Hopper to read that one to us. With the internet, I was finally able to find it for myself. My eleven year old daughter just loves poetry and you managed to hit on some of her favorites. This is an excellent list, Robert, thank you.
But no Shel Silverstein?? No list of kid poems is complete without at least one Shel! Oh, I forgot wonderful Jack Prelutsky! I love his books! The words and wonderful, hilarious illustrations!! My kids loved Sendak, and one of their favorites was Chicken Soup with Rice. This is a really nice post to put up, Robert. And, of course, the poetry books by Shel Silverstein.

Character Worksheets
I love reading poetry to my students and teaching them to write it. This year I had students who would try to find the poems they thought I would be embarrassed to read aloud. I am working on a website called Poems of Silliness that I am developing as a teaching tool. Sasha, if you only knew how much students love being scared.
I thought we were talking about younger kids judging by the rest of the titles. Shel Silverstein is the funniest, and this poem is hilarious! Today the teacher farted.

It was an awful smell. It was just like a rotting egg, Straight from the depths of hell! Haven't laughed that hard in a long time. Was researching poems about families for children to teach this term when I somehow came across this poem.

Thank you so much! I made myself a snowball As perfect as could be. I thought I'd keep it as a pet And let it sleep with me. I love the humor, innocence and whimsy of this poem. But there's more here than meets the eye. If you look a bit deeper, you can see how we sometimes don't properly interpret our experiences, Granddad's got hair on his fingers, Hair on his toes, Hair in his ears, Hair up his nose.
I own a big fat cat- The fattest for miles around. Wherever there's lots of food, That's where he'll be found. The mountain and the squirrel Had a quarrel, And the former called the latter "Little prig. I do not remember how I came across this poem, but ever since I knew it, it has been my favorite. A little squirrel standing up for itself against the mighty mountain and putting it in place This poem has reminded me about the wolf in sheep's skin. It's a great way to teach our children to think about the intentions of others even though they can be nice.
The other night 'bout two o'clock, or maybe it was three, An elephant with shining tusks came chasing after me. His trunk was wavin' in the air an' spoutin' jets of steam An' he was out to eat me up, but still I didn't scream.
This is truly a great poem describing the vivid imagination of children, and it does seem that children have an even deeper imagination when it comes to bedtime! I think this is a great poem These are my two drops of rain Waiting on the window-pane.
