed to be a spoof of celebrity travel programmes. Higson does an extraordinary job weaving the history of the time organically into the story and none of it feels forced. I highly recommend the series not just for anyone interested in James Bond but for anyone who loves history and enjoys a good historically based adventure story.
