Shambhavi Mudra (Teachings)

Would you like to tell us about a lower price? The dynamics of the shambhavi mudra are a classic signature of our lineage — profoundly intense gravity and grounding, and profoundly ecstatic consciousness. Both Bhagawan Muktananda and Bhagawan Nityananda manifested this asana as their basic state. In just coming and being around them, you would enter into this incredible field of consciousness and energy, and it would just saturate you. The longer you sat still in this way of being, the more conscious, the more awake you became. Yes, this mudra — this way of being that both Bhagawan Muktananda and Bhagawan Nityananda manifested, where he simultaneously experienced this incredible descending force of consciousness that saturates all four bodies in all the subtle layers of being, and at the same time is ecstatically present in the formless aspect of pure connsciousness, of pure light — is called shambhavi mudra.

It is so defined as a way to effortlessly sit in total consciousness. The consciousness does all the work. Mark Griffin is such an individual and offers a center for engagement in spiritual training, known as the Hard Light Center of Awakening. In the context of weekly meetings and monthly retreats, he gives discourses on the nature of enlightenment, the path to realization and the reality of truth. These talks have been carefully transcribed and lightly edited, and are presented in the Teachings series. For more information, please visit www.

Griffin, who teaches in Malibu, CA, exists in states of Nirvikalpa Samadhi and identifies meditation as the core of his teaching. He presents ancient knowledge of the various strands of Yoga dating back to the Vedas in contemporary terms, both mystical and scientific.

As such, his work complements and agrees with many esoteric practices including Taoism, Tantra, Yoga, Shamanism and theoretical physics. Mark Griffin is a Westerner who was born in the '50s in the Pacific Northwest. His childhood encompassed a usual American middle-class scenario, followed by tumultuous teen and early adult years spent in a very aggressive pursuit of higher knowledge and purpose.

Mark's studies in art and music brought him to the San Francisco Bay area where he met his Guru, Swami Muktananda, in After six years of full-time immersion in the study of meditation, Mark encountered a milestone of extreme spiritual significance-entrance into an advanced state of consciousness known as Nirvakalpa Samadhi.

Very shortly thereafter, Muktananda died. Great teachers of the Kagyu tradition came to Mark's assistance, and he received continued instruction in maturing and stabilizing his abilities in meditation from Kalu Rinpoche and Chogyam Trungpa. My practise has been the most life changing experience ever and I am always a disciple to Our Beloved Sadhguru. May Lord Shiva bless you sister. As I am sure you know, approaching the practice with intensity, heart and soul, is such a huge factor in making it successful for you.

When do you do your Kriya? Doing it too close to bed time can make it difficult to fall asleep. That will come by itself, and over time. For me, I only felt the power of the kriya long after 40 days, and once I was into my regular daily practices. Perhaps about 6 months of continuous practice later?

Mahamudra - Wikipedia

After I reached that point, then every time I practiced felt electric. The changes will come anyway. Thank you so much for your response. I recently completed suriya kriya and bhuta shuddi and combining it together with shambhavi is magical! Sleep is back to usual with really high energies just after finishing the both kriyas… I will update here but it is indeed a great journey.. Hi there, thank you for sharing! In your opinion, do I really have to restart if I have a break of couple of sessions during the 40 day period?

I feel anxiety about this issue. What would you say — Is it better to do 40 days with couple of unavoidable breaks or not do at all? To share with you my personal experience, when I have missed a practice in the past, I have always restarted my 40 days of practice. The intensity of the 40 days is built up through not missing any of the two daily practices.

If you miss a practice, or even a day, just keep going the next day. You may have to start your 40 day count from the beginning, but the benefit of doing this sadhana at all, even if you miss a couple days or practices here and there, will still be far greater than not doing it at all. The next day I will begin again at day 1 of 40 days. But the 15 days I have already completed are still benefiting me. I sleep better and less. I no longer get angry at my always angry wife: And I have dropped the cancer sticks for good.

And just like when I was in college, my friends picked my habits and I picked theirs. So the addiction have spread to few of my friends as well. The only downside is the money you spend on learning the practice or in other words taking IE class. Today is my 4th day of the 40th day cycle, and I already love and look forward to my kriya. That was such a soulful read especially when you are treading on the same path and feels relieved to see a signboard as an assurance that the path is worth walking.

