Starcrossed tome 1 (Pocket Jeunesse) (French Edition)
We also find out that Lyric and her mother are not what they seem, you pretty much find that out at the beginning of the book. I love how this first book ended at a good place. Well, relatively good at any rate. I'm excited for the next book, I think I said that already: When you think of the beach at Coney Island, what do you think of? Strong, fierce and trapped in a guarded camp on shore, the Alpha have arrived. Do they mean harm or are they running themselves to survive? Have humans fouled the waters so badly?

The once peaceful tourist attraction is now the epicenter of human fear, distrust and violence as once again, the Lady in the Harbor is made a mockery of because someone was different. The Alpha are being offered a life on land from the Federal government, but the masses disagree and a military state has been proclaimed.
Schools become their own special brand of warzone and one girl is asked to tutor the great Prince of these people. What can she do about it? Lyric has secrets and they are deadly, but when lives are on the line, she may no choice, but to reveal them. She alone, can make the difference, she alone can prevent the deaths of millions, or so, she was led to believe, until Undertow by young adult author, Michael Buckley will set the fantasy world on fire with this one! This is not the Hatfields and McCoys, this is survival, this is learning to accept the differences in others, this is learning to trust and act on the words on the Statute of Liberty and few are brave enough to take the chance.
From page one, the wonder starts and we are plunged into the deep end of a tale being told at the speed of sound in rich detail and equally taut tension. Buckley has brought each character to life and added a dimension that defies being able to forget them long after the story is over. Without a wasted word, I was rocketed on a journey filled with secrets, a budding romance and the collision of two worlds. Undertow - Book 1 Publication Date: May 5, Publisher: YA Fantasy Print Length: It worked out great this time around.
We all hear about aliens and about how vast space is, how there are so many believers out there convinced that one day Earth will be invaded by them. But how many stop and think the same about Earth's very own oceans? Because the fact of the matter is, Humans still haven't been able to explore the 4. Because the fact of the matter is, Humans still haven't been able to explore the deepest parts of the oceans. There is still so much out there undiscovered. Well, Michael Buckley has taken that and built one hell of a story with that premise.
Initially, you would think mermaids, but the Alpha are fierce warriors. The world's initial wonder quickly turn into paranoia and fear of the unknown. Coney Island is transformed into a military zone. Cut to present times. Lyric's high school is about to become the first school to open it's doors to the Alpha. Many are horrified by this and start to take matters into their own hands. There are protesters outside the school doors every morning, some of them very violent. By this point, there is so much hate towards the Alpha and anyone who is thought to sympathize with them.
Now 17, Lyric is recruited into helping the crown prince, Fathom, adjust to life as an American teenager. While she initially refuses, they form an unlikely friendship, which develops into something more. All the mistrust and violence against the Alpha steadily increase, but they're not the worst thing hiding beneath the shores. There is something much more terrifying than the Alpha. This book, to me, was incredible and very original. It touched on some tough subjects, the main ones being abuse and racism. Buckley's writing just completely drew me in.
I felt as if I was in the crowd outside the doors of Hylan High, watching all the chaos ensue with the protesters and all the police and even military attempting to keep order and it painted a scary picture. I've gotta wonder if this is how it was when segregation came to an end in America, if people then were as hateful as they were in this novel. Buckley handled these subjects wonderfully, in my opinion. I can't wait to see where Buckley goes with this series next.
Feb 25, pearl. Not gonna lie, I wasn't expecting to love this as much as I did! One of my most favorite reads of so far! Edited to include full review. I loved absolutely everything about Undertow! The plot was quite unique and unlike anything I'd ever read before. The blurb describes the book as a blend of the movie District 9 and the book The Outsiders ; but I say it's more District 9 mixed with the TV show Star-Cross Not gonna lie, I wasn't expecting to love this as much as I did!
I could not put it down. What I Enjoyed The world-building. Imagining the Alpha warriors taking over the beaches of Coney Island and creating a city of tents kind of scared me. I mean, seriously, the Alpha prince has sharp, knife-like objects coming out of his arms. It's a tad bit threatening. I could clearly envision the panic, chaos, and hate that filled the military zone and I think it was an accurate portrayal of how most humans would react if this book were to ever come true.
