New Van Morrison in December! Very, very strange cover artwork. Thanks for supporting SDE and the shop! As you say, they very limited because they were cutting orders from various retailers. I am glad that I spotted this as I have now ordered it here and cancelled my Amazon order as I too would like to support you when I can.
Was the fact that you had these for sale shown somewhere or it a case of keep checking the Shop tab. There is a facebook page if you use facebook https: The set includes her live albums. Neil Young has just confirmed on his Archives website that next archival release will be the Crazy Horse world tour acoustic compilation Songs For Judy. It is named after some audience banter regarding Judy Garland who Neil imagines is sitting in the front row of a show.
At the time there were a number of unreleased songs and there are many bootlegs in circulation. Interestingly , Neill says the compilation was picked by Bernstein and journalist turned movie director Cameron Crowe, a big NY fan. The release date is November 30 and Campaigner can be streamed from his site now. There is an image of the album art showing a sketch of , presumably, Garland, flicking through some papers. Something from Neil Young himself regarding the long awaited nine years and counting!
Bearing in mind there had been rumours that Neil had scrapped the idea of a physical set replaced by high-res streaming, he replied: Blu Ray is no longer viable for economic reasons. NYA can give you what the blu ray had though by including High Res audio. I actually bought the Blu Ray Archives 1 set mainly for the visual content. Interesting though that there is a CD package on the way. You do a grand job! He has created sleeves for CDs, both new and archive, as well as graphics for reissued videos such as Rust Never Sleeps.
I am guessing the book will be more a visual documentary along the lines of the recent Led Zeppelin release. Hide Intro Live 2. Ghost Nation Live 3. The Fall Live 5. Bed Of Thorns Live 7. Non-Prime buyers have to get them from market place sellers. Does anyone know if this is just applicable to McCartney? I checked a few other big names andcouldnt find a similar exclusion.
I know it happens for non-musical items but this is he first time I have seen it applied to music. Long long promised by the band apprently waiting on Universal and still no sign. Any chance of email to Universal Paul? Traveling Wilburys volume 1 being issued as a limited edition picture disc on 2 November. The sound of vinyl and udiscovermusic carrying photo and blurb about the album. However, both the back cover and the sleeve that contains the discs list these sixteen tracks for both 5. There is not an option on the Blu-Ray menu to select 5. But perhaps SDE could ask Universal Music whether all the materials on the Blu-ray discs other than the master album takes are intended to be available in 5.
If there are legitimate issues with the Blu-ray discs, I hope that Universal Music will provide an easy way for consumers to obtain replacements. Too bad that for a major release such as this that Universal Music gave the project to a shoddy pressing plant. Of course, the Clear vinyl release is also on its way to me. Let us know what your experiece with this boxset is. The disc will have previously unreleased John Lennon content, but no unreleased Rolling Stones content. The promo material for the new Rush box set does not mention who did the 5.
Paul, can you ask around and find out if this is a Steven Wilson mix also? I know Steven is a huge Rush fan, but he has said recently that he wants to back away from doing a lot of surround mixing for other artists as it takes time away from creating new music of his own. Either way, like the Tom Petty Live Anthology, this has skyrocketed in price on the secondary market. I just bought it on the amazon. A major disappointment for Rolling Stones fans: What a waste of plastic.
Bananarama limited edition colored vinyl coming in October. I believe a CD is included with the LP. Getting to be an expensive year. Anyone else have this issue? At last the Yuka Fujii book Like Planets is available!! A no-brainer must have for any David Sylvian collector. It interesting to see the many posts moaning, on the main news thread, about costs for particular items. If this was musical equivalency it would be, at pages, no more than, what? It shows, to me at any rate, how people do not value music any more. Thank goodness there are companies willing to produce these kind of things and there are people willing to buy them in the world of books.
As much as Amazon is damaging things, it is this cheap-as-chips attitude that is wreaking even more havoc on the world of physical music. Sylvian is art in human form. Art has a value, not just a price. More news concerning the Cherry Red group of labels. The situation was apparently a glitch in the Amazon. This situation was corrected shortly after I placed an order and was forced to omit an item. Also upcoming from Esoteric: This means substantially higher shipping charges than Amazon. Thanks for the info Phil. The worse part is not knowing which ones will be still around to buy at a later date.
New Suede Blue Hour Album released yesterday. Signed vinyl at their webstore. Signed CDs already sold out. It may not mean much to those beyond our shores but today the UK lost a genuine talent. The 3 CD version will be limited as well. Plus the 2 CD version of the new stereo mix. Rather than follow the usual album plus bonus outtakes formula , Sony is going to release something better: The group originally wanted the album to be recorded live in concert, but attempts to record the group live had not proven to be musically satisfactory, so the group recorded the music mostly in the studio, adding audience sounds to two of the studio tracks.
As I, and others, have said before your updates are always of great interest to us more mature readers with a prime interest in the 60s, Beatles, Stones, West Coast music etc. It looks like the record companies intend to try to force MQA upon the consumers. This is bad news. If consumers find this unacceptable, it will speed the demise of the CD format. Not about a release, but about packaging from Amazon. I recently received a vinyl PSB Bilingual with absolutely no protection, packaged in a wayyyyy to big box with some wrinkled paper above it.
The result is that the cover is bended on 2 corners, which looks absolutely horrible… I complained with Amazon and since it was the second package within 3 weeks that got in with damaged goods I returned the first one and got an exchange , I finally was reimbursed fully without having to send the item back I told them that going to the post office had to be during my office hours, that I did it already once a few weeks ago, and that if I had to go again, I would gladly invoice them with my missing work hour…. Maye some well-hidden option? Does anyone have tips? However a ding is a ding and it was caused by being sent in a large box without padding.
I contacted Amazon USA, recieved an apology, was told to keep the item and reimbursed in full! I have since ordered a few items from Amazon USA and they have all been perfectly packaged. Have you seen anything about the new Fall compilation coming soon. Called 58 Golden Greats and looks like an old Johnny Cash cover. Golden Greats was the original idea for the 50, album. Knowing what an influence Elvis Presley had been on MES, and the fact there is the picture of the album on the back of the Grotesque sleeve, I wrote an email to Hammonds: Get an illustrator to do the same with MES on it!