Introducing myself to the practice as i trace back to the events seems like a divine plan. It was in no time i realized am at his presence among other Spiritual aspirants and practicing the kriya initiated by him. Hello Malavika, I did my inner engineering in the year , I was practicing Shambhavi for Six years, no doubt those were the carefree six years, I meant the care is free for everything I see, touch, feel and smell my love towards the world was outbusting.

I was not able the truth is I had taken it for granted, which I feel bad now continue the practices due to various reasons, post reading your note here, it brought back my inspiration that I drew on my first Mandala 40 days of practice. Morning tomorrow is my first day post initiation… my forty days starts tomorrow. I am so happy to read this message and to hear that you have decided to breathe new life into your practice.

I have no doubt how well it will go for you, especially since you have already tasted the ecstacy of it once before. Did you learn Upa Yoga when you did your seminar? They told us ideally we should do Upa yoga first and then Shambhavi. It takes me 1 hour twice a day for Upa Yoga and Shambhavi. I love it in the morning but it is harder when I get home from work. I will also take the Surya Kriya seminar so I will have to figure out how to add that as well.

I only wish I had the time. I did learn Upa yoga at the seminar, though I had already been doing these practices after learning them from youtube videos available for free on the Isha website. I am sorry for the late response. Maybe by this point you would have completed your 40 days! How do you feel? I understand what you are saying about creating time for all these practices.

If I was staying at an ashram, maybe then I could do practice and practice, kriya after kriya.

In this issue, I feel that the point is quality not quantity — it is about bringing a certain quality to your life. That quality can come from doing 4 types of kriya a day, or doing 2, or 1, or for some, maybe none. If I was in your position, I would probably continue doing shambhavi daily once a day After my 40 days , and once I had been initiated into Surya Kriya, to begin adding SK to my practices twice a day for 40 days.

After that, I would pay attention to my state of being and practice as required a minimum of once a day. I really like this post.

Hi, Can you person with back pain due to bulging disc attend the inner engineering 4 day course? Hi Malavika, In the photo where you are sitting under the tree, your hand posture especially fingers is not correct. Please talk to your teacher or a trained person who can give you corrections.

You may want to fix that photo with the correct posture. Or May be check out some of the Isha photos. You might be able to spot the mistake. I was not assuming any particular posture, meditation or involved in kriya at the time this photo was taken. I was simply sitting for the photo. The inner engineering courses offered are really far away from my place. Can you teach me about the Shambhavi MahaMudra Kriya through a video or tell me the guidelines to practice it so that I can do it at home.

I have been doing Isha Kriya for 24 days now and it is really helpful, I would now like to move onto Shambhavi Kriya along with Isha Kriya. Shreyjit, I completely understand your deep desire to take your practice to the next level. I feel the same way too. I however, cannot initiate you into this kriya, and nor can anyone who has not completed their training. When I lived in Ireland, there were no Isha events in the country and I felt so disappointed in that.

I was ready to take the next step, but was unable to. I just kept practicing with whatever small tools I had, and then all of a sudden, Isha began offering Surya Kriya in Dublin for the first time ever. It was a miracle for me and I was so thrilled. I would recommend to keep up your isha kriya practices — that is a very powerful process in itself, and keep your eyes open for opportunities to learn more. Hi MKK, I am not completely sure what you mean by your first question about life being on fast forward. When you think your life is on fast forward — just keep practicing! Which 2 minute course are you speaking of?

If you are talking about Isha Kriya, this practice takes longer than 2 minutes to experience. I was initiated in Shambhavi Mahamudra last 17th December. Even on the initiation day and today I am just doing it as any other thing I do. I am so glad I read you tonight. I am On my 3rd day of mandala and I was wondering what am I to expect out of this kriya.

Your documented journey has not given me a sketch of my journey but to accept whatever comes my way. How I wish everyone tried inner Engineering once in their lifetime. Hello Malavika Thank you for sharing I completed 4 day Inner Engineering, however, I feel like I am not doing my 40 days practice properly because I cannot remember the chanting part. We were not allowed to take any notes. Do you thing it is extremely important to remember the chanting? Please advise Thank you. I have a question.