Oh, yes, I grew to adore the Alpha prince -- stabby knives on arms and all. I enjoyed his moments with Lyric as she attempted to teach him to read. He cracked me up because he took everything so literal.

My favorite moment was when they read Where the Wild Things Are and Fathom seemed quite perturbed by it, even after Lyric explained the island of monsters wasn't actually real. This was the most interesting part of the book for me. This is the part where you realize the oceanic warriors are, in some ways, a lot like us.
They have religion, schooling, science, etc. It's hard not to sympathize with them when you find out why they've taken residence on Coney Island. TL;DR One of my favorite reads of Scary ocean warriors called Alphas take over Coney Island. Humans and Alphas hate each other. Alpha kids participate in a pilot program to attend human high school. Alphas are not so bad after all. Fathom, the Alpha prince, is a hunk. The ending has me dying for book two. Pearl AsteriskPearl's Book Blog A lot is going on in Michael Buckley's newest novel - prejudice, bullying, gang warfare, violence, social injustice, school integration, riots, domestic violence, life in a police state, some romance.
Oh, and an aquatic race of people climb out of the ocean, with unclear motives as to why they have appeared. While this sounds like too much for one novel to hold, Michael Buckley pulls it off. The characters make believable choices, even when in situations far from realistic. The story does not get A lot is going on in Michael Buckley's newest novel - prejudice, bullying, gang warfare, violence, social injustice, school integration, riots, domestic violence, life in a police state, some romance. The story does not get high-jacked by romance one my personal complaints with much of YA lit , but does have several characters in romantic relationships healthy and otherwise.
There is more romance in the book description than the first half of the novel. This is also a very timely story. High school teachers wishing to include themes of civil unrest and race riots may find discussing this novel to be a good starting point. It is often much easier to discuss fiction than fact, especially when events are still so fresh.
There is so much more to say about this novel, but I worry about spoiling any surprises. It was very enjoyable and intriguing! The writing in this story was so engrossing I almost forgot how far out the concept was. Undertow kept me turning pages deep into the night. Lyric is a sixteen year old in New York living near Coney Island. Lyric is assigned the Alpha prince at school to help him assimilate.
Helping an Alpha might get her killed as it has so many others. Lyric is an atypical teenager who is living through a special time in history. The author depicts most humans as being scared and responding to the Alphas very badly. There are groups of people that want them gone and will stop at nothing to make it very bad for those who try to make friends with them.
Lyric is curious, but no more than anyone would be. The rules are much different for her, she has a dangerous secret. Lyric is an honest female lead with such a good heart. Her human love interest was an honest look at teenage lust. She is smart enough to know that he just wants her for one thing. Lyric is unique in the YA genre in that her parents are right there, loving her and giving her strength. Her family is complete and her she loves her friends fiercely. I think her support system helps her to make good choices and it has helped her to become a solid friend for Bex.
"+b.related_title+"
Bex is her best friend and is living in a very broken home. Lyric has some special secret, of course, as it is a YA book and that is all the rage. Her specialness did not take away from the fact that this story is completely unique. The concept is really solid and the story moves at a great pace. The Alphas in this book are described as beautiful and terrible, they are frightening.
I loved the interactions between Lyric and Fathom, the Alpha prince. He is not a prince I would envision. He is more of a pawn for his evil father, and there are some scenes in this story that show the lengths Fathom goes to prove his loyalty. The ugliness of the humans around Lyric and the real threat of death makes this a gripping tale. I could barely put it down.
La Déferlante
There was much to love about this story. The fantastical creatures, their weapons, and their culture. I was really intrigued reading this story. I was so swept up in the fantasy that I was actually relieved at the ending to find this is only the first book. I think fans of YA are going to love this concept and they are going to love Lyric. I didn't have any expectations going into Undertow, except hoping for an entertaining read, so I was plesantly surprised how much I loved it. I was sucked right into this story that felt otherworldly yet also like it could be happening today. I definitely recommend this book.