The most important thing about the collection was that it was fully endorsed by Smith himself; and he made one significant change — upping the number of fans by 45, He wanted the number to be nearer a batallion as 5, seemed too small. Shatner Claus Great Title! Iggy Pop is out on the same day. Eric Clapton also has a Xmas album out on Oct 12 — bet the Shatner one will be more interesting. Oh believe me, I completely agree and will likely be getting both the Shatner and Clapton releases. Like Yes but with Captain Kirk on vocals!
CD and Blue Vinyl. Thanks for the heads-up, that looks an amazing line-up of artists. Seems falling out with Nash and Young has done him a lot of good. The 3 previous albums have been top drawer and the single from this one Glory is pretty awesome too…. Nash and Stills should take a leaf out of his book and up the output…. Hi Paul, do you know if the Barry White album box set due soon is going to include any unreleased stuff. I always opt for standard shipping.
So there is a product cost and additional is shipping cost…. My query is that in either case will i be charged import duty when the destination country is not one of UK, US, France and Gemany…. Norway is not part of the EU so any item bought from abroad is subject to import tax. As for the charge itself, there is also a handling charge to pay on top of the duty. This can be quite high.
Hi Paul, Just wondering if you could share this with all your Aussie readers who have been missing out on your deal alerts due to geo-blocking. Amazon AU have the soon to be released Led Zep. Dave Davies to release Decade an album of lost 70s tracks, some have been finished off with vocals and extra music. Phil, thanks as ever for the excellent updates. I was just stating that there have been times over the last couple of weeks when my posts have never appeared.
I was assuming it was either a problem my end, beccause the post was not of interest or because I included a link — but I was unsure exactly why hence my recent post. I think I may have provided some fairly decent deal info over the last couple of day? Keep up the great work.
Fontana Years box set out 12 October. Four discs including the two albums for that label, plus b-sides, sessions and the promise of period rarities. Paul, I am still somewhat convinced that there is some technical problem with your forums. On the positive side, that site provides a complete tracklist. And one more thing: Hi Phil I am of a similar age 66 in fact and have similar tastes to you, so always look out for and appreciate your posts. I have been a record collector since and my first 45 and, sadly, I am something of a luddite and have yet to experience the apparent joys of blu-ray, sacd, surround sound etc.

There have been over comments published since July 31st, with lots of people reply to them. Are you saying you have an issue seeing new comments? The Michael Jackson picture disc post has 29 comments, can you see them?
Please be aware that NO comments by anyone get published immediately. There is always a time delay which can range from 10 seconds if I happen to be moderating at the time to 8 hours I have to sleep. This is because comments are manually moderated on SDE. I have been manually approving all comments as usual, so there is nothing going on.
I understood your point loud and clear…. The whole comments area of this website is getting a major overhaul very soon. This is good news. The responses to the Michael Jackson article 32 of them are indeed there, and most of my recent posts have belatedly appeared. Daryl Easlea is listed as the compiler of all of the new 3 CD Top of the Pops compilations on UMC that have been appearing over the last couple of years. In general this has been a good batch of comps including. However, there are a couple of what I consider awful mistakes on a couple of these sets, and I would really like Mr Easlea to explain what happened and if he had no control over the finished product.
Once is regrettable but doing it three times on 3 different comps including the new TOTP Reggae without someone spotting and correcting it? And this version is not just bad, it stinks. Another set has no fewer than three wrong versions on the same disc. I suppose what I should be asking is does anyone care that these are wrong, or is it just me?
If there are lots of us we might get some movement instead of the tumbleweed silence so far. Quality control and do they feel like fixing them. Is there a reason why only people in the U. Dylan was just starting to write original songs and introduce them into his shows. Even in the track bootleg, only four of the songs were original Dylan compositions. Most of the others were traditional folk songs. I doubt there was a falling out. By then, live sound equipment had become more complex.

They may come back to them, I suppose. We did those already when we were working on A Chord Too Far. They are quite easy to do and could come out any time, whereas Still and Strictly Inc will be much more of a problem as they are very long and we have to remix them from the beginning. It was apparently recorded back in the day but never released.
Assuming this is the version we know, I fail to see how it could make a relevant single for the market of Well contrarily to what some have said, this is not aimed at us fans: They know some of us will buy it for the unreleased track regardless of what else is on it, and that some of us won't because we won't buy a 2 CD set for a single song while we can easily get a free download or buy the single track on iTunes. My take is that this is just for the general public, and that the need for yet a new compilation is just a way of generating some hype while the 3 old comps are unable to do so.
And they chose the content based on whatever criteria they feel relevant for that crowd. So to be honest I couldn't care less for what is or what isn't on a GH package. It's not something I need or that I'd buy. As for the bonus cut, I'm happy to see ML out but on the other hand I already have that song so it's not like it's gonna be a big day for me to have it with a slightly superior sound quality, unless of course this is a completely different version. For one thing they wouldn't "own" anything: And I really don't see why they would be worse a distributor for those outtakes than any other label?
Yeah, WTF does that mean? No indication on what version of Nothing Compares 2 U it is either. Here's a link for amazon with the details BTW. By the way, I can't figure out how the tracklist above considering "Album Version" when there's not specification would fit on 2 CDs. Oh people have been reading into this Rolling Stone article where Susan Rogers mentions Moonbeam Levels and a Prince vocals version of Nothing Compares so that's me wishing and hoping.
If it was that version i'm sure it'd be mentioned by now though. A bit of bonus material, a third CD. Maximise revenue from a small number of die-hards. Rumor is Prince's original vocals were erased, but I could never find the source for this rumor so IDK if it's true. However, as you said urself, WB would be fools to have included this and not to brag about the package containing TWO unreleased tracks.
Alan Leeds said in an interview on Prince's Vault, that in some cases, vocals were erased from the multitracks tapes. But, I'm sure there were at least mix-downs put onto DATs and whatnot. It will be tough to sell 4EVER in these conditions. WBR has no interest on releasing that song, so what's the point? If it was to release only one unreleased song, why did they wait 7 months to releas that shit? They tried to release it but they failed to make an agreement with NPG, because they didn't want to pay for it. Proof of that is that they still can produce it.