You ask a good question that I am sure many wonder about. To be honest with you, I do not know how to focus on my inner self or on divine light, or even nothingness. To me, they all feel similar. When I practice my kriya I try not to imagine anything at all. I keep focusing on my breath.

Hi Malavika, Beautiful testimonial. I actually stumbled across your site while googling to find out if there was a guided mp3 audio to help me time and keep track of all the components of the Sambhavi. I finished my inner engineering last weekend. Did anyone experience this? The headache is so persistent and lasts through out the day.

As much as I want to practice it I am worried about these headaches. I started doing shambhavi mahamudra, but in the process i tend to sleep sometime and realise it within few minutes. Can you help in this? Thanks much for this nice post. I would like to ask one question from this post. What does the 2 min preparation mean? Can you explain that please? This is spending 2 minutes before you begin Shambhavi, thinking about what you learned from IE, reminding yourself why you are practicing this Kriya. Hello Malvika Thanks for sharing yours experience.

It is really wonderful. I did my Inner Engineering course in March, I practiced days. Then it was discontinued. Few days back I again started the practice but once a day i. I missed the shambavi Mahamudra thrice in last 33 days. I always feel bad ,whenever i miss. Yours article is very encouraging. From yours deep experience, I want to know the: In this case upyoge to be done before the dinner time. What type of experience one can feel. I am asking this to understand the practice is going in right direction or something wrong. As I am doing once in a day. Is it compulsory to do twice for 40 days.

When I attended IE, we practiced upa yoga right before beginning Shambhavi so it seems no gap is required. There needs to be a 4 hour gap between your last meal and Shambhavi. I practice before dinner for this reason. I believe everyone has their own personal experience with how Shambhavi affects them.

I have shared how it feels for me here. All I can recommend is that if you have any doubts, try to get in touch with the Isha instructor who initiated you into Shambhavi and ask them! Once a day for 6 months or twice a day for 40 days. I will appreciate yours blog clarify many doubts. Thanks for sharing it Malavika. I have been planning to attend IE programme but was little specktical about it.

Reading ur experience, I feel like keeping my doubts aside and go for it. One thing if I may ask you….. I have been doing Isha kriya by Sadhguru…. Is shambhavi and Isha kriya same practice as they both guide you to concentrate on agya chakra. Hello Richa, Isha Kriya and Shambhavi are different practices. Now after breakthrough i attended inner engineering this september and have been into practice of shambavi yet to make it 40days.. Did you follow the kiyas? Thanks Malavika for sharing your experiences of Shambhavi Kriya.

It is inspiring and very encouraging. I am regular practitioner of Surya Kriya which I have started on 2-Mar and continuing everyday without a break. I have recently went to Isha Yoga Center in Coimbatore to do Inner Engineering program and currently practicing the mandala of 40 days which I am going to complete in another 2 weeks. Since day one of my Shambhavi practice, I have been experiencing calmness of my mind, tranquility, ability to respond to things fast and better, spontaneity, sleep quality, ability to read lengthy paragraphs or blogs with much intensity and involvement, love the people around and lot more.

The only guilt I had was, I had to reduce my Surya kriya cycles from three to one because of lack of time as I have added Upa yoga, Yoga Namaskar and Shambhavi to my daily routine. I believe, I shall be able to get back to practicing 3 cycles of Surya kriya once I complete my Mandala on Shambhavi. For my life time, I keep practicing both of these kriyas. They are the tools for transformation and joy.

All the best to my brothers and sisters who picked-up Isha practices. Never had a chance of attending inner engineering but I will do one day. But I practice yoga and meditation regularly. Also regularly read about sadhguru. First time reading your blog… I recently attended the 2-day kriya initiation and am now on day 4 of my independent practice. I too have noticed some of the same things you did and know I need to continue practicing to feel the rain inside me, as you have mentioned.

Thank you for posting and I hope your experience continues to grow in a positive way. I have never been to India before. How can I go to Combaitore Isha yoga centre from Canada? When I was practicing while pregnant I contacted my Isha teacher and received the following guidance: Otherwise, I had no other problems completing the kriya during pregnancy.
