Eventually it blooms and really looks like a daffodil. Charmingly told and illustrated. Mole wakes up and is excited about the arrival of spring. He then decides to make him breakfast and that does the trick. A literal in the illustrations and metaphorical interpretation of the age old simile describing the change of seasons. A good picture book addition to Springtime collections. It is spring when City Dog meets Country Frog. Through the seasons they form a special friendship.
He comes back in the spring, still no Frog, but he does meet Country Chipmunk. Watercolors make this poignant picture book even more special. A little duck arrives at her pond in the early spring to find it frozen.

It includes a garden, turtle ponds, seedlings, ladybugs, gold stars, signs for reading, notes for singing, wings for wearing, etc. The artwork has so much to poor over, enjoy and laugh at. Men dressed in yellow hats and boots arrive to put the fire out. The lesson learned is that it is not safe to play with matches.

Herman the Turtle and Cherry the Chipmunk confirm with Mr. White Paws the Cat that there is a bear around. Suddenly, the little girl is in danger as she stumbles right into the path of a pound momma bear and her two cubs. Huey the Hummingbird attempts to try and save the girl but it is the police officer who comes to the rescue.

The lesson learned is to be aware of your surroundings. Owen the Owl begs the sky for rain. Herman gets very sick from poor pond conditions and is taken away by his concerned family. The lesson learned is there is no place like home. Herman the Turtle, Mr. White Paws the Cat, Chorizo, the Miniature Dachshund, Candy the Cardinal, and Huey the Hummingbird are bewildered when they see a red and black flannel shirt appear and disappear before them near Spring Pond.
The lesson learned is never jump to conclusions. It is time for the annual Easter egg hunt and children arrive to fill their baskets with brightly colored Easter eggs. All is well until Felix the Fox stops by to cause trouble for Sugar.
The lesson learned is look out for each other. White Paws frets over how to prepare the forest animals. Quinlan's presentation kept the interest of all our students. They truly enjoyed everything that she had to share, especially her suggestions on how to become a writer. We have been using Writer's Workshop in our building, and Ms. Quinlan's experiences fit so well with how to write personal narratives. One of the Writer's Workshop lessons is to think of a place that matters to them and the episodes that occurred in that place.
Quinlan's Spring Pond series all take place in a setting that is so important to her, and all the events center around Herman the Turtle.
Spring is in the air!
The children were fascinated with how Ms. Quinlan went through the whole writing process: Many of our students are very interested in becoming published writers, so Ms. Quinlan gave them the hope and encouragement they need. I would highly recommend Pamela Quinlan as a speaker. Her books are very entertaining, and the photographs were taken at Durward's Glen.
Kids connect with her animal characters and each book has an important theme. What the Waubesa Intermediate School kids said: Emma, 5th grade--"It was exciting to hear Pamela talk about how she became a writer. I can't believe she has written so many books. Her powerpoint was very interesting.
Many people would ask if the turtle was still in the pond; she would respond that she believes the turtle is still at the pond.