This would have been commercially more efficient. If found that hits compilation at bol. What in the world is a b face?! Those figures are in fact pretty impressive all things considered. What sort of proof do u need as to whether Come is still in print or not, either it is or it's not, it's pretty easy to verify and it has nothing to do with its singles being included on a compilation.
Why in the world would Moonbeam Levels be on PR deluxe when it's a outtake, and when it'll already have been released on 4ever? The rest of your post is a bit obscure to me: And to be honest the tone of your post, overall, is pretty vulgar. Your posts are usually articulate and relevant IIRC but here, no offence but I'm really disappointed. As some might have stated this is a Warner's release. As far as I can see this release make people believe that Prince only made music until Why not a song of every album including a few unreleased ones.
True, it must be a thing to collect money, but will this set help them. I think the other available sets have been sold since his passing, so why anotherone? The inclusion of Moonbeam Levels excites me and makes me affraid. Well, it's not going to be the same anyway! Prince never did things that pleased all of us, so the ones running things now sure will not either. Thx for clarifying So he didn't say NC2U specifically , did he? It doesn't say "studio", only "solo", which could pretty much mean everything, including that the journalist overlooked the existence of the live cut from The Hits, and believes this is something new.
I wouldn't read too much into this. Yes you are right, perhaps I'm reading what I want to see To be fair I'd be happy with a live Prince version of the song. There are some nice live renditions out there. Not that they are better. I like the cover too - it is smug and arrogant and regal all at once - and as you said "Bad ass". This board was insanely obsessed with sales back when Prince was alive, to the point that when a new record was released you had more threads about sales and marketing strategies than about the music. Honestly, you'd have thought that this was a board for shareholders of NPG Records or something, not fans!
And indeed you'd read some fans moaning about poor marketing moves or poor sales as if their money was in jeopardy! I do not know what it says about our times, that fans of an artist will be more interested in their sales and charts position than in their music and lyrics, because it certainly wasn't a very important topic of conversation back when I became a Prince fan, or even 10 years ago on the Org, but I find it very sad.
Now that Prince is gone I wish we'd get away from those petty concerns, and get focused again on the reason why we're here: God, why in the world would we care why WB releases a fourth GH package or whether or not it'll sell?! The only thing that should matter to us is the inclusion of Moonbeam Levels, which version of it, and the inclusion of some never released on CD or digitally before 7" edits. Maybe also the whole tracklist, of what it says and what it's worth as a testimony of Prince's work for general audiences. Plus there's no way that a new set wouldn't be created.
No way would The Hits and The Very Best Of be what is represented for him, what with the kind of lackluster packaging. Plus these repackaging of hits that somebody already posted about means to me that again, he has hit the big time and mainstream again in that he is equal, or greater than, all of the other longstandng artists in the rock n roll pantheon who get their catalogue reinvested in every decsde or more.
The more he sells, the more 'justified' we are in our passion for him;, sales give concrete 'evidence' to others, less discerning than ourselves, that he is still and always has been an amazing musician; high sales volumes legitimise in the eyes of the masses our claim that he is the best artist in the world - ever! I suppose, in short, people on here just want the BEST for 'our man'. While I understand the reasoning, I do not believe it is accurate.
A GH compilation is a certain type of product for a certain type of audience. A PR remaster with bonus cuts yet another type of product for yet another type of audience. And a compilation of outtakes, or live DVD yet another This compilation is not aimed at fans. Most of what can and should be released will, and may touch a broader audience only if the music press generates some hype about it. Besides that was already the reasoning behind former discussions, i.
Prince won't or won't be able to release albums if they don't sell. Prince isn't an obscure act. His music will always sell more than most of the dozens of records that get released every week. Prince is not a comic book magazine that needs to keep sales above cancelation levels. I do not believe there is any sort of relevance in those discussions. Of course good sales of further products, those aimed at us fans, the more "niche" releases, are likely to have an encouraging impact on further niche releases. And having endless threads about it? No, it makes zero sense. Just buy the goddamn shit.
We're the only fans community in the world who's obsessed by their favorite artist's sales. I mean for those younger, new fans who are in high school, OK. Of course when u're 16 your musical tastes are a defining part of the personality u r trying to build and impose on others. And u're starving for credibility. But the great majority of this community is made of people who're above 30, if not older.
If they still need Prince to score hits to feel respected by their friends, how sad! How revealing of a lack of personality, self-confidence and affirmation at an age when you should know who you are, have people who love and respect you for exactly that around you, and shouldn't care less about what the others think. Besides, even more pathetic is the need for commercial success. Having some sort of wish to be known as someone who has delicate tastes for hip, sophisticated music is something I guess any educated person desires even when they're grown. But who, besides the vulgar and uneducated, still listen to Top 20 music after the age of 20 or so?
Who would wish Prince to be compared to those things the young are being fed with, those gross dance and shit-hop would be superstars that pollute mainstream medias? If anything, I want Prince's music to be critically acclaimed , not commercially successful! Yes, I was somewhat happy to see that he sold so much after he passed, because I knew that he'd have smiled at the very notion, and it was like feeling happy for a friend for achieving their goals. And of course I'm glad to see all those kids coming to the org, becoming Prince fans so many years after Prince was "the" thing.
Not for me , but because yeah, I hope a lot of people can enjoy his music as much as I have and that it can bring them as many things as it brought me. And because I believe in art, and I think Prince was one of the greatest, and that humanity should not forget his work. But all of this has so little to do with sales, particularly in a world where, for one person who actually purchases a record, will download it illegally or listen to it on a streaming platform.
I already pre-ordered mine. That's a great price. I don't think I will buy 4ever, it's a joke to only include one unreleased song. Im glad its at least Moonbeam levels. But I will definitely buy PR Deluxe next year. And of course true to form Hopefully people stay faithful to Prince instated of them WB, why didn't you release the deluxe box awhile Prince was alive? What, you knew what was coming? Prince did tweet about it, he mentioned all was turn in but you WB were the ones withholding its publishing for a reason May be now, just maybe, we understand why The same with the "tell all book" by ex the backup dancer, which was due on Dec , yet it was pushed for a later released it seems April now A release notes that plans for the set "were agreed with Prince before he passed away.
