My Fierce Highlander (Highland Adventure, #1) by Vonda Sinclair
Sinclair captured my attention with the heat of battle and seduction. I shed tears of laughter and sadness as Alasdair and Gwyneth sorted through emotions that at times seemed destructive. Sinclair on a well written tale of love and devotion between two characters who were easy to "My Fierce Highlander" is the first book that I've read from Vonda Sinclair. Sinclair on a well written tale of love and devotion between two characters who were easy to fall in love with.
This is a must read for anyone who is passionate about Scotland and for those who just love an all-consuming love story. Aug 19, Clarice rated it really liked it. Alasdair never though that he would find love again until he met Gwyneth and her son Rory. She saved his life, in return he saved her's. Two proud, strong, and fierce people coming together to find an explosive passion that neither of them expected. Mar 20, lyhmer rated it did not like it Shelves: It could work with others but unfortunately, not me. Laura the Highland Hussy. Quick read and hooked me till the last page.
I loved Alasdair but I feel wanna slap and shake Gwyneth for her refusing. When she rejected Alasdair, I got angry. Its took her a while to accept and realize how much she love Alasdair. I loved Rory too, his character always make me laugh. For Gwyneth whose gentle upbringing in England had taught her to love peace, rearing her son Rory amidst the constant whirl of violence is a trial in itself. And when she stumbles across the injured man lying in a war torn battlefield, even knowing that harboring the enemy would most likely get her killed or worse, the healer within Gywneth refuses to turn her back on the man who calls to something inside of her that refuses to be denied.
When Laird Alasdair MacGrath, leader of the MacGrath clan opens up his eyes to see a bonny English lass tending to his wounds, he is confused by the tingles of desire that rises forth at the most unexpected moment. Ever since his wife had died two years back, Alasdair had stayed true to the memory of his wife whom he had loved and adored till death had snatched her from his life. When circumstanced find Gwyneth and her son Rory seeking refuge with the MacGrath clan, the awareness that had sprung forth from that very first day of their acquaintance multiplies until both Gwyneth and Alasdair have no will left in them except to embrace their desire for one another.
Gwyneth who has experienced nothing but humiliation and at worse pain at the hands of men, whose banishment from life as she had known it had come because of her wanton desires for a man finds herself trying to resist Alasdair and the temptation he presents at every turn.
Alasdair who vows that he would never fall in love again and make himself vulnerable to an emotion that can tear his world apart finds himself slowly falling into the clutches of just that emotion as Gwyneth and Rory work their way into his heart, body and soul. The fierce desire within Alasdair to claim, protect and cosset Gwyneth surprises even him because of the strength of his feelings towards her, but Alasdair knows that for him, there would be none like Gwyneth ever.
Though at times I cringed a bit from all the flowery compliments he bestows on Gwyneth, it is apparent right from the very start that when it comes to Gwyneth, Alastair would lay down his very life to protect her and her son. Gwyneth survives in the Highlands because for her son Rory who means the world to her, she would do just about anything.
Even if it means marrying a man twice her age, who is abusive at most or seeking refuge from the enemy until she can provide the kind of life she dreams of for her son, Gwyneth is prepared to do all that and more. The one hitch in her well laid plans comes from her desire to possess and be possessed by the only man who has ever stirred her senses and leaves her wanting more with each encounter.
Alastair proves time and yet again that he is willing to move heaven and earth to keep Gwyneth by his side and though Gwyneth keeps turning him down at every turn, Alastair still keeps coming back for more until the very last encounter drives him away from her with his heart torn into pieces, with her memories keeping her image very much alive in his mind. I right about gave up on Gwyneth almost towards the end of the book, but decided to forgive her because she makes up for it at the end, proving her love and loyalty to a man who deserves all that and so much more.
Highly sensual and romantic with constant adventure to keep the adrenaline running, My Fierce Highlander by Vonda Sinclair rates as a great read, recommended for fans of the genre, and those who love a fierce yet tender hero who looks mighty fine in a kilt at any given time. Mar 17, MaryD rated it liked it Shelves: Not quite sure why, but this just didn't jell for me.
I liked the side characters, especially Alasdair, but somehow I struggled with Gwyneth Carswell's character. The story itself was OK, but somehow disjointed.

Mar 04, Marielle rated it it was ok Shelves: I so wanted to like this book. I love Highland romances, I hadn't read one in a while and based on the reviews this one was going to be great. For a while I thought I had read the wrong reviews. Those high ratings couldn't possible be about the same book I was reading.
I found this a very silly romance. The writing is simple, to the point that I sometimes had to laugh out loud at the stupidity. And the constant and repetitve internal dialogue had me skipping entire pages. It felt I so wanted to like this book. It felt like it was written by a beginner without someone editing.

And why the constant exclamations: It really got annoying. The heroin is the worst. Although his face was covered in mud and blood, she immediately knew he was hansom and a good person: She lived in Scotland for six years and still understood only a little bit of Gaelic Then she constantly whined about everything. How she was a bad mother, a bad daughter, a bad woman etcetera. And although she is a healer To top it all up. She had a supersilly wish to do good by her son by providing him materialistic things completely ignoring his wishes. Yes, then I guess you're a bad mother and an egoistic one at that.
