No Place for Children
Innocent people lose their jobs, their homes, and their children while they are in jail. Sometimes children get caught up in the criminal justice system and never escape. The New Orleans team recently decided to make this issue a focus of their work because the problem of mass incarceration—for young people and adults—has become particularly acute. Because he had so many school absences in addition to the arrest, he must now attend a special program. If he does not attend regularly, his mother may be arrested and he may be sent to the juvenile jail.

Having heard stories like these for years, ATD Volunteer Corps member Maria Victoire teamed up with two organizations that address the root causes of these situations. These children suffer not just acutely, but potentially, over their lifetimes, because trauma and early adversity leave tracks in the developing brain that can affect the immune system, heart, behavioral health—even the expression of genes.
Science tells us that these adverse experiences can even be passed on to future generations through changes in the DNA of these children.

Immigrant children fleeing violence and persecution face a formidable list of challenges, including poverty, food-insecurity, language barriers and history of trauma. Pediatricians recognize these dangers and are intervening so that these adverse experiences do not become these children's destiny and trauma does not dictate their life story.
No Place for Kids
We want to ensure that these scared and vulnerable children are treated with compassion and not exposed to conditions that may further harm them. Immigrant children are still children. They need to be protected, not prosecuted. Most of these families are not a risk to society. Instead of being held in detention they should be released as a family to the community, while their immigration cases proceed.

It's in our national interest that leaders and professionals from across healthcare work together to ensure that all children—including immigrant, border and migrant children—grow up physically and developmentally healthy. Raising funds for documentaries is always a challenge, regardless if you are a first-timer or veteran filmmaker. This being our second kickstarter campaign we surpassed our goal for The Club documentary, which was eventually acquired by HBO , we are prepared for the challenges that lie ahead, such as maintaining a steady flow of contributions, mobilizing audiences to engage with our footage and subject matter and to ultimately be able to complete this film and find a distributor.
We started filming last May and have been so far funding this project ourselves. Despite having only been in the early stages of production, we found ourselves in the same room as well-known filmmakers like Marshall Curry, pitching our doc-in-progress to the likes of BBC and Thirteen.
Although we managed to garner a great deal of interest and several letters of intent for sales both domestically and internationally , we are still in need of funding which is why we are now turning to crowd-funding.
Kickstarter allows artists to mobilize audiences in an immediate and accessible manner. As independent filmmakers we are encouraged by the opportunity to raise both money and awareness surrounding the extreme sentencing of youth in America. We are very aware of the roadblocks we may encounter, but are completely committed to seeing this project through to fruition and determined to tell what we believe are incredibly important stories We promise to be transparent with every high and low of our journey, because as soon as you back this film, you become an integral part of it!
We have also found private investors who have agreed to match the last 15k we raise, so therein lies OUR incentive! Questions about this project? Check out the FAQ. Ah, the gift of giving. Shall we say your incentive prize is simply knowing you've helped a documentary that exposes the important issue of juvenile incarceration get made, and ultimately seen?