It isE hard to conceive this as a compilation of Love Songs as some of these are so faraway from love songs. It is great to see these as a collective but most people, at least us here have them times over. Except for Moonbeams whichElvis Costello tried as he might give it justice at the Carnegie Hall Celebration what 2 years back?! That would be a great throw in if a good copy is available Questlove? Even 's Hugs and Ki sses ,the last new hit from him in terms of air play etc wasn't included. He gave us so many songs it's hard to package and repackage as they hit people so many different ways.
So they go by the official releases and then airplay or fan favorites and still the science misses, songs like The Morning Papers,Do Me baby, And God Created Woman, some songs that would give the not fully initiated an entre into Prince's gifts. It is hard to pick, I wonderif folk from his circle were consulted and I dont mean Tyka or Londell, as importantnow and then as they are in the big picture, I would rather have had known if his key collaborators, such as they were involved Sheila E of course, Nelson Hayes, Renato, If able John Blackwell,Idna and Donna, Wendy and Lisa and lastly Joshua and Cora.
These people were key parts of his musical family either directly in studio or live and or both. We will never know how exactly this prolific genius would have really wanted to do this and in fact he changed his mind too so often his own desires were as mercurial as he was. But in terms of giving the new and the faithful somethings new and different all at the same time, these peoples input could help to acheive that ,give the the entire Prince family somethings to look forward to purchase and so on.
In addition, Databank is very much mistaken when he I am assuming it's a 'he' says this: I am also a member of a Van Halen forum. Believe me, this site has nothing on that one when it comes to dissecting record sales. And over there, you have two distinct camps: I can't believe he approved the cover photo since he seemed to have left that era behind. I do love the pic, though.
If it's the uncensored version, then that would be a shock. Even more of a shocker if it's the updated version, which was played on the PA at one of the Indigo shows in ' That is unlikely but would be another reason to buy the set. I find myself agreeing with the comments about hoping for Edit versions in the cases where they have not been released yet on CD. With that in mind I'm hoping some of these are included: Little Red Corvette - Single Edit 4. Let's Go Crazy - Single Edit Let's Work - Single Edit Paisley Park - Video Edit. The word "pathetic" may have hit a nerve, but databank makes a good point.
Compare how many copies of Artificial Age sold to whatever Justin Beiber album came out closest to it. I'm not going to bother looking it up but my guess is Justin way outsold Artificial Age. Does that make Justin's album better? Sales and Billboard charts do not reflect quality or talent. By those kinds of standards Jimi Hendrix was a one hit wonder. Then there's the whole thing about validation. It would be kind of pathetic if we required sales charts or universal opinion to validate our own feelings and opinions of Prince's music.
I mean, "desire for approval" is indeed "juvenile" and most of us mature past it. The only thing relevent concerning how many copies sell is how those numbers affect the decisions concerning future releases. Other than that it means nothing and should have zero effect on the fans. In my not-so-humble opinion, of course There would still be a sense of sheer delight if we could hear one of his great but less known songs - outside of the over-played MBGITW - when turning the radio on and if one way to do that was to make him enter the charts, then what the heck, it's not going to hurt anyone either is it?
Prince himself seemed to attribute some importance to recognition and even sometimes put his fans under the spotlight by inviting them onstage to dance with him, why not do the same for him by ensuring he continues to be under that well deserved spotlight.
When you have a beautiful artwork in your possession, you don't just hide it in the garage do you? Well, I will be doing my part. But I do want to support Prince releases and continue to have every release so I will be buying it anyway. That's not really the point though.
The point is that how well a Prince album sells should have zero effect on a fan's opinion of that album. Sales and popularity should be irrelevent to us all. Overall it's great news. To me it means the ball is rolling. Honestly did anyone not see a "Greatest Hits" package being released 1st? Sure us diehards scratch ours heads but you had to see it coming. It's not like they are doing this for our benefit. Some are treating this like a slam to the fans when really it's just business. I just hope any of this unreleased stuff are the full length versions.
A shortened edit would kinda suck. That my biggest worry with any of the unreleased stuff. I think you misunderstand me: However, what I am trying to say - perhaps not clearly enough - is that even though we prefer Prince to Justin Bieber or whoever and believe his music to be superior, it still gives some of us a real sense of pleasure to see him at the top of the charts where he belongs. We are happy and content with our own personal musical choices, of course, irrespective of mainstream success.
I don't think it makes me pathetic - it makes me human; a human being proud of Prince's achievements. Incidentally, if you study human evolution, the 'desire for aproval' is an essential one, developed in the main, to ensure survival. We're basically social creatures, who tend to thrive in a 'pack'.
In days gone by, deliberately snubbing one's nose at the pack usually meant one would get eaten. That's not to say we haven't evolved from that point, or that we can't be individuals - of course not - we have highly developed brains, emotions, and can make personal choices derived from those. However, to completely and totally dismiss the idea of our tending to seek 'validation', no matter how immature or regressive it may appear is actually rather naive and not one based on good science. I don't disagree that it would indeed be a cool thing for a Prince release to be a "hit" again.
Some of us that have been here awhile may be a bit defensive against that kind of focus and some of those that joined the org this year may not be aware of the ongoing debate on the topic. Unfortunately a segment of our society judges how good art is by how much money it makes. I agree though that it is nice when good art makes good money but I get zero pleasure from having a popular opinion.
I'm happy to admit that I am relatively new to Prince. However, I'm not new to music forums per se. If you saw my earlier post about being a member of a Van Halen site, you'd appreciate that the focus on sales as an argument for evidencing 'good art' is something with which I am all too familiar, and often rail against having a preference for Sam Hagar-era VH rather than DLR - the former having sold 'fewer' records, lol!
As I say, Prince being marketed effectively, selling gazillions, and becoming 'popular' again won't change MY perception of him or his brilliance one iota. It will, however, give me that frisson of pride and satisfaction - it is that to which I was referring when I commented on the significance of record sales to many fans. We and I am one would be like a proud parent at a sports day at which my child is victorious! I knew all along how amazing he was, of course: Of course, good manners will dictate I be self-effacing about it all It doesn't change a thing about my stand on the rest, just proves that Prince fans don't have more identity issues than others, which in a sense is reassuring.