Do I need to add I started to hate her in the end? So with all this stupidity going on, I really couldn't understand why the fierce Highlanden, for yes, he was indeed fierce, loved her so much. The bedroom scenes were hot though and I managed to finish this book. I still wonder why everybody thinks this book is so great. Has nobody read anything by Monica McCarty? Apr 23, Regan Walker rated it really liked it Shelves: There she has raised her son, who is now five. Married to a man not of her choosing and then widowed, she is surrounded by clan violence. When a clash of the MacIrwins and their enemies, the MacGraths, leave the MacGrath laird wounded, she takes him in at great risk saving his life.
Her cousin, the MacIrwin, finds out she has aided the enemy and, even though he knows she is a healer, he seeks to kill her. So, she flees to the MacGraths. Alasdair, laird of the MacGraths wants only peace and an end to the year-old. For good reason, he does not trust the MacIrwins and now, as a matter of honor, he must shelter the woman who has saved his life. Alasdair is a worthy hero who wants the best for his people. In the end, Gwyneth must overcome her disdain for the violence of life in the Highlands if she is to have a future there.
There are many love scenes as Gwyneth and Alaisdair give in to their strong attraction. Aug 09, Lovetoread rated it really liked it Shelves: I just liked this story.
I was really disappointed because I wanted to warm up and like the h more. She was just to much self sacrificing always having internal dialog of guilt every time she hooked up with the H. I loved the H character. He loved the h more than the breath he took and viewed her as being everything to him. She instinctively knew this but still, her guilt was just to over the top. And I understand how emotionally damaged the h was by having been banished by her father because sh I just liked this story.
And I understand how emotionally damaged the h was by having been banished by her father because she was pregnant. I also understand after the father of the baby called her very derogatory names refused to marry her. That her mean cousin forced her to marry a cruel, hateful man.
I can also understand how when that man died she would finally feel free to live her life and take care of her 6 year old son with the wish to live in peace. But I just feel the guilt was so drawn out. Towards the half way point in the book I tearing my hair out with the guilt. This is the first time I have read this author. I will try another of her books. As I said liked the story, loved the H along with all the supporting characters in the book. I just hope that the h in this story is not typical of the type of h's this author usually has.
His people were ambushed attempting to get a peace treaty signed that MacIrwin had agreed to. Gwyneth Carswel was banished to the highlands several years ago to her cousin MacIrwin due to an "incident" that happened in England. Gwyneth was out searching for herbs when she heard the battle happening. After she went looking to see if anyone survived. She came across a very handsome man. She wanted to save at least one person from the useless battle no matter if friend or foe.
Alasdair woke in a strange place completly undressed and his wounds tended. He spied a very beautiful woman sitting next to him and was wondering where he was and whom the angle was. He snuck out while the lass was out attending to chores of her own. Nov 04, Shawn rated it it was ok. The heroine was wishy washy and to beat up herself for sleeping with the hero every single time she did it, then turn right back around and sleep with him again was just plain idiotic and old.
I bearly finish this book. I just didn't care what happened. Feb 24, Whitney rated it liked it Shelves: The ending was a little overdone if you ask me. I would've rated it 4 stars but the ending just killed it. It was too much. At one point, the book could have been over but it just didn't go that way.
Great story but awful narration. Andrew Bryan's pronunciations are all off and he does this weird echo to capture the characters thoughts--I find it to be very annoying. No woman had ever lured him to forget who he was…forget his past, his future, and fill him with the need to have her no matter the cost to his soul. He passed her name through his thoughts a hundred times a day. He wanted to say her name, whisper it into her ear. But by the same token, a home rich in material goods, but lacking in love is no real advantage either. Sinclair does an excellent job of illustrating the difficult balancing act Gwyneth performs as Rory's mother while allowing the reader to view the heartbreak Alasdair endures in his role as the drama unfolds.
Each scene felt fraught with emotion as two wounded souls struggle first to remain at arms length, then to come together, then to resist each other, then to draw close again, in the complicated dance of courting that defines Highland romance at its most intense--all with the feelings of a fatherless boy complicating matters. The characters are well-drawn, with all the human frailties that capture the imagination and make them truly relatable, rather than ideal paragons of virtue, brilliance and clarity of mind.
Fans of historical fiction will no doubt enjoy reading My Fierce Highlander, and I am looking forward to reading Lachlan's story in the next novel in this series. I loved this highland romance. Well written with a compelling story. A passionate romance with subtle humor as well. I enjoyed this novel far more than the last few novels by other authors. Sinclair gives so much more substance to her story than most romance writers! The story allows the reader to look through a window to the past. The lifestyle is primitive. In this case, the love-story is remarkable.
So many Regency romances include the threat that a misbehaving daughter will be sent off to Scotland and forced to marry a stranger, this story explores what might happen if the threat were carried out. Gwyneth is a nobly-born English woman who gets pregnant by a lord who refuses to marry her. Unlike most stories that start out this way, she actually is forced to marry and the man she's sold to is a horror.
His brutish nature, however, gets him killed off pretty quickly. None of which is a spoiler, as this story starts with the widowed mother trying to make her way, do what's best for her child, and still hold true to her morals and values. She's not always wise, but then who ever is? The laird who falls for her is likewise imperfect.
He's not the idealized hero who wins every fight and outsmarts every foe, but he is a good, caring man who fights with all he has for those he loves. Sinclair makes really good use of the historical period, weaving bits of the culture and politics and justice system of the time into the story without getting bogged down in tedious detail. There are a few minor plot holes and the bad guys are rather unbelievable caricatures of evil, which is why I gave it four stars instead of five, but those are minor issues.
This is a good, fun romp through the Highlands with plenty of adventure and lots of romance.
