Renas Experiment
All this superstition had mostly died with the old people, whose gravestones in the Oakfield cemetery were sunken deep in the ground and so covered with mold and moss that it was impossible to read the date of their birth or death. A few old-time customs, however, still clung to the young people, because of the romance attaching to them, rather than from any real faith in their efficacy. One of these had to do with the well in the pine-grove and the tragedy connected with it, the story of which I heard on the summer afternoon when I alighted at the little country station of Oakfield, dusty and tired, and wondering how I was to get to the place of my destination.
I was a stenographer and bookkeeper in a large city firm, and was overworked in body and brain. Sleep and appetite had both forsaken me, and I was sinking into a state of semi-invalidism, with little strength and less ambition. Rest I must have and a change of air, and when I saw an advertisement saying that Mrs. Eli Parks, who lived near the seacoast and two miles from town, wanted summer boarders, and that her rooms were large and cool and quiet, and her house a hundred years old, I said: I can rest there.

This book is not yet featured on Listopia. This story centers around Rena Burdick and an odd will that will provide her with money if she marries Rex Travers, a man she does not know.
The storyline has great potential, think Our Mutual Friend, but fails to develop into anything interesting. The presence of Rex seems wholly unnecessary as Rena is engaged to Tom Giles midway through the book. It seems as if Holmes' began a storyline and then just abandoned it.
Even though the structure of the novel is sound and the characters fairly well w This story centers around Rena Burdick and an odd will that will provide her with money if she marries Rex Travers, a man she does not know. The scientists wanted to observe the effects of leaving the disease untreated, so they left these patients to suffer and, in many cases, die.
But some scientists recognised the need for guidelines. Governments introduced some limitations on experiments with humans and animals in the late s. But sadly some groups remain at high risk of being used as experimental subjects without their consent, especially prisoners, soldiers, individuals with mental illnesses and people in developing countries.
Cosmopoiesis the Renaissance Experiment
In the early s a new drug, thalidomide, was found to cause injuries to fetuses of mothers who had taken the medication. After this disaster, which was caused by inadequate experimentation, new regulations for rigorous testing were introduced. The practice of controlled trials, pioneered after the Second World War, was standardised and required for all new medicines. Add text to my collection. There are 26 related objects.