You are totally correct in what you say about our instinct for peer approval, and I also want to thank you for providing intelligent replies to my remarks this is all too rare here, where one usually end-up being flamed for expressing controversial opinions. First is that - and it's funny because I've been working on that lately in my intercultural studies class with Chinese students - one of the basis of the Western civilization is individualism.
To take many shortcuts it's obviously not as simple as what I'm gonna say , my interpretation of this is that each individual is to build their own system of values and to aim at being recognized by their peers for what differentiates them from the pack, as opposed from what makes them belong to the pack. Therefore, as a strong believer in individualism, I've always fought, and will always fight people's tendency for conformism, as something I believe goes against their own happiness.
Have we learnt nothing from the man who's the reason we're here, i. Prince of course himself was happy when he scored a hit, because to him that meant his art reached the most people and, let's be honest, that also meant big bucks in his pockets. On the other hand Prince's whole career and lyrics was a lesson in NOT following conformist views, even by the somewhat eccentric standards of the star system, from not singing on We Are The World to changing his name to an unpronounceable symbol, from not endorsing drugs to openly bashing the very major labels he needed to score hits.
Prince, more than once, sabotaged his own career by making daring choices, but on the other hand he probably wouldn't be seen as such a mythic, rogue figure, if not for those daring choices. Now, I cannot deny that we can learn a great many different things from Prince's lyrics and career in terms of being loved by others, but the bottom line - and I hope all those new, young fans are reading this - is to make others respect you precisely because you are different and daring in your choices, attitudes and behavior.
I'd illustrate this by quoting the third verse of DOW:. I for one - that's just an example - have realized a long time ago than "to make a woman stare", I was better off being different and taking full responsibility for my very feminine sensibility, attitude and looks most people believe I'm gay while I'm not than trying to emulate the behavior and looks of your stereotypical macho, masculine male. It does pay off, at least with women with brains, because most will find me attractiove precisely because I stand out from the pack. That's one lesson I've been lucky enough to learn from Prince, among many others, when I was still a teenager.
So yeah, u're right, but aren't we to raise ourselves above our condition and predetermined animal behaviors, as well as the social norm? I say we are. One has to wonder where does it come from? It comes from mainstream medias trying to sell their shit. Mainstream TV and radio have a tacit agreement with major labels and film studios to promote their material. More than often, this material is dumb, prefabricated products aimed at the most common denominator. More than often you will hear a TV host praising how such guest is an artistic genius while they are in fact carpet sellers. Obviously this brainwashing is necessary in order to preserve ratings: It is our duty to society to fight this, because the more educated the people, the better the society we live in.
The popular success of a piece of music is mostly related to how intensively it's been promoted, and has nothing to do whatsoever with its qualities as a work of art. If it was the case, the Top wouldn't be filled with the likes of Rihanna, Bieber, Timberlake, Kesha, Gaga and so on, while dozens of daring, playful and complex records released every week won't even get close to touch the charts. This is even truer today because 30 years ago majors had some interest in promoting true artists, like Prince or Kate Bush, and taking the time to build them an audience.
Noiowadays they don't give a damn and prefer to throw prefabricated products on the market which they also did back then, but it was more balanced. I often read orgers my age or older complkaining that there is nothing interesting in contemporary music as opposed to when they were young. Believe me there is. I listen to a lot of recent music by new, young acts. But believe me, they are there and the music scene is as dynamic and creative as ever. But yes it should be on it. As said earlier in this thread , it seems that the compilation had been planned before Prince's death, and that it is not a negociation between WB and the estate.
Therefore, it only covers WB material. It seems that this is getting a mixed reception here, but honestly, is there a better 2-disc set on the market? We all may clamor for a 4-disc set or more, but for what this is, it seems pretty thoughtful. I was skeptical about another compilation when the rumors suggested one was coming, but this seems like a good effort as far as serving as a 2-disc overview.
I hope the extra disc will only contain Prince songs and nothing from Apollonia or the time. The way everything seems to be handled, the b sides from the era and a 17 minutes version of Computer Blue Totally agree with this comment. Prince sabotaged his own career by openly going against the stream. I'm sure that position alllowed him to sleep at night, knowing he was true to himself, and from the very beginning at that. That's why he was "feared" in the music industry. That in itself is a very dangerous and daring position.
Apollonia 6 and Ice Cream Castles deserve their own remastered edition with bonus tracks. And further down the line but not too far all the The Time tracks released with Prince's vocals It's my one bootleg dream! Great another rehash of the same hits collections of - Warners material we all have umpteen copiesof. I think I may even pass here.
I would agree - and said as much in the last part of my post to which you were responding, Databank Individuality and daring are to be applauded, of course - even if we're not always courageous enough to emulate those traits. In that sense, I personally very much want Prince's music to be MORE than just a 'niche market'; I don't want to be one of a select few who are familiar with, and appreciative of, his lesser known gems. I very much want Prince to be marketed succesfully so that he has, at least, some chance of becoming popular again with the masses - not because that makes me feel 'comfortable in my conformity' but because, in this numbers-obsessed world in which we live, it means we're more likely to hear more of those gems.
It means his legacy has even more chance of longevity - and because, as I explained earlier, it means more people getting the same joy from his work as that already experienced by those of us posting here! To do as you did, and quote P - 'there's joy in repetition' - the more of us hearing his material; the more joy there is around the world - and who wouldn't want that, huh!? Proof that it is not necessary to flame, denegrate, or belittle when discussing or debating. We don't have to agree, in fact discussions are more interesting when we don't. But as proven here, we can disagree while still being civil and respectful and get along just fine.
Thank you Dibblekins and databank for helping to illustrate this!! It's odd that 'Soft and Wet' is stuck between the two Prince tracks Unless PR has some exquisite versions of songs we know or maybe even stuff we do not know it is in the same category as '4ever'. Remastered Purple Rain is worth a lokk, but how about remastered Sign o the Times?
