You do not need to join a tour in Istanbul to go to Cappadocia. We make a reservation at the Kelebek Hotel in Goreme. We buy a cheap domestic airplane ticket and manage our flight by ourselves. We do use a guide in Cappadocia because, unlike Istanbul, sights are spread over many miles and transportation is an issue. You can rent a car and drive yourselves. My husband rejects this idea because he wants to look out the window not watch the road.

We always get a private car and driver and then hire a private guide. As I have serious mobility issues I need someone with extensive knowledge of the area to help me get as close to the attractions as possible. If you elect not to rent a car you would probably be fine on a tour bus with a small group. You can spend at least hours in the Open Air Museum in Goreme. We just take a taxi to visit this place. I put myself in the capable hands of Heritage Travel located in the Kelebek Hotel. They arrange for my guides and transportation.
I have also used them to purchase airline tickets from Istanbul to Cappadocia. If you opt for the sunrise balloon ride they can also arrange that for you. Butterfly Balloons is an excellent and reputable company.
I really believe you will enjoy your experience in Cappadocia. You are going to have six active and busy days, but they will leave you renewed in spirit and with many terrific memories.
