Damaris is a very clever duck who with Rory her sheepdog friend figure out how to give just desserts to the arrogant pigs with names like Mrs.

The results are nearly disastrous for all, but all ends well in this appealing fantasy. Each page holds pulsating paintings that swirl and move, further vivifying each poem. Anansi is a trickster so when he invites Turtle to a party it is, of course, a scam. But turnabout is fair play, and so Anansi gets his comeuppance. Humor abounds in the energetic, droll illustrations and contemporary retelling of this traditional tale. Traction Man is back! In this adventure Traction Man takes on a compost heap, loses his trusty Scrubbing Brush, and meets Turbo Dog — all with tongue-in-cheek humor in both comic-strip-like illustrations and understated language.

Sanchez is sensitive and insightful when talking about both gay and Hispanic culture, and he's created a delightful heroine in Xio. Our narrator Chuy is dead! He was stabbed in a nightclub bathroom by another teen who misunderstood something he said. As he floats around in the afterlife, he not only learns about being dead, but he also comes to understand his short life. Not necessarily, as half-Cuban, half-Polish Violet can barely speak Spanish.

As the plans move forward, Violet comes to terms with her heritage in this warm and funny novel. Esmeralda Santiago's story begins in rural Puerto Rico, where her childhood was full of both tenderness and domestic strife, tropical sounds and sights as well as poverty. When her mother, Mami, a force of nature, takes off to New York with her seven soon to be eleven children, Esmeralda as the oldest must learn new rules, a new language, and eventually take on a new identity. Sofia is a Mexican-American living in Texas. When she is accepted to a prestigious, predominantly white boarding school, she learns how to meld her Mexican-American roots with her new life.

The author includes lots of detail about Mexican culture and heritage. Fifteen-year-old Victor decides to cross the U. The border patrol is only one of his worries, which also include drug dealers, extreme temperatures, and fellow migrants. This is an eye-opening look at what draws many immigrants to the U. Mama has three kittens.

Fluffy and Skinny do things when their mama does, but not Boris who marches to his beat. Readers will recognize themselves in this satisfying and brilliantly colored picture book. A hungry gray mouse eats its way through colors eating a variety of vegetables in this winning, brilliantly illustrated adventure that doubles as a concept book. The sounds of a caterpillar munching through vegetation combine with Fleming's distinctive illustrations for a small adventure in the tall, tall grass.

The satisfying conclusion is a sleepy one, making this an ideal bedtime tale.

This colorful and somewhat eclectic collection of rhymes and information is made for sharing and reading over. Tidbits include everything from seasons to the alphabet and more, all illustrated with Fleming's signature illustrations. When the cow discovers that she's lost her distinctive "moo," she visits other farm animals to retrieve it. Her proper voice is magically restored when she meets a chicken who moos! This is a playful, colorful introduction to farm animals and their sounds. Buster is happy being an only dog and finds that he is fearful of the new addition, a small white kitten named Betty.

Buster learns, however, that being a friend is special in its own happy and unique way. Animals on a farm can be a noisy lot, but not the goose that quietly chases a butterfly throughout the barnyard. The alliteration and onomatopoeia makes reading aloud fun and is neatly integrated into the colorful illustrations. An appealing mouse also seen in Lunch creates active letters of the alphabet, beginning by "airbrushing" the A and all the way to the zipped Z. The mouse keeps a calendar of work accomplished which astute readers will note at the end.

Her "travelin' eye" doesn't bother the narrator at all but it does mean that she has trouble focusing in school. The patch and eyeglasses prescribed by the ophthalmologist give her classmates something to tease her about — until she makes them her own fashion statement. Even though Dudley Ellington has trouble focusing on school work, his teacher is the very patient Mrs. But the talented Mrs.

McCaw cannot draw a face in profile — that is until Dudley patiently shows her and his class how to do so. Lighthearted, cartoon-like illustrations are used to enhance the straightforward text. Marvin's excitement about first grade quickly dwindles when his name doesn't appear on the list and the class is short one desk. Add to that the fact that he struggles to read, well, it's clear that he's just "one too many.

Try as she might, second grader Carolyn struggles with cursive. A wise teacher, however, helps the child recognize that her imagination and creative writing are her strengths, just like some other famous writers. Real problems and frustrations are presented with a light touch in this engaging book. Part of The Adventures of Everyday Geniuses series. David's teacher asks for a parent conference when David's behavior distracts the rest of the class. David, however, comes up with his own wiggle fidget cures that he shares at the meeting, combining creativity and practicality that just may help others with the wiggle fidgets.

Max's hopes of becoming an engineer seem unattainable as Max's brain freezes every time he takes a timed math fact test and is teased by the other children. That is until it's discovered that Max understands how math works but just has trouble with memorization. A satisfying resolution does not involve a timer! Katie is keen observer and a curious third grader. So when her dad explains why he finds spelling difficult, Katie wants to investigate. She learns that her very intelligent dad, a lawyer, has dyslexia — probably like a couple of Katie's classmates.