We would be remiss to not mention that the reason why this is happening is because the mass media is just 6 or 7 companies trying to turn profit. The kids who are making "true" music will not get to be heard because the Mass Media Conglomerates will have to pay them. We used to have major discussions about this in Nashville in the early to mid ninties.
He made any music post PR?!?!?!?!!!!? After Rave went nowhere Prince was bitching about Clive Davis not givign him hits. Hell, we know he was still obsessed with having "the biggest record contract in the world" in the late s. Do you really think he included bad copies of Black Eyed Peas songs on his records as an artistic decision?
Or HNR Phase 1? Prince desperately wanted hits and he was quick to boast about sales numbers and chart positions whenever he had "positive" ones. Sure, he made plenty of daring artistic choices which paid off. But he also made a lot of absolutely idiotic ones -- and then blamed others for their failure. He blamed WB when a record tanked, even though he stubbornly ignored their advice. Sales are important, especially when you end up selling records through shady labels who decide to use your single to add a couple of tracks from some rappers that are on your label.
Or when your record only gets sold through amateurish fan-run online shops. Or when it takes months until Jay-Z gives in and convinces his label to distribute your record. Prince will not be remembered for the disaster that was his post-WBR career. Or for the disastrous latter part of those WBR years.
And even those glorious s years will be countered with "if only he had done X". And his refusal to curate his back catalogue was downright criminal -- just look at how SOTT was disappearing from view in recent years. I can only hope the upcoming re-release of PR brings in plenty of cash and that whoever gets the rights to the Vault has deep pockets, because no, it is NOT cheap to work on such releases.
Go read this or this and then think of the mess that is Prince's vault. And those that acquire such rights will want evidence that their investment will have a sizable ROI. I don't think the performance of this upcoming compilation will be a showstopper, but if PR fails Oh please, as if any younger artist looks at Prince's career of the past two decades as a guiding light. This is great news. Other artist have many Greatest Hit compilation cds so I don't what's with the negative talk.
I myself will find it hard to re-buy all the stuff I already have, and that is why I think a one song campaign could be easier for fans who want to make a difference without having to spend too much money again. Having said that, this greatest hits album can still be a perfect end of year gift for non-fans, and perhaps a starting point for those who will want to discover the actual albums. And as Dibblekins already said, a re-newed popularity is also a means of spreading the joy and to renew people's interest in his music, especially from younger generations rather than a way to validate his already recognised talent as an artist.
Most artist now make their living off live performing. People are not buying cd like that in most cases and in some cases they don't want to buy downloads either. Why is it a crime to dependent on his back catlalogue? These young artist would sell their soul to devil for his back catalogue. He created these songs and their were his to play as he saw fit. He struggled but that's the business and by the looks of it the business is not getting any easier. He had his up and downs, but one can question his perseverance and that alone should be used as a "guiding light".
He was not relevent but I bet if he let people sample 80's work and they many alot of money he would relevent then. Give me a break. Would have been cool if it went up to date a bit more, even a token effort. The addition of something like.. Wasn't trying to combatative. I just don't think Prince got the credit he deserves for his later career.
One could argue the opposite, that they waited six months to the day, I think to announce this, out of respect and so as to not look like they were trying to monetize the tragedy. Either way, all signs point to P being on board with this release so it'd be crazy for WB not to get it out there. There was a really high quality lyric video for it on YT along with loads of other unreleased tracks but they've I'm thinking it's going to be the same live version of Nothing as the release is heralding only one unreleased vault song, Moonbeam levels.
Otherwise, it might magically reappear, lol. Yesterday I tried 2 write a novel but I didn't know where 2 begin So I laid down in the grass tryin' 2 feel the world turn Boy loses girl in a rain storm, nuclear World War iii All that's left is pain and sorrow, as far as he's concerned. He says please send all your moonbeam levels 2 me Please send all your moonbeam levels 2 me Please send all your moonbeam levels 2 me Please send all your moonbeam levels 2 me I'm lookin' 4 a better place 2 die.
Maybe he's lookin' 4 a different world Maybe he's lookin' 4 a brand new high Maybe he would like a nice condo overlookin' the rings of Saturn Maybe he wants affection instead of a plastic life Maybe he doesn't know what he wants at all. A newborn child knows nothing of destruction Nothing of love and hate What happens in between is a mystery Because we don't give a damn about his fate. He said he'll never keep diaries 2 learn from his mistakes Instead he'll just repeat all the good things that he's done Fight 4 perfect love until it's perfect love he makes When he's happy then his battle will be won It's never 2 late.
Please send all your moonbeam levels 2 me Send your.. Send 2 me Please send all your moonbeam levels 2 me Send your levels 2 me Please send all your moonbeam levels 2 me Sending me your.. Send 2 me I'm lookin' 4 a better place 2 die Better place 2 die. Please send all your moonbeam levels 2 me Oh yeah! Oh okay then, we don't like the concept, but many of us will still end up buying it anyway. I know I will because I am just a mugu Nigerian term meaning the one being scammed who will buy anything with Prince's name on it. But Warners to start respecting the fans more and stop dangling these carrots in front of us 39 songs we all have in multiple forms and 1 unreleased nugget, most of us with extensive boot and unrelased jam collections already have anyway.
I think Warners needs to stop going after new fans so much, the newbie overload after his death has died down and left us with some new geniune fans, but many of the fairweather ones like the fairweather fans who bought Purple Rain As Prince said, dug it because it was a hit , will fade and not buy hits collection after hit collection.
The newbie approach ahs not worked, as re releases of his WB albums on CD have not sold well beyond the entry level Very best of and some copies of The Hits and Ultimate. Hits was at least decent as we got the disc of B sides and lets face it, those B sides were good, and Ultimate gave us the gimmick of 12 inch mixes on Disc 2, which again were dope, but this new one has 1 song!! Not many copies of the albums have sold and one person mentioned that Warners must realise Prince is an artist with a mostly aging fanbase, just like MJ.
The MJ marketing thing has been better, with only 2 official releases - the patchy Michael 18 months after his death Which had 3 songs, that were likely not MJ vocals and the fairly good Xscape, which was mostly Invincible era out takes and some dreadful remixes. But then you have This is it and Icon along with re releases of classic albums and documentaries. They are decent and I thought Bad25 was good and even this year's off the wall experience. But in reality they were not huge sellers Even a JT plug for Xscape was not that successful , so overdoing Prince may not serve WB well, especially as MJ was a bigger seller overall with a wider fan base.