Lyric is an interesting character to follow. She is strong yet has been hiding-in-plain-sight for years due to the situation her family is in. She has a wild side, yet has been forced to be responsible. She is loving and car I didn't have any expectations going into Undertow, except hoping for an entertaining read, so I was plesantly surprised how much I loved it. She is loving and caring with her best friend, yet has had a history of not being cared for and respected by boys, one in particular.
She is being pushed and pulled in so many directions. Yet when push comes to shove, she's the girl you want in your corner. I think the struggle and inner-turmoil Lyric deals with throughout the book was well conveyed. Actually, this book is full of confict and turmoil. This is no simple aliens versus humans debacle. This is layer upon layer of prejudice, assumptions, animosity. It's not just alien versus human. The scary part is the human against human fighting and hatred. There are many parallels that can be seen between this fictional world and the world we live in.
I also loved how these Alpha were developed. Like humanity and its varying cultures and nationalities, the Alpha have their own variety. I loved getting to know them in bits and pieces. Their whole society is fascinating, and I enjoyed the thought that went into it. Of course, Fathom himself was a captivating addition to the storyline and I loved that he wasn't just some one-dimensional "prince," which is what I feared initially. I feel like beyond this, I don't want to get too much into the story. I loved reading through chapter after chapter.
Between the build-up of conflict going on in the city and school of all the anti-Alphas, getting to know the Alphas alongside Lyric, feeling Lyric's anxiety about her family and her friends, wanting to uncover the questions and mysteries still in question around Lyric and her city, and the history and current problems the Alphas themselves are facing, I was completely entertained. There was never a dull moment and the story was paced really well.
I confess, I may have even shed a tear or two. I'm definitely looking forward to finding out where the story goes next. OMG I loved this book! Why must you make me wait almost an entire year to find out what happens next?! Lyric Walker is a "wild thing", a very rebellious teen. That is, until 3 years ago, when she finds out about her family secret. Now she does everything possible to be as "normal" as possible. She is a model student, she even changes her style so as not to stand out. She will do anything to just blend in and not bring any attention to herself. Things are changing now.
Coney Island is now The Zone. There are walls all around, to keep who is in, in, and everyone else out. They came out of the ocean and are now living on the beach.
Call them what you will, "mermaid", "fish head", but they are Alpha, an entirely new species no one knew existed until now. There are a lot of humans who want the Alpha gone. If only they knew, the Alpha are not what they need to fear. Much worse is coming. There is action, suspense, and even an unlikely romance. This book has it all. It's a great story that I could picture so well. This I one of those books that I'm still going to be thinking about awhile from now. I can not wait to read the next book in this series! That is a fantastic story with such an intriguing approach and world building.
I adore lyric and her wonderful friends a I love how much she loves her bet friend and would do anything for her. There is a lot going on in this book that makes this story very rich and detailed. Military overtake Domestic abuse Tight, wonderful family ties Friendship A new race both terrifying and beautiful Romance could have been more War! And so much more. The only thing that completely annoyed me was the authors That is a fantastic story with such an intriguing approach and world building.
The only thing that completely annoyed me was the authors abused use of the word "cries" or "cry". Lyric and everyone else was constantly crying, but no in the "tear shedding" kind of way but more in a "outraged loud speaking" king of way. I wish she would have used another word, as for me it made the characters kind of whiny instead of strong and determined. I'm not a native speaking so that's might be the reason why the use of this particular word struck me so wrong. Lately, I've been feeling sick to death of paranormal YA fiction, but I had heard excellent things about this book so I decided to take a chanceand I am so, so happy I did.
This book is seriously amazing. It's incredibly smart, oddly sweet in places and has enough suspense to steal your breath away. It's full of things to discuss like how we treat people that are different but is never obnoxious or preachy. Lyric is my new favorite heroine, by the way.
She's everything I love: And oh sweet God, Fathom. I can't even talk about them as a couple. This entire book is perfect. There are no other words. I need everyone to read it, so that I can talk about it with The only problem is I am absolutely desperate for the second book, which isn't out until next February.