Kind of crazy that the first posthumous song being released features lyrics, " I'm lookin' 4 a better place 2 die" and " He don't, he don't really wanna die". I do think it is a little dangerous for Warners to always highlight a narrow slice of Prince's career. For example, by always ignoring tracks from The Gold Experience, this will make casual listeners ignorant of that era.
If Warners then wished to release a Gold Experience deluxe edition, it would pick up less interest. Warners know that the casual buyer will be attracted to the bigger hits, so this is a good opportunity to sneak in the lessor known singles. Anyone have any idea as to whether either release will be available on streaming platforms?
That said, those Indigo nights were pretty amazing so my mind probably doesn't remember everything. I may well have been there and heard it and not processed it correctly. Did you seriously think there was ever a chance of that happening. How are they going to do an Xmas album, that would usually mean the artist recording specific material for one. Look, we all wish he wasn't - but he's gone.
People talking about "I'm not buying it because he didn't authorize it" blah, blah - what you've never bought an album by a deceased artist before? Prince is no different to any other artist. Why isn't that on it? To me this says there are still legal hoops to jump through before they can include material like this. It's only six months since his passing. There are many more releases to come in the future.
I wouldn't be surprised if WBR have urged Prince repeatedly to do remastered and expanded releases and to allow them access to later material for inclusion on compilations. It wasn't listed as such on the back cover of The Hits? It decreases the value of it's inclusion? The only reason it's there is because it's one of his best known songs, if the live version hadn't been edited for the Hits, I doubt it would've been included here at all. I'm sure if they were including Prince's studio version they would've said so in the blurb purely for it's marketing potential.
I wish they had put '4ever' on it That would make sense, but when did anything make sense with Prince? I got a pre-order heads up from Amazon this morning. Most likely I'd say. I have Tidal and every release and more are basically right on time. None of the Edits I was hoping for are listed here: Do we know what Head Sound Recording is? I'm still holding out hope for some of those, because I have trouble believing When Doves Cry is gonna be the full album version.
Somebody should run the numbers and see if the tracklistings of each disc add up to 80 minutes The one's I mention haven't been released on a commercial CD as of yet. PR is a far more intriguing project. Hopefully there will be an accompanying vinyl release. I'd still say the best introduction for a new fan is The Very Best of Prince, if they like that then they can start buying the albums.
I'd be a lot more forgiving of this project if the tracklist had been carefully chosen and not just slapped together. And that play order is all over the place. Neither chronological nor in some kind of playlisted order, just some muddy point inbetween. Not to mention that it ends in but the artwork is from at least a decade later? How does that even make sense? Sure Prince approved it , course he did.
He also approved the film and every other of a million projects until he didn't. I'm not laying the blame for this one on him. As for the rights issues with everything post Ok fair enough, it's messy but you know what? You're a record company, it's your job to negotiate those rights, talk to the family already. So yeah, I'm gonna buy this compilation, i'm gonna listen to this compilation and you know what, i'm going to be critical of this compilation. I trollishly but not because I was kidding predicted that this is exactly what would happen I hope Moonbeam Levels gets bootlegged to Kingdom Come.
The Prince version has always been credited to just "Prince" on the front covers of the single releases and "Featuring Rosie Gains with The New Power Generation" in smaller text elsewhere. Some other edit versions like ones of "Batdance" and "Glam Slam" were also released on CD as singles, but not on any album, you're right about that. Apologies, I think I was unclear: I'm just saying it's likely that they'll include the single edit of WDC, but the tracklisting doesn't explicitly say that it's the single edit. Again, it's a stretch, but not without hope Why would they go against his wishes.
Yes it's pathetic, I would buy it if there was at least unreleased songs on it but one? Where exactly have you heard this from? Sounds like total bull. TGE was a Warner Bros release, after all. Alphabet Street edit is available on this promo. I'd love to hear full length without a fade out or segue into Little Red Corvette but I suspect you'd need to go back to the mastertapes for that one.
Like they'd ripped it off a cassette or something. Partyman- back in the day there was a radio station down in Texas that would play Delerious and as it was fading out they faded in Horny Toad without missing a beat. It was an excellant mix!! I have that Alphabet St. Too bad it doesn't have the "Cont. I don't claim the legalities of the situation.
However, it is weird that the top 2 US charting songs that didn't make the new compilation were both from TGE. I would be curious to hear if there was another reason they wouldn't make the 40 songs included in the compilation if it wasn't for some contractual legalities. It could be argued looking at the world wide charts that TMBGITW was his most successful single, though it is one of my least favorites.
Why exlude it and Hate U for that matter when they included so many non-hits from ealier albums. Especially since TGE was one of his most underexposed albums that had true commercial potential. I know Moonbeam Levels was originally recorded in but it was later considered for the Rave album in the lates. Was the track intended for Rave a re-recording of the original?
I only wonder because of it's placement on this set. Let us hope PR deluxe is better and we don't get the original album remastered with 1 or 2 extended mixes and no out takes like Electric Intercourse. Actually think I will not buy forever, but hint at someone to buy it for me as a present like the did with the Very Best of, which is what this album is on steroids. Maybe a coincidence, but everything on this new collection was previously released except MBL, of course using the Prince name - there are no tracks on there.
TGE is a album. Just been listening to some of my Prince collection and tbh had never listened to Moonbeam Levels and have to say that it does sound very very dated and not the game changer that some people have said. In addition to Bart's correct observations, I'm sure I recall a Prince magazine interview possibly one of the Q mag features in the late 90s where he said something like "Ah, The Gold Experience - the only one they don't own" meaning WBR. I am hoping the Greatest Hits compilation will at least have a bit of remastering done to give all these classic Prince tracks a good lift in sound quality.
The Purple Rain Deluxe version should be good. Hopefully all of those other songs featured in the film will make an appearance on this release. This is so NOT what fans need Such an insulting cash grab, the industry is so outdated now. Prince said it best when he said that music should be totally free of course, he went back and forth on this, lol.
Anyway, on the plus side, these collections may bring new ppl to his music, and that's always cool I know, I have always wanted to hear the album version remastered Yes, it's a cash grab. If they do not pay the taxes the government will sieze everything and sell it all off to pay the tax bill. If you want Prince's music and legacy to continue into the future in any kind of coherent way then the taxes have to be paid. Without the cash grab there will be no art. Same here, but that's probably a deal best done with Tidal or through some other service for hardcore fans.
I'm pretty sure there is a finished Phase 3 as Prince refered to it. I listened to it last night and it sounds muffled compared to the other tracks on the CD. The version on the Girl 6 soundtrack is mastered very nicely, definitely worth picking up for it and others. I'm seeing the posts about omissions of classic singles and deep album tracks from he 4Ever release, but this release is not designed for that.
As I see it, it's targeted to capitalize on Prince nostalgia among general audiences in the wake of his passing, during the holiday season. The PR release will be a big release for avid fans and collectors. Yes I actually have the Girl 6 soundtrack We can get really technical on that but does it really matter? The bass and sound is as loud as the Crystal Ball albums take it or leave it lol.
We can only hope that the estate team steps into the breach. I'd guess that most of the label folks with the most knowledge of his catalogue are long gone. Perhaps you misunderstand what I'm saying: The point I was making was there are other ways of making money than milking hits that all the hardcore AND even casual fans own! As far as the taxes are concerned, they can be paid in more creative ways!
Btw, did you have to be insulting in your response? I am fully aware that they need an influx of capital, but these two collections seem like they weren't really thought out The greatest hits are not what you and I want, but that's what people bought when he died and that's what they'll buy during the holidays. Moonbeam Levels is a great addition to the songs Prince is already widely known for, he had so many sides and the track is a glorious example. It figures the release most hardcore fans bitterly desired when he was alive is not enough for some now that he passed away.
We just need to let the business folks and lawyers set it up, there are plenty that worship Prince and eventually they'll do a great job. You just need to give them a chance and support the legacy. After all, Prince isn't personally trying to part you with your hard earned cash right now. Consider it an homage to buy both releases, no matter what is in your collection.
Staying away will never give you what you really want. You know, I was letting my feelings about this get the better of me. Your comments actually really put things in perspective! So thank you, I truly need to have patience when it comes to this, I just love him so much and recall his record company troubles in the past ect. But you are absolutely right: ONLY 1 vault track I'll wait until they get it right, plus I already have 'Moonbeam Levels' Beautifully said, as always. How many of us would have jumped for joy at the release of "Moonbeam Levels" 7 months ago?
I know that I would trade it all for Prince to still be with us, without question, but this announcement was the first time I've smiled about Prince in 6 months. Just going to the record store and buying a new Prince release will be an emotional moment, but one that feels right.
Also, I maintain that a truly slapdash release would not have been so balanced as this is. Seeing songs like "Mountains" and "Paisley Park" finally get their due on a Prince compilation is enough to make me happy. They should do that. I don't think sticking a few other singles on it makes it 'balanced' but whatever, it is what it is, it's not like the music is bad. It's by far the most balanced of his compilations if you break it down on a yearly basis.
I'm not sure it's not the best 2-disc intro to Prince that will be available. But comparing 4ever to the first 2 discs and to Ultimate , you can see that 4ever has broader coverage: Soft and Wet 4ever 1: Soft and Wet U 0 Prince: Controversy, Do Me Baby 4ever 3: Controversy, Let's Work Raspberry Beret, Pop Life 4ever 3: Kiss Sign o' the Times: U 0 Graffiti Bridge: Thieves in the Temple 4ever 1: Thieves in the Temple U 1: Thieves in the Temple Diamonds and Pearls: Gett Off, Cream, Diamonds and Pearls 4ever 3: Sexy MF, 7 4ever 3: My Name Is Prince, 7 Hits: Nothing Comapres 2 U, Peach U 1: Unless it has stuff in pristine quality we did not hear before in lesser quality it is simply meh.
Ok, that's a fair point. I do think there are omissions and inclusions that are mistakes and make me very dubious as to how much thought went into it but your point is well made. See this page on princevault Much easier than digging up the songlist. Prince's days of chart success were mainly pre anyway. None of them exactly set the world on fire. Prince's best days were definitely pre Yeah, I think it's not absolutely perfect or anything, but I'm generally pleased with it.
Of course, I would love a 3 or 4 or 5 disc set, but I'm not sure the public would stomach it. It came on MTV every few hours for months after it was released. They were still playing it regularly when Emancipation was released. I'm sure more people recognize it as a Prince song than Little Red Corvette. It definitely was a big hit, but it also had a lot of people reacting negatively to it. What Prince was wearing in the video got a lot of people riled up. I remember also how the use of falsetto vocals was very unusual for a song appearing on the airwaves during that period as well.
So what Moonbeam Levles is way different? Not a new recording but singficatly different. He said not too long ago that many of the bootleged song are not finished! And as clear as it is comparing it to how it was back in the 80s bootlegs to the ones now there are elements that seem wrong to me But my big question is my budget is pretty tight for the next year or so Also they made some odd decisions Would Warner have to use the less well-known version from TGE?
Would that have affected their thinking. If they've had the right to include it, it seems bizarre that they wouldn't include one of his biggest hits. For me, it makes no difference if Moonbeam Levels is the version we know from bootlegs or if it is an updated, "finished" version.
Honestly, I know I'm in the minority here, but I've always found the track to be highly over-rated. I disagree with those that say ML should have replaced Free on , I prefer Free any day of the week. I agree with Prince's decision to not include ML on as it just doesn't fit with the rest of the album. At best it would have made a decent b-side. As for this being the only new song to accompany this compilation, not only do I think it's not the best choice but quite frankly I find it to be a rather morbid addition, considering the lyrics.
I'll still pick the set up to keep my collection complete and to do my part to support the continuation of posthumous releases. But I consider this one a poorly concieved, unnecessary release. It won't even be the best compilation available, so, there is really no point to it. Bring on the PR release, not for the remastering but for the 2nd disc.