COYER scavenger hunt item This and all my other reviews are originally posted on my blog un Conventional Bookviews. Captivating and highly entertaining. I hadn't quite read anything like this book before. When lyric Walker sees the Arrival of the Alpha, or first men, her life will change forever. The Alpha are forced to go to school with the kids of Coney Island, or as the people like to call it, The Zone.
The first day for the Alpha is a disaster, nobody wants them, they call them names, and everybody wants them to leave. The Zone has become a police infested area, guards everywhere, and if you do 17 year old Lyric Walker lives with her mom and dad on the sandy beaches of Coney Island, New York. The Zone has become a police infested area, guards everywhere, and if you do something bad, you are arrested and taken to jail. Lyric is Forced to meet with the Alpha prince Fathom, one hour everyday. As days fly by Lyric slowly starts to fall in love with Fathom, but she knows that their love is very dangerous.
Everyday Lyric looks more and more to meeting with Fathom. As Lyric uncovers more and more about herself and her mom, Lyric realizes that the Alpha are their last hope, because something much bigger is coming. I liked that the author told the book in the perspective of Lyric, and that he uses a lot of loaded language. This book is really good, if you like suspense, mystery, action, or sad books you will really like this book.
This book is a lot like Harry Potter because it feels as if you are in the book right next to the characters. View all 6 comments. What really sold me on it was that it was set at Coney Island. So I gave it a go. My first impression is that it was rather scattered. I find it a rather cheap tactic. Denying me information for the sake of page-turning just annoys me. Once I was given the necessary information to root myself into the story things finally leveled out and I was able to just read what was going on. I love the way Coney Island was described. I love Coney in all its scraggy, rundown glory.
Even before all the Alpha came onto the beach Coney was a hole with a gang problem, crappy schools, and dangerous streets. Drug deals and murders and vagrants were all a part of normal life for her. Enter the Alpha, make Coney basically a quarantine zone and all of those issues get amplified. It was a rough place and Buckley made no qualms about describing it in all of its rancid glory. Still, I loved it. Nothing can make me not love Coney. Despite her ridiculous name I really liked Lyric as a character. The nondescript girl with too much to hide. Maybe a bit more than average.
The she had to pull once the Alpha came subdued her greatly and you can tell it killed her to do that, living in constant fear of discovery. It wore on her and she showed it, a girl so desperate for normalcy. I loved her friends, too: He tore my heart a little. I liked what Buckley did with the sea creature lore here.
These were brutal, war-driven beings that felt themselves above humans but cowed thanks to something even worse than them. I felt the relationship that built between Fathom and Lyric was a bit forced. If there was more than that I think I would have liked the book less. Do I want to own a copy? I definitely want to read the next in the series but owning is a commitment. Thoughts on the Overall Book: It's been a long time since I read any of Michael Buckley's books, but I did enjoy the first couple Sister's Grimm books that I read and really wanted to see how he did with YA.
I was not disappointed, in fact, I think this is definitely one of the best books that have come out this year so far.
Chroniques du marais qui pue Tome 1
I do really like the cover, it makes me curious to see what the story is about. I'll admit that at first I wasn't really sure if I would connect with Lyric.
She wasn't a bad character, it was just that she seemed a little je ne sais quoi. As the story progressed, however, she grew into a wonderful heroine, strong yet still seeming to be on the unassuming side, without an attitude, and had the ability to push past her fears and inner demons to do what needed to be done. My favorite character was Bex, though. She was just an awesome best friend and I think we all hope to have a Bex.
Just the fact that she was one of those people who could always smile and and always bounce back even when her life was utter rubbish to put it mildly made me love her all the more. Shadow was also an awesome guy friend and I really liked him too. I really enjoyed the Alpha characters too. Fathom was actually really surprising, because I was expecting your typical YA brooding hero, but he was actually more of the kind of quirky, quiet and awkward type.
He did have anger management issues but it was because he was thrown into a new life and he was a prince, but he was kind of adorable too.
